1 Northern Kentucky University Department of Accounting, Finance and Business Law Financial Statement Analysis ACC 308 SEMESTER: Fall 2014 INSTRUCTOR: Dr. J.C. Thompson, OFFICE HOURS: MW 12:30-2:45 PM and 5:45 6:15 PM COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to prepare students to analyze, interpret and use financial statements effectively. This will be accomplished using four steps: (1) analyzing the industry and economic environment in which the firm operates; (2) analyzing recent financial and market performance of the firm using financial statement statements and stock market information; (3) synthesizing this material in a coherent manner; and (4) writing and presenting a report on the financial condition of a company and its prospects to classmates and faculty PREREQUISITE: ACC 200 and ACC 201; cannot be taken for credit by students with ACC 300 credit OUR VISION: The College of Business seeks to enrich the lives of its students and help transform its communities. ASSURANCE OF LEARNING: The College of Business has established learning outcomes for all its majors. All business majors share some learning outcomes, and some learning outcomes are specific to the majors. The objectives for this course are listed below. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: The general course objectives are (1) to give the student a foundation in the concept of financial statement analysis and its value to various stakeholders (2) to introduce the student to analytic/decision models used by practitioners, (3) to provide the student the tools necessary to do a complete analysis of a firm based on its financial statements and the economic environment in which it operates

2 SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student should be able to: 1) assess the financial condition of a firm using financial statement ratios and other metrics dealing with liquidity, asset management, leverage and profitability while understanding the limitations inherent in these analyses as well as the need to analyze these metrics over a number of time periods 2) understand the differences in the way firms prepare their financial statements and the influence of both GAAP and IFRS in their preparation 3) understand the accounting cycle 4) understand the relationships among the primary financial statements balance sheet, income statement and the statement of cash flows 5) perform an analysis of a publically traded company and present clearly a business and financial summary to the group TEXT: Interpreting and Analyzing Financial Statements: A Project-Based Approach, Schoenebeck and Holtzman, 6 th ed. EXAMS: There will be three exams during the semester. I will provide at least one week s warning prior to an exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. The exams will contain material from the text as well as outside sources deemed appropriate by the instructor. These outside sources will include but not be limited to Bloomberg.com. In addition, each student will prepare an analysis of a publically traded company chosen by you and approved by the instructor. The results of the analysis will be presented in writing and in class. GRADING: The course grade will be determined as follows: Exam I 20% Exam II 20% Final Exam 30% Company Analysis 30%

3 Grades will be assigned based on the following: A = 93% A- = 90% B+ = 87% B = 83% B- = 80% C+ = 77% C = 73% C- = 70% D+ = 67% D = 60% F = <60% ATTENDANCE POLICY: None. However, numerous studies have shown a strong correlation between attendance and performance. SCHEDULE OF TOPICS: It is expected that the following chapters will be covered during the semester: CHAPTERS: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and all appendices. These chapters and appendices will be covered in depth in some cases and as a review in others. They will be covered in the order indicated above. STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The maintenance of academic standards and integrity includes the obligation not to cheat or plagiarize. A student who uses a dishonest or deceitful means to obtain a grade is guilty of cheating; a student who submits another s work as one s own without adequate attribution is guilty of plagiarism. Identical work will earn a grade of zero. Students are fully responsible for learning the course content and material disseminated in the class. Absences do not release you from this responsibility. Then, you will communicate the results of your analysis in a detailed written report and highlight the results in a presentation. Accordingly, this project will help you build your critical thinking, technology, and communication skills.
