Campaign on the Environment By Children s Museum for Peace & Human Rights (CMPHR)

About the CMPHR: The Human Rights Education Programme (HREP) was launched in The enthusiasm and interest from schools and children in HREP s work was clear from the start. Therefore, in 2001, it was decided that a museum would be built which would be the first proactive children s institution in Pakistan for social, cultural, and educational activities that focuses on social issues. Teachers would be able to take children on field trips to the museum to attend workshops, visit interactive galleries and engage in a dialogue about social issues in an interesting and relevant way. The CMPHR is to be a 100,000 square foot, custom-built facility designed by ARCOP, to be built on 1.5 acres of land within the old Race Course Ground in Karachi. Whilst the museum is under construction, HREP carries on its work with schools under the name of the Children s Museum for Peace and Human Rights (CMPHR). The CMPHR currently works with children from over 200 schools across Pakistan. CMPHR s Activism & Outreach In order to develop an understanding of human rights and citizenship in children, it is essential to provide schools with socially relevant material. Unfortunately, material of this sort is currently unavailable in the curriculum of most schools in Pakistan. In order to enhance students understanding of various social issues, CMPHR provides schools with: Campaign material in the form of lesson plans for teachers to conduct in their classrooms (e.g. campaign on the rights of people with disabilities, say NO to violence campaign) Events and workshops on various themes (e.g. The Billboard Menace Reclaiming Our Cities from the Billboard Jungle). These are held outside of school for children and teachers to attend. These workshops involve speakers, question and answer sessions, training on how to lobby and field trips. They help to train a new generation of children in social activism. A youth network (Right-On Network) for children below the age of 17. Once children become Right On members, they can get involved in activism on a deeper level on issues that they feel passionate about. If a school contains more than 25 members, they can form a club. One annual Right-On conference as well as several meetings are held during the year for members to have the opportunity to get together with other Right-On members from all the schools in Karachi and discuss activities that they have carried out.

I Have a Dream of a Clean, Green World Campaign Overview Background: The crux of CMPHR s work is to provide socially relevant education. As the effects of global warming and climate change take hold, as well as with the resulting rise in the environment movement taken on by millions around the world, CMPHR believes that educating Pakistan s children about the severity of the looming climate crisis is an urgent and significant matter. Thus, CMPHR s current campaign I Have a Dream was launched in August 2009 with the first component focusing on the issue of our environment and the safety of life on this planet: I Have a Dream of a Clean, Green World. This component is expected to continue till May The aims of the campaign are as follows: Create awareness about basic environmental issues i.e. climate change, global warming, unsustainable consumption of resources, environmental degradation, etc. Realize the importance of making students environmentally conscious. Understand why we are facing an environmental crisis and what the consequences of the continuous abuse of our natural environment can be. Create awareness about concrete steps that can be taken by individuals, schools, and societies to help protect the environment.

Campaign Activities 1. Personal Reflections: I Have a Dream of a Perfect World The first lesson plan of the campaign was sent out to schools in August To set the stage for understanding the environment problem, students were asked to give ten characteristics of a perfect world which they would want for themselves. Entries were received from 83 schools and this activity was also repeated in the Right On Conference August Messages to the World Leaders Attending Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen: The Annual Right On Conference (ROC) was held on August 19 th 2009 with 182 RO members and 36 teachers participating. The issue of having a clean environment was explored in greater detail and one of the activities at the ROC involved writing messages to world leaders who were to attend the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December These messages were collected in a bottle so that they could be sent to Copenhagen as 'messages in a bottle from the children of Pakistan'. Consequently, children were able to understand the issues related to environment, develop their views on this issue and involve themselves in the process of decision making and lobbying for a cause.

3. Celebrating International Day of Climate Action Art Installation The 24th of October 2009 was an important day the world over. It was hailed as the most widespread day of climate action in the planet s history and was spearheaded by an organization called 350.org. In this regard, the Children s Museum for Peace and Human Rights had organized a walk to raise awareness about Climate Change for the students of Karachi to join millions around the world who were standing up in favour of swift and bold climate action and demanding that their leaders do the same. Unfortunately this walk had to be cancelled due to security concerns in the country. Instead a colourful installation was put up on the Sea View beach representing the 2,500 students from 33 schools in Karachi who had confirmed their participation in the Walk before it was cancelled. The different but blending colours in the installation symbolized the children in Pakistan coming together with the rest of the world for one common cause: a clean, green world. Sohail Abdullah created the installation and Kathy Kierle Ali did the photography. 4. Art Activity sent to Schools as Part of Lesson Plan: The second lesson plan of the campaign was an art activity developed for primary and secondary level students. The activity for the primary level students was called Paint to Protect Our Planet where the students were asked to design a poster on pollution, after a

