16 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, STATE DEPARTMENT OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL TRAINING, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, DR. DINAH MWINZI, CBS, ON THE OCCASION OF 7TH GRADUATION CEREMONY OF RIFT VALLEY TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE ELDORET, ON 10TH NOVEMBER, 2017 Dr. Dinah Mwinzi It gives me great pleasure to join the entire Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) fraternity in congratulating the graduating class of Your success and achievements are as a result of support from the Ministry of Education, The industry, The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), The County Government of Uasin Gishu, parents, siblings, spouses, friends, staff, fellow classmates and indeed many other well-wishers and stakeholders. Please join me in thanking all these who made sacrifices towards your success. Thank you all and know that your support has made tremendous impact to Kenya s economy. I wish, at this early opportunity to reiterate our Governments commitment to education and especially Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) stating that its support will remain unwavering. The role played by TVET, in imparting skills to our young people and contributing to the growth of our country cannot be overemphasized. Since its establishment, the TVET sector has consistently endeavored to meet the ever-changing industry dynamics, training young Kenyans and equipping them with technical and entrepreneurial skills necessary for our national development. The Jubilee Government recognizes the importance the TVET sector plays in the economy and its potential in meeting the national goals of education and most of all, in achieving Vision 2030 development aspirations. Ladies and gentlemen, as we celebrate the achievements of our youth today, my call to them has always been that there are numerous opportunities out there, and there are infinite possibilities of what you could do with your kind of training, talent, diligence, passion and character. It is said that while chance and opportunity happens to all of us, it only favours a prepared mind. You are going out at a very promising time. You must be part of the equation and take your rightful place in contributing to our national aspirations. I strongly encourage you to positively influence the people and resources around you. Capture the influence of a young mind and model it to innovate. Make sure you are of a remarkable impact to your community and above all inspire those that come after you. The Government has heavily invested in TVET. Billions of tax payers money has been invested in massive projects and equipment in each of the 290 constituencies. I expect that these investments should not lie idle or worse go to waste. It must improve the quality of our TVET graduates and ultimately the quality of the lives of our people. Ladies and gentlemen, as we celebrate this 7th graduation, I would like to single out the institution s transformation in the last several years. The Principal and the entire management of RVTTI have been exemplary. I applaud your contributions to nation building. Courtesy of your efforts, TVET has had a global influence. Just last month, I was privileged to preside over the official opening of a training of Green Champions for the East, West and Southern Africa. It was ably hosted by RVTTI and I am sure this is part of the innovations we keep talking about in TVET. Many have been talking about TVET being dynamic but never taking bold steps to actually modernise it. RVTTI has led by example and this is very pleasing. It makes me even happier to note that these efforts have had a direct impact on our graduates. The State Department of Vocational and Technical Training, fully appreciates the selfless and transformational leadership from all stakeholders not only in RVTTI but across the country. I commend all TVET trainers for the splendid work you are doing. All resources - financial, human and physical must be well harnessed for maximum benefits. This is the best way to re-engineer TVET for leadership and sustainable development. Education is key to personal, national and global development. The government will keep redesigning educational processes to achieve improvements in productivity. Delivering productivity and value is an undertaking of Government. This, we have and will continue doing. Appropriate policy and legal reforms are already in place. I will keep encouraging the public private partnerships as an impetus for growth and development in TVET. As I conclude, I remind the graduates that a graduation ceremony is a most memorable event in one s life. It is the beginning of the realization of ones purpose in life. During your time at RVTTI, you have gained the training that will enable you achieve a glorious purpose that I strongly believe God set you up for. You have also learned the principles of integrity, innovation, patriotism. I urge you to always seek wisdom from God as you make these principles a part of your daily lives. I wish you every success in your future endeavors. Work diligently to make Kenya a developed country not just in your lifetime, but also due to your contributions as a skilled workforce. Thank you and God bless you. 14

17 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS, DR KENNEDY KOECH Dr. Kennedy Koech It is my great pleasure and indeed a high honor to be here today to welcome you to our 7th graduation ceremony. This special occasion marks a significant milestone in our academic calendar, and with a lot of humility I wish to thank our almighty God for making it possible for us to continue to partake of this event. Today we gladly present to this great country highly trained men and women who have demonstrated through hard work, dependability, perseverance and dedication that they are ready to render service locally and internationally It is our conviction that these graduands who we honor today are well equipped to impact their world in many varied ways in applying their skills to transform Kenya and the world at large. Today s graduation is not just another joyous occasion, but also marks an important milestone in the history of RVTTI. The past six years have been marked with a lot of growth and development. We salute our institution for attaining the coveted ISO 9001:2015 certification. We continue to strategically position ourselves as a competitive, high quality and a brand TVET institution that is producing highly skilled manpower into the labor market. We still celebrate our status as Center of Excellence in TVET in the East African Community. We now celebrate yet another accolade of recognition as a UNEVOC Network member for the East and Central Africa charter. Last month we successfully hosted the International Greening TVET Workshop. This clearly reflects the commitment and dedication that students, staff and management have towards upholding the institute s mission. In this regard, I would like to sincerely thank the Principal for his visionary leadership and stewardship of the institution. I wish to congratulate the graduands of today and wish them the very best as they venture into the world of work. I commend you for surviving the rigor of our academic discipline. It is important that you believe in yourself and your abilities. Continue improving your skills in order to remain relevant in a dynamic and fast changing world. There are numerous opportunities out there and there are infinite possibilities of what you could do with your kind of training, talent, diligence, passion and character. DR KENNEDY KOECH Chairman, BOG, RVTTI 15

