1 Reception Term 1 Curriculum Overview Dear Parents, We would like to say a very warm welcome to our Reception parents and children. We have had a lovely start to the term with all of the children settling in beautifully. We have a busy time ahead of us in the lead up to our October half term and then in to December. Throughout the term we will be using learning centres with the children. This involves different Literacy, Numeracy, Topic and Art activities to be happening simultaneously with the teachers being able to group the children specifically in order to target the different learning needs within each class. In Literacy we will be using the Jolly Phonics scheme as we learn to read. We will begin with all of the initial letter sounds which will, in turn, help the children to begin to blend short words together. For those children who have already begun to read, further challenges will be set using a variety of different texts, both in school and through our home reading program. In Numeracy we will be focusing on the numbers 0-10, concentrating not only on rote counting but on one-to-one correspondence, sequencing and number lines. Early in the term we will be holding a Curriculum Evening to share with you, in more detail, our classroom set up, teaching methods and curriculum. Our focus topics this term are Ourselves and People Who Help Us. We will be exploring similarities and differences that we all have, our families and all of the people at home and in school who help us. Throughout the school year, the children will have the opportunity to take part in different assemblies. This term, Reception 39 will conduct a class assembly on Friday 26 th September. Ms Somaya and her class would like to warmly invite parents and friends to join them at 10am in the Cooper Hall. We will be taking the Reception children on an excursion before the October half term. 2 Year: Reception Term: 1 (First half) Topic: Ourselves Personal, Social and Emotional Development Develop a good awareness of personal hygiene. Develop an understanding of self and others. Develop self esteem. Begin to explore surroundings and new activities on offer. Learn to share new experiences with others in the school environment. Communication Language and Literacy Use talk to organise and sequence events. Use language to describe feelings and experiences. Follow recipe with adults Vocabulary development through word games, songs and nursery rhymes. Vocabulary development. Begin to develop phonic and word building skills. Speak within a range of settings Develop an understanding of print Experiment with writing. Guided reading Paired reading with teacher Ourselves This topic is taught through an interactive and multi sensory approach. We will look at similarities and differences among ourselves; such as likes and dislikes, appearance and families. The topic will be explored through discussions, books, play and guided activities. Mathematical Development Rote counting 1-10 Numeral recognition 1-7, Counting groups of objects to 7 Counting songs -,eg: 1 potato 2 potato, 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive, 5 cheeky monkeys. Naming and sorting basic shapes and using shapes to generate basic patterns. Physical Development Develop fine motor skills, incl. pencil grip. Learn about looking after ourselves through exercise and rest. Develop hand-eye coordination. Develop an awareness of personal space. Develop gross motor skills through P.E. activities incl. hockey, football and touch rugby. Develop awareness of the need for water safety and develop water confidence. Knowledge and Understanding of the world Explore characteristics that make them unique. Identify and sequence stages in their own lives. Explore their places in family and friendship groups. Comment on significant personal events. Look at and explore their own and other cultures. Note changes in personal appearances e.g. height. ICT explore basic computer skills and programmes. Creative development Paint pictures of own choosing Use a variety of materials and tools to paint, draw and colour Use instruments made from different materials Explore and differentiate colour. Create and use props for role play. Sing a variety of familiar songs.
3 Year: Reception Term: 1 (Second half) Topic: People who help us Personal, Social and Emotional Development Develop an understanding of right and wrong. Speak confidently within and in front of a group Learn to look after own belongings carefully. Learn how to work and play cooperatively and positively with peers and adults. Learn to choose and participate in activities independently. Communication Language and Literacy Vocabulary development through word games, songs and nursery rhymes. Phonics, word building and sight words Speaking within a range of settings Experiment with writing; begin to form recognisable letters. Guided reading. Paired reading with teacher Write own name clearly and legibly People who help us This topic explores people in the wider community with whom the children interact, such as bus drivers, school teachers and shopkeepers. We will explore this topic in a highly interactive manner, including visitors from within the school. Mathematical Development Matching shapes jigsaws Number recognition 0-10 Count on one place from a given number 0-5. Use size language big, little, tall, small. Use shapes and arrangements of shapes in construction activities Make comparisons between groups of objects. Physical Development Search games, space games Gaining control over objects by pushing, throwing, catching Development of healthy practices eg; drinking water, eating good foods Note changes in the body after exercise Manipulate materials play dough, salt dough Swimming and PE Knowledge and Understanding of the World Discuss the roles of different people within the school environment Discuss differing roles within the home Discuss the roles of different people in the local community Continue to explore computer programmes and develop ICT skills Creative Development Combining media for creative work - seeds, pasta, pulses, paint, glue Print with leaves, wood, fruit Paint and draw using different media, tools and equipment. Choose colours for a purpose. Join in with favourite songs and rhymes.