brainstorming session in the class on what are the sources of pollution and what can be done to stop it. The title of the poster was: Protect My Planet. A total number of 2,775 entries came from 88 schools at the primary level. The activity for the secondary level was called Posters to Protect our Planet where the students designed posters after a thorough discussion in the class about the green house effect, its causes and effects and how awareness can be created about the climate changes that Planet Earth is going through. A total number of 1,465 posters were received from 77 schools. Renowned artists judged winning entries and an exhibition of the posters was displayed at the next RO Meeting. Entries by students for the Poster Designing Activity as part of the Posters to Protect Our Planet lesson plan March 2010

5. Teacher s Workshop on Environmental Education: In order to facilitate a better understanding of the core issues which are addressed in the I Have a Dream of a Clean, Green World, CMPHR began holding teachers workshops in individual schools since November Titled Facing the Future, not only have these workshops succeeded in creating awareness about the role of human activity in the process of climate change, but they have also spurred participating teachers into incorporating environmental education into their subject curriculum with extra vigor. To date, 42 schools have participated in these workshops with 634 teachers attending. See Table 1 for details. Presentations, brainstorming sessions and activities during the teachers workshops

8. Right On Meeting: Neem Tree Plantation in Schools The first RO Meeting of 2010 was held on 3rd February 2010 at the Bahria College, NORE, Karachi. Based on the theme of CMPHR s campaign, this RO meeting involved discussions about environmental issues facing Planet Earth. At the end of the meeting each RO club was given five or more Neem tree saplings to take back to their schools and plant them around their school compounds, in order to do their part to save the planet. 362 students attended the meeting from 15 schools. Presentations during the RO Meeting Neem tree giveaways for schools students were asked to plant them around their school premises

9. Multi-media Show: I Have a Dream of a Green, Clean World CMPHR celebrates the Universal Children s Day every year by holding a multimedia show at the Arts Council Auditorium which includes performances by students of various schools. Due to high security alert for schools in November 2009 this event had to be postponed. It was held on Wednesday, 17th of February The title of the show was I Have a Dream of a Clean, Green World and the pieces were based on the theme of protecting the planet from climate change. Two shows were held on the same day and were viewed by an audience of approximately 900 people including parents and children. At the show, students from different schools in Karachi performed plays, skits, dances and songs. Jheel Kinaray, Dost Humaray A short play performed by the students of Arts & Science Academy depicting how a family comes to the rescue of a lake and its inhabitants by saving them from water pollution. Children from The AMI School presenting a creative movement piece based on a song by Declan Galbraith, demonstrating the desire of children to come together to live in harmony with each other as well as with Planet Earth.

Story of Sadoka A dance movement by the students of the ABSA School for the Deaf. 10. Theatre Show by GRIPS at the Goethe Institut Firmly believing in the learning opportunities provided by the magic of theatre, CMPHR organized a field trip for approximately 160 students from the Brilliant Career Secondary School and the Karrar Hussain Academy. Performed by the GRIPS Theatre and hosted by the Goethe Institut, Karachi, the play titled Unfit Ball Hai Dunya Meray Aagay is an adaptation of a drama from GRIPS-Berlin and deals with the preservation of the environment. With sing-along songs and brilliant comedy, the play helped drive home the message of protecting our planet from the devastating consequences of our careless attitudes.

11. Young World Series Facing the Future Every last Saturday of the month, CMPHR publishes a page in young World DAWN Newspaper s magazine for children. From January 2010, CMPHR started a series of issues called Facing the Future to educate young people who read the magazine about the problem of climate change. The series makes connections between poverty, social injustice, over-consumption and environmental challenges in language and presentation which can be easily understood by children. DAWN Newspaper is the most widely read English newspaper in Pakistan with a readership base in excess of 759, Writing Activity Sent to Schools as Part of Lesson Plan: The third lesson plan of the campaign which was sent out to schools built up on the previous activities where students were asked to think about the environmental problems which threaten the existence of life on this planet. Activities 4 and 5 included in the third lesson plan offered a chance for students to take concrete action for a solution to these environmental problems. After brushing up on their climate change facts through the Climate Whiz Quiz, students were asked to write letters to the leaders of the world to encourage them to take action on climate change. These letters will be delivered to their intended recipients by CMPHR. This activity will conclude in August and so far 4,648 entries have been received from 50 schools.