18 Remarks from the Principal Dr. Edwin Tarno It is with great pleasure that I once again welcome you to RVTTI, and to this great celebration of success, the 7th graduation ceremony. You are all most welcome. A graduation ceremony is a special occasion; a time of celebration, of contemplating a new chapter and opening a door onto the world of work and all the joys and responsibilities that go with it. Over the last year, the institution has not only continued to grow in size but also in reputation. Today a total of 837 students are graduating with diplomas in several technical engineering, sciences and business courses, two of which are with Higher National Diplomas. In addition, 286 and 174 students are graduating with craft and artisan certificates respectively. Among the artisan cohort is a special group who have been exclusively trained by RVTTI the NTSA driving instructors based on the new drivers curriculum. Our graduation data also indicate that we are making great strides in our efforts to train and educate more female students and make RVTTI a truly equal opportunities institution in line with the National objectives of empowering the women. Further, the number of students seeking enrollment in our institution grows higher every year. While there are significant challenges in managing the increasing numbers of students, the bigger number of graduands is a testimony to the role RVTTI plays in meeting the vast demand for technical training in the country and in helping to build a critical mass in human resource to meet the national development. I am pleased to report that the RVTTI continues to make significant progress and is reforming and transforming itself with vision, passion and energy into an even higher quality, more relevant and sustainable institution. In the year, RVTTI has become the first learning institution to be awarded the ISO 2008:2015 certification. Also, RVTTI was privileged to be awarded sponsorship by UNEVOC to run a workshop for greening champions in TVET in Africa. The workshop was very successful and benefited and attended by among other African countries - Nigeria, Ghana, and Botswana. Creating and maintaining foundations of excellence in clean and green environment is a value that we cherish with a lot of pride. This theme was further promoted in the well-attended and successful 6th RVTTI International Conference on Sustainable Development that for the first time ran a competition on the best research paper presentation in Greening TVET. Further, in our quest to nurture research and innovation in our students, the conference also featured a competition for the best innovation by students learning in TVET institutions within the East African Community. Also, in addition to our continued yearly publication of Africa Journal of TVET (AfriTVET Journal) in both print and online versions, RVTTI became the first TVET institution to publish and launch a book authored by Dr Edwin Tarno with Prof. J Simiyu, Dr K Kitainge and A Rono entitled: Emerging Trends and Challenges in TVET in Sub-Saharan Africa, a book that has gained a lot of interest across Africa. This comprehensive reference resource mainly speaks to policy makers, management, educators and researchers in optimizing management and quality professional leadership in TVET institutions. The story of RVTTI success is a story of God s favor, and I am confident that the God who has continuously blessed the works of our hands and has brought us this far will always guide us into all wisdom, good work and success. I want to pay a very special tribute to all our staff teaching and support staff. You who don t do your jobs for the money; we do it because it gives meaning to our lives - helping train and mould successive generations of young people from all over the Eastern Africa Region, and having been entrusted with their future is a privilege. I appreciate in equal measure our students who make RVTTI what it is and always carry our brand banner high. Well done for yet another successful year, we owe to God and to you all. My very special appreciation also goes to our Board of Management without whose governance role, which they take so seriously, and without whose valuable contributions, we definitely would not have achieved this much. I am grateful also to all our partners and collaborators for their support in training and attaching our students, and to our suppliers for providing prompt quality products and services. More gratitude goes to parents, guardians, and families of our graduands for their unfailing support and hard work. Your support - moral, emotional and financial there is no better investment than giving your children the knowledge, skills and confidence to know that they are equipped to achieve anything in life as long as they choose that path. You have every right to be very proud and very happy. To our graduands, gaining a good diploma requires not only ability and talent, but hard work, commitment and dedication. We are very proud of your successes. We are also proud that, like previous cohorts of RVTTI graduates, you will be going out across the world, taking with you the particular values of the brand RVTTI and, we hope you will be applying them both inside and outside your work practice. However, we note that we are sending you out at a time when the world is abounding in progress but also embroiled in unprecedented conflicts. I challenge you to embrace challenges and get ahead of the changes that come with them. Find your purpose and take your share in shaping your new world because you are equipped to find your niche and make your contribution. Become creators of the future and make the world a better place for all. To our Chief Guest, Your honour, thank you for your presence here today to recognize and honour our students on their achievements. And thank you for allowing us to always count on your support and presence in our functions. Thank you and God bless you all Dr. Edwin Tarno, HSC PRINCIPAL RVTTI 16
