1 Teacher Training Guide Welcome to the Lexia classroom.
2 Welcome to the Lexia classroom. What is Lexia Reading? Lexia Reading is a technology-based system of differentiated practice, embedded assessment and targeted instruction, designed as an essential component of every reading curriculum. This scalable, research-proven approach provides educators norm-referenced measures that predict performance and prescribe instructional intensity to improve reading achievement. Lexia Reading Recommended Usage Students of all abilities can benefit from using Lexia Reading on a consistent basis. Lexia Reading can be used in a variety of ways: in the classroom during center activities, in the computer lab, in before/after school programs, and even at home. Implementing Lexia Reading successfully in your school or program can be done by following the best practices developed from Lexia s multiple, rigorous outcome studies. Lexia Reading is most effective when: The intensity of use matches the needs of the students. Teachers regularly monitor student progress and analyze data. Teachers plan for instruction based on need, and then reflect on student outcomes. 5% FEW 15% some tier THREE Accelerate reading acquisition by providing extended practice to develop foundational reading strategies 80% all Lexia s Three-Tier Model of Support or Instruction tier TWO tier ONE Prevent reading failure by strengthening reading skills for students who need additional practice in essential reading skills Support on- and advanced students through accelerated independent practice Lexia Reading aligns with the Three-Tier Response to Intervention (RTI) Model 2

4 Practice Lexia Early and Primary Reading Lexia Reading encourages early reading success through the development of critical pre-reading and reading skills. The interactive, engaging activities reinforce sound-symbol correspondence and help develop automatic word recognition and comprehension. Activities include the application of reading strategies to single word phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and brief stories. The activity formats also encourage listening skills and following directions. Fun, age-appropriate activities develop phonological principles and the alphabet both proven predictors of reading success, as well as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. An appealing, deliberately uncluttered interface focuses elementary grade students on the reading skill they are learning within Lexia Reading. Reading skills developed in Lexia Early Reading ONE TWO Phonological Awareness Rhyming, word segmenting and sound blending (activities do not require alphabetic knowledge). Alphabetic Knowledge Consonants, short vowels, and letter combinations with one sound. Beginning and ending sounds, including digraphs. Early Reading Level 2 Consonant Tree I reinforces knowledge of sound/ symbol correspondence for selected consonants. 5 Practice Lexia Strategies for Older Students The activities in Lexia Reading s Strategies for Older Students are specifically designed to help students in grades 12 with their reading skills. Students increase automatic word recognition by reinforcing phonic elements and sound/symbol relationships. Activities provide extensive practice in everything from basic phonological awareness to advanced word-attack strategies, as well as vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension. As students progress systematically through the program, they gain a sense of achievement, confidence, and independence. Lexia Reading s Strategies for Older Students accelerates reading development for at-risk readers in grades 12, and is appropriate for English language learners as well. Reading skills developed in Lexia Strategies for Older Students ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE Short Vowel, One Syllable Words Letter-sound correspondence, phonological awareness in the initial, medial, and final sounds, including digraphs; word, phrase and sentence comprehension. 8 Assessment mylexia Class Home Page Welcome to Assessment Without Testing Lexia s Assessment Without Testing technology is an embedded assessment system that provides educators with actionable, norm-referenced performance data without interrupting the flow of instruction to administer a test. Based on student s skill and rate of progress, Lexia Reading predicts each student s chance of reaching a grade- benchmark or target at the end of the school year. Using the powerful data on your Home Page, you can help close the reading gap for your students and improve their performance on grade- assessments. Log in to to monitor your students progress on your Home Page
9 Assessment Monitor Student Progress Class Plan Instruction Who is struggling and needs instruction? The Plan Instruction list displays all students in your class who are struggling with an activity and may require explicit teacher-directed instruction in order to progress. Students are grouped by the program and skill in which they are struggling to facilitate small-group instruction with Lexia Lessons. Performance Predictors or Lexia Skill Set How is my class doing right now? This pie chart displays either Performance Predictors (for Grades K 3) or Lexia Skill Set (for Grades and above). Performance Predictors (Grades K 3) indicate each student s percent chance of reaching the end-of-year benchmark for his or her grade. The student s skill and performance is compared to a normed sample to calculate this critical measure of risk of potential reading failure. On Target: Student has a % chance of reaching the end-of-year benchmark for his or her grade. (100% are students who have already reached benchmark.) Some Risk: Student has a 31-79% chance of reaching end-of-year benchmark. High Risk: Student has a 1-30% chance of reaching end-of-year benchmark. Note: Performance Predictors are updated monthly at the beginning of the calendar month and are available for students who have used Lexia Reading at least once in the previous month. Usage Are students using Lexia Reading at the recommended s? The usage graph displays average usage for all students in your class who have used Lexia Reading at least once in the past weeks. The blue-shaded area indicates 0 minutes or more of average weekly usage, which is the minimum recommended usage for Some Risk, High Risk, and Lexia Skill Set students. Table How is each student in my class doing right now? The color-coded icons allow you to prioritize instruction for struggling students based on a student s overall risk as well as accuracy in their current activity. Students with a red icon are at high risk for not reaching grade- benchmarks and should be prioritized for instruction. Pay attention to the + or - that displays under the On Target and Intermediate sections, which indicates change in percentage points of students identified as On Target or Intermediate from the previous month. Click to gauge class and individual student progress over time. Lexia Skill Set (Grades +) provides an estimate of the skill that the student is working on in Lexia Reading, based strictly on the student s current program. Skill Set Grade Level of Material Program Level Intermediate 3rd 6th SOS & 5 Elementary 2nd+ SOS Levels 2 & 3 Basic K 1st+ SOS Level 1 or lower The + sign indicates these s review basic skills while using more advanced content and vocabulary. Note: Lexia Skill Set is updated nightly and is available for students who have used Lexia Reading at least once in the past weeks. Click to see each student s average weekly and total minutes as well as the student s current program assignment. The Class Table provides a concise overview of your class by reporting each student s current status with the following information: An Instructional Priority icon displays for students who need instruction. Name: Click the student s name to view a Student Combined Report for a detailed look at the student s current and past performance. Grade: The student s current grade. The student s current Performance Predictor (%) or Lexia Skill Set status will display. Lexia Usage: The student s actual weekly usage (averaged over the past weeks) is compared to the target usage. The target usage is the prescribed intensity needed to increase the student s grade of material. The target number of minutes is recommended as a minimum, not a stopping point. The Add column displays the difference between the actual usage and the target usage. This column is sortable so you can easily see who needs more usage and how much. If the student needs instruction in one or more activities, a Lexia Lesson icon displays. Click this icon to view a PDF with a scripted lesson plan for teacher-led small group instruction. Skills (Completed): This graph displays the grade- of skills that the student has completed in Lexia Reading. If the student has completed a program in the past 3 weeks, this icon will display in the Certificates column. Click this icon to view the Achievement Certificate PDF, which is pre-populated with the student s name and ready to print. For more information about interpreting progress monitoring reports, see the Help Tools on 9
