2 It s not just about academics, it is about preparing you for your future. By 2020 there will be 3 million fewer low skilled jobs than today and you will have had 10 jobs by the time you are 38. You will need a wide variety of skills. Most importantly you will need skills that you can transfer to a variety of different jobs. You need to know how to make decisions that are right for you and how to face the unknown and knowing what you are capable of.

4 You are now a student by choice Take every opportunity to improve your learning

5 Your teachers will have high expectations of you. Have high expectations of yourself. Establish yourself with a good reputation with your teachers. Start positively and keep it up!

6 After Y12 exams we formally begin the application process with personal statement writing Oxbridge, Medicine and Veterinary Science are early applications usually mid October The deadline for all other applications is January of Y13 You should consider visiting universities and different courses during Y12, use the Prospectus Shelves in the Regis foyer.

8 Above all we expect you to dress appropriately You need one smart outfit for public events, interviews and Mass We do not accept Clothing with inappropriate slogans Clothing that is revealing, including low cut tops, crop tops, transparent clothing, shoulders to knees should be covered Very tight fitting clothes Facial piercings with the exception of ears Heads of Sixth Form, Tutors and any staff member can challenge you on your clothing choices If you are judged to be dressed inappropriately, you will be asked to go home and change, at your expense.

9 Make a plan of your time including commitments outside school your handbook has an example plan for you and your tutors will have more blank copies Stick to it Use your planner!

10 You will now be in much smaller classes and have 4 lessons a week per subject Your teachers will expect you to approach them outside of lessons to discuss work or submit drafts of work prior to deadline

11 It is recommended that you match your time in the classroom outside. You should be spending 4 hours per week per A Level Subject

12 Subject Staff If you are struggling with your subject, talk to them first. They may be able to explain ro resolve the issue Think about choosing a time outside of a lesson when you can have their undivided attention

13 Pastoral Team: Your first port of call is your tutor Miss Nokes and Mrs Akers are always available to help you. Knock on the door! You have tutor periods Monday to Friday. Tutors are a brilliant resource for you and will get to know you well. Attendance is compulsory

14 Attitude to Learning is key! All students and parents should have received and signed a contract for learning. It outlines the points we will cover tonight. Some students will also have an extended contract, these will be issued tomorrow. 23 We usually say you can change in the first fortnight. As there are 4 lessons a week, any longer and you have missed too much to catch up. This must be arranged through Miss Nokes.

24 If you are sick, you must ring the office before 8.30am on this number (put it in your phone)

25 We will ring home if you do not attend a lesson. Persistent absence will result in you being put in disciplinary procedures which can ultimately result in you being asked to leave the Sixth Form

26 We will authorise absence for Uni interviews Hospital (not gp) appointments Driving Test (not lessons) Family reasons (not holidays) This can be achieved by getting an absence form from your tutor. It must be signed by the teachers that you would be in lesson with that day.

27 We recommend you take work no more than 8 hours paid work per week. Research shows anything above this has a negative effect on your grades Sixth Form Bursary is available to some students, Miss Nokes will have spoken to you over the next few days if you are eligible (this would be if you had Free School Meals in Y11 or qualify for them now)

28 You should use the quiet room or the common room during your study periods. It is a time when there should be a peaceful environment. The LRC is also open to the sixth form all day.

29 1. Balancing your time Share your time equally between homework, friends, relationships, jobs, and activities 2. Limit mobile Phone/ social media use Try to keep your phone out of your study area whilst you are working 3. Good relationships with parents/ carers Don t stress yourself out with extra arguments 4. How long/ when to revise Don t over-work yourself, do 45 minutes sessions then have a break 5. Use your frees and go to the library Try to do homework in free periods, its a waste of time otherwise

30 6. Be organised Have a large ring binder for each subject with dividers to keep all your work in order 7. Find ways to revise that suit you I found spider diagrams and Index cards useful 8. Testing each other Siblings/ parents/ carers can help test you, i found that explaining theories and case studies to them, helped me understand and remember them best 9. First year counts AS is worth 50% of your overall grade, try your best now so you don t have extra pressure re-sitting modules etc next year 10. Grasp the opportunity now! Don t leave it too late, start working now, it s worth it

31 1. Create a suitable environment Think about a suitable space bedroom s are not ideal as there are lots of distractions. 2. Get organised Students will have lots of folders, they need available space to accommodate this. 3. Ensure your children have breaks Monitor how much they are working and make sure they do not work too much. An overload of information is not productive. 4. Reduction in requests to do things around the house, so they focus on studying Less time on chores for the duration of their studies means that more time can be spent revising and doing homework 5. Create a timetable Sit down together and discuss a realistic timetable have this written down so they can follow it.

32 6. Saturday jobs Looks good on a CV, however working Saturday and Sunday can potentially take up too much time. 7. UCAS deadline Start thinking about what you want to do now, as before you know it, you will be applying! Do not leave it too late. 8. Help with revision Make sure you help them by testing and asking questions. 9. Social media and phone Reduce the amount of time they are using phones etc as it distracts them from learning. I acknowledge this is easier said than done. 10. Support Crucial to their success and worth it in the end.
