2 Part II Course Details 1. Abstract This course aims to enable students to perform their practices related to social capital and sustainable development in the community. For these practices, the course is to boost and consolidate their analytic and critical skills and knowledge about professionally relevant theories related to social capital and sustainable development. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) (CILOs state what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the course according to a given standard of performance.) Evaluate the theories of social capital and sustainable 30% development; 2. Apply the theories of social capital and sustainable 30% development to social practice; and 3. Critically analyze and devise social practices related to 40% social capital and sustainable development. * If weighting is assigned to CILOs, they should add up to 100%. 100% # Please specify the alignment of CILOs to the Gateway Education Programme Intended Learning outcomes (PILOs) in Section A of Annex. A1: Attitude Develop an attitude of discovery/innovation/creativity, as demonstrated by students possessing a strong sense of curiosity, asking questions actively, challenging assumptions or engaging in inquiry together with teachers. A2: Ability Develop the ability/skill needed to discover/innovate/create, as demonstrated by students possessing critical thinking skills to assess ideas, acquiring research skills, synthesizing knowledge across disciplines or applying academic knowledge to self-life problems. A3: Accomplishments Demonstrate accomplishment of discovery/innovation/creativity through producing /constructing creative works/new artefacts, effective solutions to real-life problems or new processes. 3

3 3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (TLAs designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs.) TLA Brief Description CILO No. Hours/week (if applicable) TLA1: Lectures The instructor will give lectures to illuminate relevant theories and applications. Emphasis will be on related social practices in a professional and theoretically informed way. TLA2: Project Visit TLA3: Presentation and Class Discussion Student groups will be arranged to visit organizations or projects promoting social capital or sustainable development. They are to discover good professional practices in relation to social capital and sustainable development. Based on the field visits, each group will make an oral presentation, on the theory and findings concerning the project and discussion of ways of good practice. These presentations are to facilitate more class discussion, discovery, and innovation. Besides, students are to discuss about the theories, practices, and preparation for their group presentations and individual reports, and present what they discuss. 3

4 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (ATs) (ATs are designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs.) The word length of the report is 2,500 words, covering theory, findings, and discussion. Its unique contribution needs to be clear, as in its discussion section, to unfold discoveries and innovations useful for professional practice related to social capital or sustainable development. AT2: Group Presentations (10%) Student groups will be arranged to visit organizations or projects promoting social capital and sustainable development. Each group will then make a coherent presentation, on the theory and findings about the project, and provide a discussion to show discoveries and innovations furthering the professional practice of the project. AT3: Class Discussion (10%) Students are to contribute actively in the visits and contributing in discussion in the presentation sessions. Their critical comments and innovative ideas for strengthening the professional practice are expected products of class discussion. A one-page report showing the fruit of discussion is required. AT4: Quiz (30%) A quiz is to assess the student s grasp of essential concepts and other knowledge introduced in course. It is necessary to ensure that the student has the foundation for performing the other tasks. 3
