1 Bienvenidos: You can call me Maestro, profe or Sr. Winje. Description: No prior knowledge necessary. We start with the basics. I ll speak lots of Spanish, but always clarify in English. Students learn lots of basic vocabulary, useful phrases, and start learning how the language works. They will be able to speak and understand a variety of basic conversations in Spanish. In Spanish I, students will: 1) Become familiar with the people, places, and culture associated with the Spanish Language. 2) Experience success in a new language enough to realize they can truly apply it in their present and future lives. 3) Gain knowledge of world travel and how to meet and converse with native Spanish Speakers. Main rule: Respect Texts: Dime I (We also utilize a variety of online resources for authentic reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary practice.) On time to class! I follow the school tardy policy. After two I call home. Materials needed: 1) Red pen for making corrections 2) Highlighters 3) Either a composition book or spiral notebook specifically for Spanish that will be used daily and checked every couple weeks for a participation grade. 4) A Spanish section in your 3-ringed notebook for handouts and other 3 holed paper. 5) Recommended: Spanish/English dictionary, especially for those who plan to continue with Spanish 6) Optional- Phone with access to online translator Online Translator Warning- It is easy for me to tell if you have used an online translator to do your work. If your work contains verb tenses, words, and other structures we have never gone over, and you can t tell me what any of it means if I ask you, you will get a zero until you can do the assignment using language you actually know. Online translators are tricky to use. You need to be familiar with the context from which the word or phrase you want to learn came. Sometimes translators give you an incorrect word, and often when you type whole sentences or phrases, the translation makes no sense. This is why language has to be learned within context and with guidance, and merely using a translator does not actually help you acquire language. Wordreference.com is the translator to use if you do need to use a translator when trying to figure out what something means from a reading or listening activity we do. It gives you a variety of possible translations, examples within the context of a sentence, and useful

2 expressions which utilize that word. There is also a forum you can check in to monitor conversations about the word or phrase you are interested in, and you can post your own questions as well. Missed days/work: Get a phone number from a fellow classmate. Call this person to ask about what we did in class and if there was any homework. If possible, get the work in that next day. If not, you will have one day to make it up. If there is a family vacation or multiple day sickness, we ll talk. Unexcused late work: Get it in the next day for ½ credit. After that it s a 0. If you know ahead of time you will be gone, talk to me about the work you will miss. I strive to incorporate different kinds of opportunities for students to use the language, and I encourage students to use what they have learned, in and out of the classroom. Supplemental interactive listening experience- We use the videos and audio cassettes that accompany the Dime texts Mi vida loca y Destinos are online video series we use to supplement the texts We also utilize a variety of online sources for supplemental listening practice *Quizzes- We typically have a quiz each week, sometimes two, having to do with what we have been going over in the current unit. I prefer lots of quizzes and don t do any huge

4 exams. We will have quizzes on vocabulary, grammar, readings, culture, and other odds and inns that come up. I am known to give the occasional pop quiz. If you are paying attention, they shouldn t be a problem. *Oral Quizzes- I will be monitoring students speaking progress as we do pair activities in class, but there will be a couple times I give students some speaking prompts in the form of questions they need to be able to answer, pictures, or comics where they need to be able to explain what is going on. Students are always given these prompts ahead of time, and there will be class time dedicated to practice them. *Projects- Typically within each unit, after learning the new grammar and language structure, students will do some kind of project to show me how they can apply what they have learned. Some times these will be done in pairs. The main ones are listed above, but we do many more smaller-scale activities and mini-conversations daily. Don t stress out about all of these presentations. Most of them are really short and practiced lots before you do them. We do a lot of talking in front of others in this class to practice speaking Spanish, sometimes just a partner, sometimes a small group. I will make sure you are well prepared and feel comfortable before you present in front of the class. *Participation- You can t be shy learning another language. Be prepared to make mistakes, and that s alright, this is how we learn. I don t expect you to speak perfect Spanish in this class. Please ask if you have questions, or come and see me before or after class or school. Participation is a big part of your grade in Spanish I & II. *Pair work- Each day we may be doing mini-skits, games, pair activities, book activities, readings, etc. When you are practicing with your partner, make sure you stay on task. If you finish early, try the activity again, practice flashcards, or raise your hand and ask what to do next. You will get your full participation points if you stay on task. Grading: I put all the points into one pot, but it is roughly weighed out like this: Participation: 40% (Homework, in-class participation, some at home tasks) Assessment of material covered: 60% (Projects and quizzes) *Reading*- Studies show that reading lots in the language you are learning helps you gain more fluency in that language, and is a great way to learn language in context. To supplement the small readings in our textbook, we will also be reading a mini-novel in Spanish, started about half way through this course called Pobre Ana (Poor Ana). In addition to this, students will be reading, and learning how to tell stories accompanied with pictures series to help tell them. If you are interested in learning about the methodology behind this way of learning language, look up TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading

5 and Storytelling). In Spanish I, we use Cuéntame and Cuéntame más ( Tell me and Tell me more ), and do the first couple chapters in each book. Culture- Each unit revolves around a Hispanic city, and has short readings and a video series that goes along with it. We will follow this, but I will also supplement these with other readings, slides, videos, images, stories, and travel tips, including some of my own travel experiences in other Spanish speaking places. I want students leaving this class with an understanding of what the peoples lives and homes are like who speak Spanish around the world. Here are some other things that will be covered: Daily cultural expressions Identifying Hispanic countries and capitals Hispanic surnames History of Hispanics in US Weather Differences in South America Food/Recipes Ancient civilizations (Spanish I: Focus on Incas) Sports Variety of Hispanic national holidays and celebrations Dear parents, I truly value your involvement in your son/daughter s education. Please ask them often what they have been learning in Spanish class, and maybe you will learn a bit, too! I may send work home sometimes that requires a parent/guardian signature.
