3 B. Objectives 1. Summary of the main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course To graduate a physician who: 1. is aware of the personal qualities and attitudes required by a physician caring for children and their families e.g. empathy, concern, gentleness, etc. 2. has acquired adequate basic knowledge and skills in pediatrics which enable him/her to proceed into subsequent general practice, specialty training or research activities At the end of the course the student is expected to: Carry out, record and interpret a complete physical examination in all pediatric age groups identify and solve common clinical problems in pediatrics by providing a provisional diagnosis and appropriate differential diagnosis Recognize urgent and emergency situations in pediatrics and be able to outline an appropriate plan of action Outline a general plan of investigations and management of common pediatric problems as they relate to Saudi Arabia Demonstrate an understanding of how to use the laboratory to reach a diagnosis of common pediatric problems Demonstrate knowledge of community problems related to child health Demonstrate knowledge of preventive aspects of childhood health problems and to implement them Recognize his limitations concerning management of pediatric patients and the need to consult and cooperate with others to provide optimum care Interact with children and their parents or relatives in a gentle, emphatic and appropriate manner. 2. Briefly describe any plans for developing and improving the course that are being implemented. Description of the knowledge to be acquired By the end of this course the student must be able to pick the following:- Identify normal growth and development during infancy, childhood and adolescence. Define appropriate management for abnormalities affecting growth and development. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of congenital and inherited disease on children and their families. 6 Recognize the indications, contraindications, administration and precautions of the immunizations necessary for infants and children according to the national schedule and the condition of the child. Recognize the most important behavioral and social issues during childhood and adolescence. Describe appropriate measures for health promotion as well as prevention of disease and injury in infants, children and adolescents. Cite the management priorities for different neonatal and pediatric emergencies. Describe the causes and pathogenesis of the most important neonatal and pediatric problems. Describe the clinical symptoms and signs of the most important neonatal and pediatric problems. Identify the appropriate diagnostic tools (and describe how they would be interpreted) and therapeutic lines for the most important neonatal and pediatric problems. ii. 9 F. Facilities Required Indicate requirements for the course including size of classrooms and laboratories (i.e. number of seats in classrooms and laboratories, extent of computer access etc.) 1. Accommodation (Lecture rooms, laboratories, etc.) Lecture room equipped with a black board, overhead projector, computer and internet connection. The room should accommodate 150 students at least. 6 Small group rooms for small sessions (15 students each). 3 mid-size rooms with computer, projector, and black board (30 students each). 2. Computing resources. An easily accessible computer lab for 50 students. 3. Other resources (specify e.g. If specific laboratory equipment is required, list requirements or attach list). We are extremely short of patients beds. We need to collaborate with other facilities. G. Course Evaluation and Improvement Processes 1. Organize workshop on effective teaching methods to enable instructors to improve their teaching skill..
