4 Reading an Internet Site Identifying the Parts of a Website Offline The minute you go online, you see pictures, ads, articles, and headlines. If you know how to read a website, that means you can tell the difference among all of the parts. Directions: Study the website above, and answer the questions to prove just how savvy a website reader you are. 1. What is the name of the website and its slogan? These are generally located in the banner on the page. 2. What is the advertisement on the page trying to sell to schools? 3. What are the three blog article titles?,, 4. This website tells different stories about student successes every week. What is the name of the student who is being profiled this week? 5. What award has this website won, and in what category? 5 Reading an Internet Site Webbing a Website Online Did you know that reading online is like reading in 3-D?! Reading online is different than reading a traditional text because the reading is in layers. The first page, the homepage, acts like a table of contents. It tells you where to click in order to get the information you need from the layers underneath. The homepage is also a place for banners, ads, pictures, and menu bars. As an example, let s look at Mama Mia s Italian Restaurant and its website. The first layer has been filled in already, but can you fill in the second layer of the website web? 6 Reading An Internet Site Identifying the Parts of Your School s Webpage Online A. Go to your school s webpage. (If your school doesn t have a webpage, go a website for a nearby school or district.) Draw it in the box provided. If there is a paragraph of text, you can scribble the area that represents text in a text box that you create. You don t have to draw the pictures, but make sure you draw a box or doodle where they appear. Make sure you include the banner, all text boxes, image boxes, and menu bars. B. On a separate sheet of paper, create five questions. These questions should help a partner to analyze the website. Here are some sentence stems to help you develop your questions: What is the purpose of the? Where is the slogan or mission statement? What does the symbol represent?