4 PERSONAL, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT MATHS CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY Throughout the term the focus will be on developing self esteem, a sense of self and an awareness of others around us. The children will be offered guided activities and will be lead into small and large group discussions about themselves- how are they the same and different from their class mates, why do we need family and friends, how can we look after ourselves and our families and friends? There will be plenty of opportunities for children to develop their self confidence, through talking amongst and in front of their peers and attempting new and challenging activities. There will be constant encouragement for the children to look after and take care of their personal belongings and the belongings of others, as well as looking after their friends and peers by doing the right thing by them. As a group there will be discussions about personal hygiene and why we need to keep ourselves clean and healthy. Shapes, colours, numerals to 10, patterns and size language are the main subjects covered this term. The classes will start by looking at basic shapes and colours, using games, work sheets and work books and construction materials to explore these concepts. This term will see a focus and consolidation on numbers 0-10, with an emphasis on reading and writing these numerals. The children develop good number concepts such as one-to-one correlation of number words and groups of objects. Rhymes and counting songs will be used to enhance this knowledge. The children will be learning to write these numerals, through tracing exercises and individual practice. Patterns will be explored, looking at patterns of repeating colours and shapes and by finding them in everyday life. The language of size will be explored through games and guided play, music and dance and activity work sheets. This term the creative aspect is all about introducing the children to a wide range of materials, with which they can paint, glue, cut, join and build with. The children will be offered many different activities that allow them to explore colour and shape, size and patterning. There will be a variety of tools for the children to work with and the children s ideas and suggestions will be followed up wherever possible. Sand and water play will also be incorporated. Music and dance is another aspect of the creative curriculum. The children will explore instruments and music, through singing and playing. There will be opportunities for the children to express themselves through movement and dance, with games and free dance being offered. The children will be taught phonics, become familiar with letter shapes and the correct way to form the letters. Through phonological awareness training, the children will learn to see and hear word patterns and rhyme. The children will begin to read on sight a range of familiar words; names, captions and labels from the environment, favourite books, etc. They will also learn to write their own name independently, in an accurate and legible manner. The children will experience books in a wide variety of situations; library time, shared reading and guided reading and will be encouraged to explore familiar stories through dramatic play, puppets and other appropriate props.
5 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD MUSIC MANDARIN Physical games and movement will be addressed through many different types of activities, including P.E and Swimming. In P.E the children will practise ball skills such as; bouncing and catching, passing, dribbling, ground control, spatial awareness, basic passing, and small sided games. In swimming, the children will be introduced to water safety rules and will develop water confidence. Within in the class room there will ample opportunities for the children to participate in movement games and dancing, and the outdoor play area will be used for cycling and other large movement activities. There will be a strong focus on developing fine motor skills through use of play dough, threading, cutting and drawing/writing activities. The children will explore characteristics that make them unique; personal favourites, physical differences etc. They will identify and sequence events and stages that have shaped their lives and explore their place in the family. The children will be helped to identify the varying traditions and cultures of their own and other families. Activities such as role play, small and large group discussion and family photos will be used. The children will be introduced to persons in the locality who help them; persons within the school, at home and in the wider community will be discussed. The children will have regular Mandarin classes. ICT will be used on an ongoing basis, so as to familiarise the children with computers, and the working of them. Pupils will be exploring the basic musical elements such as Pitch, Tempo, Dynamics and Timbre through the use of tuned and untuned percussion and their voices. Pupils will also work towards performances such as assemblies, UN day and the Christmas production. Pupils will also start to explore composition. This term the children will be introduced about the Mid-autumn Festival, and they will also learn numbers from 11 to 20. In addition to this, they are going to learn to introduce themselves and their family members. They will learn about the colors as well. The activities will include story telling, such as an ancient Chinese legend about the Mid-autumn Festival, songs, games and drawing.
6 ICT PE SWIMMING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The children will develop speaking and listening skills through opportunities to explore and talk about I.C.T. in the wider world. They use a computer keyboard to identify letters and numbers and experiment with mark making and emergent text on the computer. They respond to multimedia stimuli to communicate their thoughts and ideas and extend their vocabulary through structured use of suitable I.C.T. activities. Electronic books, photo stories, slide shows or video clips can be used to prompt discussion and aid recall. The children will be introduced to the interactive whiteboard within their classroom. During 1 st term the students will be learning and involved in two units of work: gymnastics and ball skills. In gymnastics the focus will be on balance, such as walking along a beam, balancing while doing different skills and group balances. The students will also learn forward rolls, straddle rolls and side rolls. The children will link these skills together using a variety of gymnastics equipment. During the ball skills component the children will work both individually and in groups to improve their team-work skills. They will practise bouncing and catching a ball, throwing to a partner and small sided group games. In Swimming the students will revise all the pool and water safety rules and expectations. The focus will be on increasing water confidence and enjoyment as well as improving their individual skills. Breathing and stroke techniques for front crawl will be introduced with and without floatation aids. Activities such as diving for submersed objects and water entries will also be used to improve water confidence. In every lesson the individual needs of each student and varying levels will be catered for, with an emphasis of participation and enjoyment in physical activity.
