3 For the Teacher What is Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice? Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice is a practice program that focuses on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) for Reading and Language Arts. Students develop mastery of the state performance indicators from the Tennessee English Language Arts Standards. To develop this mastery, students read a variety of passages and respond to multiple-choice questions that correlate with the state performance indicators. The six-level program is designed for students in grades 3 through 8. The grade 6 book has three practice tests. Each test has a total of 80 multiple-choice items. The grade 6 book contains a total of 240 multiplechoice items. Each practice test in the grade 6 book contains literary selections such as poetry, myths, articles, and stories. Multiple-choice items follow each reading selection. Each multiple-choice item correlates with a state performance indicator that appears in one of the seven reading and language arts TCAP reporting categories: 1. Language: indicators involving correct usage of parts of speech, correct punctuation and capitalization, kinds of sentences, correct spelling, and formation of contractions and plural forms 2. Vocabulary: indicators involving affixes, synonyms and antonyms, context clues, and usage of multiplemeaning words 3. Writing and Research: indicators involving purpose for writing, audience, topic sentences, sequence of ideas, word choice, appropriate and reliable sources of information, and graphic organizers 4. Communication and Media: indicators involving main ideas of speeches, summaries of speeches, the purpose of a medium, and the visual image that best reinforces a viewpoint 5. Logic: indicators involving inferences and conclusions, facts and opinions, cause-effect relationships, analogies, and sequence of events in text 6. Informational Text: indicators involving questions for focus and clarity, main ideas, illustrations, text features, parts of books, factual statements, summaries, and sequential order 7. Literature: indicators involving rhyming words, setting, characters, plot and plot features, forms of text, author s purpose, point of view, figurative language, and sound effects How does Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice correlate to the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program for Reading and Language Arts? Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice provides students with reading and language experiences required by the Tennessee English Language Arts Standards detailed within the state performance indicators. Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice includes literary and informational readings (as well as non-media texts such as photographs) to provide students with a variety of genres for practice with each standard. The multiplechoice questions correlate directly with the state performance indicators. For more detailed information about how Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice correlates with the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, refer to pages 5 through 8 of this guide. 1

4 How should I use Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice? Procedures on how to use Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice are detailed in the text that follows. How do I introduce my students to Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice? Provide students with erasers and sharpened No. 2 pencils. Have students read all information on the inside front cover of the student book. Ask the students to pay particular attention to the tips on responding to multiple-choice items. Please see the below chart for a suggested schedule for administering each practice test: Practice of Items Testing Time in Minutes Practice Practice Practice The time schedule in the chart does not include preparatory time for the distribution of books and pencils, or the time for general instructions. The preparatory time should be no longer than 15 minutes. You may want to allow a 10-minute break midway through each practice. The session for each practice is 90 minutes plus a 10-minute break, for a total of 100 minutes from the beginning to the end of the practice. What is the correction procedure? Use the completed Answer Forms on pages 3 and 4 to correct the answers. When students complete each practice test in one sitting of 90 minutes (including a 10 minute break), the 80 items should be corrected orally with the students during a minute follow-up session, preferably set for the following day. Whichever correction procedure you select, it is important that you correct the items with the students, discussing why a response is or is not correct. Students sometimes answer incorrectly because of a range of misconceptions about the strategy. The discussion as to why the choice is incorrect helps students understand why another choice is most likely the better response. How should I use the results of Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice? Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice provides a quick review of a student s understanding of performance indicators addressed in the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program. The practice book can be a useful diagnostic tool for identifying state performance indicators that need further study and reinforcement. Use the Scope and Sequence on pages 9 through 12 to identify the performance indicator that each item practices and assesses. For students who respond to an item incorrectly, provide additional practice to remediate the problem. Write the beginning time and ending time on the chalkboard for students. Where do students record their answers? Students in grade 6 use the Answer Forms on pages 91 and 92 of the student book to fill in their answers. Allow time for students to fill in personal information. Add this activity to the preparatory activities detailed in the Introduction preceding this section. Ensure that each student knows how to fill in the answer circles. Remind students that if they change an answer, they should erase fully their unwanted answer. 2

5 Correlations to the Tennessee Reading and Language Arts Indicators Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice is based on the state performance indicators as set forth in the English Language Arts Standards adopted by the Tennessee State Board of Education for the academic year. This chart correlates each question in Tennessee Ready Reading and Language Arts Practice to a specific state performance indicator in one of the seven TCAP reporting categories. Tennessee Reading and Language Arts Indicators Language Identify the correct use of nouns (i.e., common/ proper, singular/plural, possessives) and pronouns (i.e., agreement, subject, object) within context Identify the correct use of verbs (i.e., action, linking, regular/irregular, agreement) within context Identify the correct use of adjectives (i.e., common/proper, comparative forms) and adverbs (i.e., comparative forms) within context Identify the correct use of prepositional phrases (place prepositional phrases correctly according to the words they modify within the sentence) within context Identify the correct use of conjunctions (i.e., coordinating and subordinating) and interjections within context Choose the correct use of quotation marks, commas (i.e., in direct quotations, with explanatory material within the quote, proper use with end marks) and colons (i.e., in business letters, preceding a list of items) Identify within context a variety of appropriate sentence-combining techniques (i.e., comma + coordinating conjunctions, introductory words, appositives, interrupters) Select the most appropriate method to correct a run-on sentence (i.e., conjunctions, semicolons, and periods to join or separate elements) Recognize usage errors occurring within context (i.e., double negatives, troublesome words {to/to/two, their/there/they re, its/it s, sit/set, lie/lay, affect/effect, sit/set, lie/lay, may/can, leave/let, teach/learn, accept/except, capitol/ capital, principle/principal, between/among}) Identify the correct spelling of plurals and possessives Identify sentences with correct subject-verb agreement (person/number) within context Identify the correct use of commas (i.e., compound sentences, coordinating conjunctions, introductory words, appositives, interrupters) within context.
