1 SOAR Behavior Expectations Plan Carter Elementary has adopted the SOAR Behavior Expectations Plan to ensure a safe and productive learning environment for all students. This schoolwide behavior management plan has been developed to help students become responsible and mindful of exercising appropriate behaviors that are conducive to their learning environment on a daily basis. The SOAR Behavior Expectations Plan will provide optimal opportunities for each child to practice and model appropriate behaviors that are reflective of good character development. These expectations are outlined in the SOAR matrix below. 2 SOAR Behavior Expectations Self control Operate safely Act responsibly Respect yourself and others! Awesome Astronauts, Fantastic Falcons, and Outstanding Citizens We value responsibility and good citizenship at Carter, and strive to produce well-mannered and respectful young people. Students who consistently meet SOAR behavior expectations will have several opportunities to be recognized and earn their Wings each day. Specific details about rewards and Wings celebrations will be shared with you by your child s teacher. In addition, any student who accumulates ZERO (0) behavior points throughout the school year will be an Awesome Astronaut for that school year. Any student who accumulates less than 15 points throughout the school year, which means they have incurred no MAJOR infractions (per the principal), will be a Fantastic Falcon for that school year. In grades 1 through 5, any student who is named an Awesome Astronaut or a Fantastic Falcon for that school year will be eligible for the Outstanding Citizen Award for his or her class. Each teacher will choose one student from his or her class to receive the Outstanding Citizen award for that year. SOAR Behavior Expectations Monitoring Procedures The Sonny Carter SOAR Behavior Expectations Plan will be monitored and managed through a point system, which is detailed here. Research suggests that the most powerful intervention to improve student performance requires both positive and negative interventions. The point system will be used throughout the school, not only during classroom time, but in the lunchroom, restrooms, media center, computer class, music class, REACH, P.E. class, assemblies, before and after school, etc. The following is a list of behaviors that do not meet our SOAR Expectations and the points assigned for each infraction. The point system will start over at the beginning of each nine-week grading period. Students will start each grading period with zero (0) points. Please note that points for certain inappropriate behaviors are different for K-3 students and 4-5 students, due to developmental differences and expectations.

3 When a student does not meet SOAR Behavior Expectations and is assigned points, that student/teacher will complete a behavior notice (also signed by the staff member) to bring home. Parents should please sign and return these forms the following day to indicate that they have received notification of any infractions/misbehavior and points their child has accumulated. Students will be responsible for taking these notices home, having them signed, and returning them to their homeroom teacher. A copy of the notice will be kept on file with the homeroom teacher. Teachers will keep track of points in a discipline folder. All parents should carefully read and review with their child the Bibb County School District Code of Conduct. KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten students are learning to adjust to the school environment, learning that consequences exist for each action, and are better motivated by more immediate consequences; they will therefore abide by the following consequence plan. Kindergarten students will also receive immediate reinforcement when SOAR Behavior Expectations are not met with time-outs from class activities. Points Accumulated Consequences for Kindergarten students 9 points Note sent home and 30 minutes In-School Suspension 15 points Note sent home, Parent Contact, 1 hour In-School Suspension 24 points Note sent home, required Parent Conference, and ½ day In-School Suspension, Meeting with grade level 33 points Required Parent Conference and 1 day In-School Suspension, and suspension from all field trips, assemblies, programs, etc. for the remainder of the grading period 42 + points Consequences will be determined by the school administration. The principal and assistant principal have the authority to suspend a student from school, field trips, assemblies, programs, and social events, etc. without following the steps listed above based on the nature and severity of the student s behavior.

4 GRADES 1 5 Points will be accumulated during each nine-week grading period with the following consequences: Points Accumulated Consequences for students in Grades points Parent letter sent home and ½ day In-School Suspension 24 points Parent letter sent home, 1 day In-School Suspension 33 points Parent letter sent home, 1 day In-School Suspension and suspension from all field trips, assemblies, programs, dances, and school social events, etc. for the remainder of the grading period 42 points Parent letter sent home, 2 days In-School Suspension, Required Parent Conference in which a plan of action for the student will be developed through the cooperation of the teacher, counselor, and administration points Consequences will be determined by the school administration. The principal and assistant principal have the authority to suspend a student from school, field trips, assemblies, programs, and social events, etc. without following the steps listed above based on the nature and severity of the student s behavior. Students assigned to In-School Suspension will complete class assignments for the period that they are out of the classroom. The point system will apply to all students, grades 1-5. Students assigned to ISS during their lunch period will eat in ISS. Discipline consequences also apply to students who plan to go on the fifth grade trip. Any 5 th grade student who earns points in a grading period will be subject to disciplinary review with the teacher and administration, with the final decision to be made by the principal. Students who earn 42 or more points in any grading period prior to the trip may not be permitted to go on the Fifth grade trip. Fifth grade students will not be allowed to participate in school social functions and field trips if they have not met their academic requirements in a timely manner. This includes having any assignments missed due to illness that are not completed within five days. There will be a short grace period for students new to Carter Elementary at the beginning of the year, during which time the new students will become accustomed to the system and how it works. We will keep track of points in the classroom during the first week(s) so the students will be aware of how the system will be implemented; however, the point system will truly begin to count after 1 week for new second through fifth grade students, and after 2 weeks for Kindergartners and new first grade students. We trust that all of our students will be working as hard as they can and doing their best during these weeks, and that this grace period will be a constructive learning time. If an extreme situation arises during this grace period, it will be managed accordingly by the teacher and the administration.
