1 HEALTH I 9 th Grade April 2012

2 I. COURSE DESCRIPTION HEALTH I Health I is a single marking period course consisting of five basic units: Family Life Education, First Aid, Substance Abuse, Nutrition and Bullying/Organ and Tissue Donation. Each unit provides and equips students with valuable knowledge and skills necessary for life in today s society. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTLINE A. FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION The students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of Human Sexuality. ( B.1) 2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of and background of sexually transmitted diseases/infections and their methods of transmission. ( B.1) 3. Distinguish and identify the signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDS transmission. ( B.3) 4. Compare and contrast healthcare and personal hygiene products and services commonly used by adolescents and young adults. ( B.5) B. NUTRITION The students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a working comprehension of the nutritional aspects of human consumption. ( B.3) 2. Analyze and evaluate current dietary recommendations, resources, and trends from a variety of sources. ( B.2) 3. Design and develop a nutrition plan for a healthy young adult considering cost, availability, nutritional balance, freshness, nutritional value, and culture. ( B.2) 4. Recommend healthy ways to lose, gain, or maintain weight. ( B.1) 5. Analyze and evaluate how healthy and unhealthy eating patterns impact the functioning of the human body, including healthy bone development and immune system functioning. ( B.3) C. FIRST AID The students will be able to: 1. Recognize the relationship between the reasons for First Aid and the value of First Aid training. ( D.6) 2. Evaluate work and leisure situations for perceived and actual risk of intentional and unintentional injuries. ( D.1) 3. Develop personal protection strategies to reduce the incidence of injuries and evaluate their effectiveness. ( D.1)

3 4. Assess the short and long-term impacts of injuries on the individual, family members, the community, and the workplace. ( D.1) D. SUBSTANCE ABUSE The student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a working comprehension of the knowledge and background necessary for making intelligent decisions regarding the use and abuse of controlled substances. ( B.1, C.3) 2. Investigate tobacco use as a contributing or causative factor in the incidence of cancer, heart disease, strokes, emphysema and other lung diseases. ( B.1) 3. Demonstrate the impact of alcohol use and abuse on body systems and organs including the cardiovascular system, the liver, the reproductive system, and the immune system. ( B.3) 4. Assess and evaluate factors that influence the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. ( C.3) 5. Evaluate factors that support an individual to quit using substances. ( C.4) E. DECISION-MAKING, BULLYING/ORGAN & TISSUE DONATION, DATING VIOLENCE The student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a working comprehension of the knowledge and the understanding of the dangers of social networking, internet usage and peer relationships that could lead to sexual harassment or bullying implications. ( D.1) 2. Recognize the relationship between the benefits of organ and tissue donation and the value of this program to the health and well-being of society generally, and individually to the lives saved by this program. ( D.5),( D.1) 3. Predict the short and long-term consequences of good and poor decision-making on oneself, friends, family, and the community. ( B.1) 4. Demonstrate a clear understanding of dating violence and the characteristics of a healthy relationship. ( B.1) III. EVALUATION Students are evaluated using the following criteria: 1. Class Participation 2. Attendance 3. Periodic Tests and Quizzes 4. Homework 5. Projects 6. Class Assignments

4 IV. TEXTBOOKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS Health & Wellness Meeks, Heit, Page; Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, New York, New York V. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES Various teaching methods are used in this course. Instruction will be given using prepared worksheets, class notes, and exercises from the book. Group activities and cooperative learning may be used. Classroom demonstrations will be included. Board approved videos may be observed. Various topics may be covered by approved speakers. VI. KEY SCOPE AND SEQUENCE CHART I = INTRODUCED D = DEVELOPED IN DEPTH R = REINFORCED SKILL TO BE LEARNED 9 Gain an understanding of Human Sexuality Gain a working knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases Understand the methods of STD/STI transmission Gain knowledge to identify the signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDS and transmission of it Gain knowledge of the nutritional aspects of human consumption Understand the relationship between First Aid and the value of First Aid training Gain the knowledge and background to make intelligent decisions regarding the use and abuse of controlled substances. Gain an understanding of family life skills necessary for living a rewarding adult life Gain the knowledge to distinguish between inherited and acquired characteristics. Gain the knowledge of human reproduction Gain the knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth Gain the knowledge of contraceptives Gain the knowledge of health insurance, medical insurance, and different types of medical doctors. Gain an understanding of the food groups Gain the knowledge to make informed decisions concerning social networking, internet and peer relationships that have the potential for injury either intended or unintended. Understand the benefits of organ and tissue donation to the health and well-being of society generally, and the individuals whose lives are saved, so that students will be motivated to make an affirmative decision to register as a donor when they become adults.

