Accordance 8 Bible Software Webinar Greek Searches March 17, 2009 Dr. J Introduction People who do searches in Greek come in all varieties, from the first-year student to the tenured professor. So relax! Definitions Inflected- the exact form of the word: the same noun with identical declension, the same verb with identical parsing. Accordance will find only the same inflected form. Lemma- the dictionary form of a word; in Greek, that means a verb is first person, singular, active, indicative; a noun is masculine, singular, nominative, etc. The default search in Accordance, a lemma search finds all derived forms: all declensions of the noun, all conjugations of the verb, etc. Root- the base form of a word, usually a verb; Accordance finds all words derived from that root, whatever their inflection. This includes all parts of speech derived from that root, words with prefixes or suffixes and compound words with multiple roots. See chart of Gk. Plyrw/matoß at the end of these notes. Basic Searches Locating the Greek Word A. Use Accordance 8 s keyword highlighting to find the right Greek word. You ll need a key number text (e.g. NAS95S) and a tagged Greek text (GNT-T) Select the correct word, then use control click to call up the contextual menu. It s Search For selection will give you an option to search fro the lemma, the inflected word or the root. B. Type the Greek word in yourself. Accordance s helps include lists of all the Greek inflected words ( J) and lexical forms (lemmas) ( L). If you make a mistake, one of these lists will pop up and ask you to select the correct word. C. Use Accordance s Keyboard Character palette ( 6) if you are unfamiliar with the keyboard map for the Helena font.
Finding the Greek Word A basic search may be a simple or as complex as you want. All of the regular commands are available to you, plus the grammatically tagged text commands. command is particularly useful in grammatical searches. Example: =plh/rwma =plh/rwma@ [NOUN neuter singular genitive =plh/rwma@ [NOUN neuter singular genitive]<within 2 Words> +kairo/ß Construct Searches Construct searches use a graphical user interface; they can be used either for simple or very, very complex searches. This construct search is equal to the most complicated Basic Search in the previous example:
Here is an explanation of the terms in the Construct window: WITHIN =[WITHIN] command INTER Intervening words that may occur between elements AGREE Degree of grammatical agreement required between elements Adj. Adjective Art. Article Impr. Improper preposition Noun Noun Prep Preposition Verb Verb Adv. Adverb Conj. Conjunction Inter. Interjection Part. Participle Pron. Pronoun ANY =[ANY] grammatical tag command LEX Lexical form INFLECT Inflected form ROOT Root form CHAR. Any Greek character (including punctuation, accents, etc.) HITS =[HITS] command COUNT =[COUNT] command PLACE The position (place) in the search field this item occupies NOT Negates other items (drag over them to negate it, drag over again to change it back to positive) Finally, here is an explanation of the construct interface itself: Tip: practice construct searches by trying to construct a search for a verse you already have at hand!
Example: select any verse in the GNT-T and use the Parse command on the Resource palette to generate a list of the parsed words. Now, try to construct searches using the information on the chart. Here s an example, crafted from information on Eph. 1:10: Amplifying a Search Once you find that word or phrase you searched for, Accordance offers you four ways to amplify it. 1. Triple-click to your favorite lexicon Selecting the Greek word and triple-clicking it opens the top resource in Greek Tools. To change the default resource, rearrange the order of the modules by dragging a different one to the top of the list in the Library Window. Be sure to click Update when you are finished. The next three kinds of amplification all have more options: Amplifying from a Word in a Tagged Text to another Text From a tagged text: [regular] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew lemma. [option] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew inflected. [shift-option] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew root.
Amplifying from a Phrase in a Tagged Text to another Text From a tagged text: [regular] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew lemmas. [shift] does a fuzzy search for the Greek/Hebrew phrase. [option] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew inflected words. [shift-option] searches the text for the Greek/Hebrew roots. Amplifying to a Tool The contents of every tool are assigned to different fields: article titles, English content, key number, Scripture, etc. When amplifying to a tool, Accordance begins with the most appropriate field and searches each one in turn until the word is found. 2. Amplify to a specific Greek text or tool using the Resource palette. Select the Greek word, then chose the resource you want to open form the Resource palette. You may use any of the modifiers listed above. 3. Use custom Tool Sets for fast, repetitive tasks. Set up custom collections of Greek tools, English tools, General tools and reference tools using the Define Set command from the pop-up menu in Tool Sets. This allows for very rapid searching of selected resources. 4. Search All to access every text or tool. Preset Search All categories include All Bibles All Tools and simply All [resources]. You can also define a set under this command, which may include modules from texts, tools and user tools. This global search is the most powerful one Accordance offers. Conclusion Accordance offers a powerful suite of features for Greek users at every level, whether you are a first-year student or writing a Greek textbook! Gk. Plhrw/matoß Inflected Lemma Root "=plhrw matoß" =plh/rwma +plhro/w [option] [no modifier] [shift-option] "=plhrw matoß" plh/rwma = 11 aónaplhro/w (aóna, plhro/w) = 6 to fill up, supply, fulfill plhrw mata = 2 aóntanaplhro/w (aónti, aóna, plhro/w) = 1 to fill up plhrw mati = 1 e kplhro/w (e k, plhro/w) = 1 to fulfill, carry out plhrw matoß = 3 e kplh/rwsiß (e k, plhro/w) = 1 filling up, accomplishment pamplhqei (pa ß, plhro/w) = 1 together pi mplhmi (plhro/w) = 24 to fill, fulfill pleona zw (plhro/w) = 9 to increase pleonekte w (plhro/w, e cw) = 5 to be greedy; to take advantage of pleone kthß (plhro/w, e cw) = 4 greedy person pleonexi a (plhro/w, e cw) = 10 greediness; lust plhvqoß (plhro/w) = 31 multitude plhqu/nw (plhro/w) = 12 to multiply plh/mmura (plhro/w) = 1 flood plh/n (plhro/w)= 31 (+gen) only, except (prep.); but, nevertheless (conj.)
