2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings St Kevin's Catholic Primary School offers a quality curriculum in all key learning areas, including the Australian Curriculum areas of Mathematics, Science, English and History. Comprehensive programmes in Health and Physical Education, Integrated Technologies, LOTE and the Arts are also provided. Religious Education is an important and integral part of our curriculum and school. In years six and seven the teaching and learning programme is based on the philosophy of middle schooling. Students in these classes are involved in a variety of experiences promoting independent learning and leadership. Students in the Early Years are exposed to a comprehensive curriculum with an emphasis on inquiry and and discovery. They are assisted in their learning through a very successful 'buddy' programme with older students interacting with them in a variety of academic and social learning opportunities. All students from Prep to Year Seven have access to Specialist Teachers in the areas of Physical Education, Music and Visual Arts. Students in the early years also have specialist classes in Dance and Drama. The LOTE programme (Japanese) is accessed by all students in years three to seven. A comprehensive Learning Support programme provides for the individual needs of all students at St Kevin's. Students at all levels are encouraged to participate fully in Physical Education lessons and opportunities to be involved in school based and inter school competitions. Training and fitness activities are provided to students in preparation for Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics competitions. Students wishing to trial for other sporting teams are also giving this opportunity. Extra curricula activities St Kevin's offers a range of extra curricular activities which include a vibrant and expanding band and instrumental program. The band and instrumental group has approximately 5 children participating in the program from Years 4 to 7. Traditionally the school enjoys great success at the annual Catholic Schools Music Festival. A school choir has been established for children from Years 3 to 7. The choir sings regularly at Sunday mass,sacramental celebrations and school events. This year students are able to access Speech and Drama, Keyboard and Guitar lessons, Tennis Coaching and Zumba classes on school premises with private tutors. The Saint Kevin's school community has a strong commitment to environmental stainability. A student task force has been formed and is open to students from years 4 up. This group, the "Saint Kevin's Crusaders' is involved in community education and coordination of various projects aimed at recycling,reducing,refusing and reusing. Keeping hens for eggs and growing vegetables are two current projects in process. Several lunchtime clubs have been organised offering different recess options during the year. Students will have opportunity to participate in a number of activities including; chess, construction (Lego), knitting, craft and organised games. 2

3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning Saint Kevin's students are able to access computers and online activities both in their classrooms and in a dedicated computer room. A number of mobile laptop trolleys and wireless connectivity throughout the school enable classes to access desktops and lap tops in a variety of ways to enhance their research and opportunities for quality learning and production. Photography and video equipment is available for use by all students. A staged project to provide interactive white boards is in process and data projectors are available at a number of locations. The multi media facilities installed in the school hall provide opportunities to use technology to present quality products, facilitate learning and enhance performances and presentations. Social climate In, incorporating the philosophy of middle schooling, our senior students continued to be involved in shared leadership and decision making processes. The Better Buddies Program is used to assist our young leaders in their role. Senior students are also given opportunities to engage in four important ministries during the year; running a lunchtime canteen, providing a connection between class activities and the general community, participating in the student council and actively supporting special events. Students across the school participate in a range of activities supporting charitable organisations, including Project Compassion, St Vincent de Paul Christmas and Winter appeals, Catholic Mission and other identified local and wider community areas of need. In they were also given the opportunity to work with an Art Specialist and parent supporters to produce a variety of art projects that are now a part of the school's physical environment. Parents volunteered in classrooms, in the tuck shop and with working bee projects which were well attended with staff, parents and students one Saturday per term. Through a supportive P and F, fund raising projects were successful in providing additional resources and amenities. Social events are also organised each term for families to enjoy together. Parents assisted the St Kevin's Crusaders with their various environmental projects. Students joined a Rosary Bead making club and made hundreds of rosary beads that were donated overseas. Parents and staff supported this group once a week during play break. Clearly the community works together in a variety of ways to enhance their own relationships and experiences, reaching out to families with assistance when needed. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school Each year the school makes available to teachers, parents and students the opportunity to comment on their perceptions of the school in terms of school priorities and goals and achievements in key areas. In parents and staff were given the opportunity to provide feedback on school priorities, including Teaching and Learning, Faith Formation, Partnerships, and the Physical Environment. The data collated was very supportive of the school with almost all responses indicating agreement or strong agreement with the statements provided for comment. Along with other sources of information available, this data supports the fact that there is a high level of support for and satisfaction with the school. Information obtained in this way continues to be used to inform the school's annual action plan. Staff also have the opportunity to participate in annual individual goal setting processes and reviews with members of the Administration team. This is also an opportunity to express their views on the school, in particular in regard to teaching and learning. Senior students have the opportunity to participate in the Student Council and have their views heard. 3

4 Involving parents in their child s education St Kevin's School strives to build a supportive community of staff, parents and children. The parents of the school are involved in volunteering time in the classrooms for Literacy Blocks, Support-a-Reader, Art activities and Physical Education. Special days such as Grandparent's Day and Celebrations of Learning allow parents to participate in the learning experiences of their children. Periodically parents are invited to attend workshops and information sessions on specific focus areas, including literacy and vision screening There is a Class Parent program providing assistance to teachers and students with class events and support to families where needed. Parents are also involved in fund-raising, attend working bees and also Parents and Friends Association meetings. The association plays an active role in providing additional resources for teaching and learning, particularly for the library and other specialist areas. Parents are provided with information throughout the year on a variety of teaching and learning issues along with school policies and plans. Parents are kept informed and their opinions sought regarding the school's current goals and directions. Key areas of professional engagement in included opportunities for staff to work with the proposed Australian Curriculum, peer planning sessions, relevant professional learning to assist understandings of specific learning disabilities and issues, teaching and learning using online resources and technologies and developing consistency of teacher judgements when assessing and reporting. Staff also had opportunities to access relevant professional development opportunities in the areas of gifted and talented, school leadership and teaching in the early years. 4