5 VII. PACING CHART Unit 1 Lesson 1: Course Objectives Week 1 Lesson 1, Course Objectives, is the first lesson of Health 1 Provides students with an introduction Students are introduced to course objectives, grading policies, class rules and a reinforcement of school rules for this course. This lesson will likely require one to two class sessions planned for this unit. Unit 2: Decision making, Bullying, Organ and Tissue Donation & Dating Violence Week 1, 2 Decision-making, Bullying, Organ and Tissue donation and dating violence is the second of six units within the Health 1 course. Lesson 2: Decision-making provides students with the foundation to formulate decisions in their lives that will impact their future both individually and generally as a part of our society. Lesson 3: Bullying, students learn strategies for gathering information available through media and knowledgeable people to formulate decisions based on solid information. Lesson 4: Organ and Tissue donation, students will be given knowledge of the benefits to the recipients of the donation and society as a whole through this program. Lesson 5: The definition of dating violence will be covered as well as the warning signs of dating violence and the characteristics of healthy relationships. This lesson will likely require eight class sessions planned for this unit. Unit 3: Nutrition Week 3, 4 Basic Nutrition education is the third of six units within the Health 1 course. The four lessons that comprise Unit 3: Lesson 5: Nutrition and Diet, Lesson 6: Food labels, Lesson 7: Healthy Diets, weight control, Lesson 8: Eating disorders- help students understand the basic principles behind making healthy choices in their diets.

6 While completing these lessons, students are introduced to information to make decisions that impact their wellness with an ability to change behaviors for the future. Together, the lessons and activities in this unit will likely require seven class sessions to complete. Unit 4: First Aid, Lesson 10: Safety Week 5 Unit 4: First Aid and Safety is the fourth of the six units in this course Health 1. Provides the students of the importance of First Aid and the value of First Aid training, Students will be able to evaluate situations for perceived and actual risk of injuries. The two lessons that comprise Unit 4: Lesson 9: First Aid, First Aid training, and Lesson 10: Safety, evaluate risk, develop personal protection strategies to reduce injuries and make assessments of the impact of injuries personally and in our community. The lessons and activities in this unit will likely require five class sessions to complete. Unit 5: Substance Abuse Week 6, 7, 8 Unit 5: Substance Abuse is the fifth in six units of the course Health 1. The three lessons that comprise Unit 5, Lesson 11: Decisions on controlled substances, Tobacco use and associated diseases, Lesson 12: Alcohol use and abuse, Lesson 13: Drug use and abuse. Students are provided with information that will enable then to demonstrate a working comprehension of the knowledge and background necessary in making intelligent decisions regarding the use and abuse of controlled substances. Investigate substance abuse as a contributing and causative factor in the incidence of disease, mental and emotional well-being of the user and society today. Students will evaluate factors that support an individual to quit using substances and how to avoid these substances. Together, these lessons will likely require twelve class sessions planned for this unit.

7 Unit 6: Family Life Education Week 8, 9 Unit 6: Family Life Education is the sixth unit of six in the course Health 1. The lessons that comprise Unit 6: Lesson 14: Human Sexuality, Lesson 15: STI s/std s, Lesson 16: Contraceptives/Conception. Students will be able to identify the functioning of both male and female reproductive systems. Develop knowledge of the purpose of this system and how to care for it. Students will be able to define conception and explain how it takes place. Students will be able to list the stages of pregnancy. Students will discuss healthy behaviors in avoiding STI s/std s. Students should be knowledgeable of different methods of contraception, including abstinence, identify risks and consequences associated with sexual behavior. Together, these lessons will likely require eleven class sessions planned for this unit.

8 HEALTH 1 9 TH GRADE COURSE PROFICIENCIES I. COURSE OVERVIEW Health 1 consists of five basic units: Family Life Education, First Aid, Substance Abuse, Nutrition, Bullying/Organ and Tissue Donation. Each unit provides and equips students with valuable knowledge and skills necessary for life in today s society. Family Life education provides instruction in the biological functioning of the reproductive systems, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases/infections and AIDS. The First Aid units is designed to give students the knowledge and skill needed to handle everyday emergencies as well as serious injuries or sudden illness. The Substance Abuse unit familiarizes students with the effects and dangers of substance abuse as well as the symptoms of abuse, thus giving them the knowledge and background for intelligent decisions regarding use and/or abuse. The Nutrition unit examines the major concepts of nutrition, such as, nutrients and their functions, the four food groups, selection of a healthy diet and discussion of snacks, fast foods and special diets that are special interest to teenagers. The Bullying/Organ and Tissue donation unit is designed to give students the knowledge and the understanding of the dangers of social networking, internet usage and peer relationships and to the ramifications of these behaviors. II. PROFICIENCIES Upon successful completion of the requirements for this course the students will be able to: A. Demonstrate an understanding of Human Sexuality. B. Demonstrate working knowledge of and background of Sexually Transmitted Disease/Infections and their method of transmission. C. Distinguish and identify the signs and symptoms of AIDS and transmission. D. Demonstrate a working comprehension of the nutritional aspects of human consumption. E. Recognize the relationship between the reasons for First Aid and the value of First Aid training. F. Demonstrate a working comprehension of the knowledge and background necessary for making intelligent decisions regarding the use and abuse of controlled substances.

Demonstrate a working comprehension of the knowledge and the understanding of the dangers of social networking, internet usage and peer relationships that could lead to harassment or bullying implications. H. Recognize the relationship between the reasons for organ and tissue donation and the value of this program for the individual and the community.
