1 Columbus State Community College Mathematics Department Course and Number: MATH Beginning Algebra I CREDITS: 2 CLASS HOURS PER WEEK: 2 PREREQUISITES: DEV 0115 with a grade of C or higher, MATH 1099(DEV 0115 modules), or placement by COMPASS score DESCRIPTION OF COURSE (AS IT APPEARS IN THE COLLEGE CATALOG): First course of a two-semester sequence. Includes the study of the real number system including properties of real numbers, order of operations, operations on algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable, the rectangular coordinate system, graphs of linear equations in two variables. Includes applications and activities to build skills in problem solving. GOALS OF THE COURSE To improve the student s algebra and problem solving abilities. To prepare students for further study in mathematics. LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Identify and work with real numbers 2. Evaluate and simplify algebraic expressions; solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable 3. Graph equations in two variables 4. Graph linear equations in two variables; write the equation of a line GENERAL EDUCATION GOALS: Course addresses the following Columbus State general education goals: Critical Thinking Quantitative Literacy EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL REQUIRED: Textbook (see below) Graphing calculator (see below) Graph paper TEXTBOOK, MANUALS, REFERENCES, AND OTHER REQUIRED MATERIALS: Elementary & Intermediate Algebra Package Columbus State Community College, 1/e SULLIVAN & STRUVE (ISBN# ) o **This specially packaged edition (1/e) corresponds to the 3 rd edition of the textbook. My Math Lab/Course Compass (included with purchase of a new text). A graphing calculator is REQUIRED. The Texas Instruments' TI-84 (regular, Plus, Silver, etc.) graphing calculator is fully supported and approved for use during proctored assessments.

2 Calculator Alternatives: Some students may prefer to use a CASIO-FX-9750GII, TI-Nspire (non CAS version), or a TI-83. These are less expensive options that are similar to the TI-84, and that are approved for use during proctored assessments. However, note that your instructor will primarily use the TI-84 when teaching, meaning that you will need to learn how to perform any necessary operations using these other calculators without your instructor s help. Other graphing calculators may be permitted. If you own a different calculator, please check with your instructors to see if your calculator will be allowed during their proctored assessments. The TI-89 and TI-92 (or other calculators that perform symbolic manipulations) are never allowed during proctored assessments. Your instructor may require that your graphing calculator s memory be reset (all RAM cleared) prior to each proctored assessment. The Columbus State Bookstore sells both the TI-84 and CASIO-FX-9750GII for your convenience. Additional resources supporting the use of the TI-84 and CASIO-FX- 9750GII may be available at: GENERAL INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Lecture, discussion, demonstration, exploration and discovery exercises with the use of visual aids, graphing calculators, and/or computer resources. ASSESSMENT: Columbus State Community College is committed to assessment (measurement) of student achievement of academic outcomes. This process addresses the issues of what you need to learn in your program of study and if you are learning what you need to learn. The assessment program at Columbus State has four specific and interrelated purposes: (1) to improve student academic achievements; (2) to improve teaching strategies; (3) to document successes and identify opportunities for program improvement; (4) to provide evidence for institutional effectiveness. In class you are assessed and graded on your achievement of the outcomes for this course. You may also be required to participate in broader assessment activities. STANDARDS AND METHODS FOR EVALUATION: 25% of the total course grade must be determined by a comprehensive departmental final exam. 75% of the total course grade is determined by the instructor. Four midterm exams are recommended. Give NO credit for attendance or class participation. Give NO credit for out-of-class assignments that are simply checked for completion, rather than graded for correctness. No more than 25% of the course grade may be determined using non-proctored assessments subject to the following a maximum of 15% graded homework (e.g. MML graded assignments)

3 a maximum of 10% other unproctored and/or collaborative assessments (including but not limited to: in-class group work, take-home assignments, group quizzes, etc.) Eliminate points given for extra credit or limit them to 2% of the total course grade. GRADING SCALE: Letter grades for the course will be awarded using the following scale: > 90% - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 60-69% - D < 60% - E Course grades are NOT to be curved, skewed, or otherwise inflated. SPECIAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS: None UNITS OF INSTRUCTION Unit 1 - Unit of Instruction: The Real Number System Identify the correct subset of real numbers of any given value. Graph real numbers on the number line. Use multiple forms to express sets of real numbers. Use commutative, associative, and distributive properties. Use pencil and paper methods to evaluate numerical expressions requiring order of operations. Use a graphing utility to evaluate numerical expressions requiring order of operations. Use a graphing utility to verify computations obtained using pencil and paper methods. - Assigned Reading: Sections 1.3, 1.6, 1.7 Unit 2 - Unit of Instruction: Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable Evaluate algebraic expressions using pencil and paper methods. Evaluate algebraic expressions using a graphing utility. Identify like terms. Simplify algebraic expressions. Solve linear equations algebraically. Solve linear equations graphically. Evaluate a formula

4 Solve a formula for a specified variable Model problems using formulas Verify solutions of linear equations both by hand and with a graphing utility. Use interval notation. Solve linear inequalities algebraically. Assign variables to unknowns in word problems. Illustrate word problems with diagrams or charts using assigned variables. Translate word problems into algebraic equations or inequalities. Complete the work needed to solve equations or inequalities written for word problems. Interpret the results of word problems. - Assigned Reading: Sections 1.8, Unit 3 - Unit of Instruction: The Coordinate Plane; Overview of Graphing Equations in Two Variables Plot ordered pairs. Determine appropriate window settings on a graphing utility. Determine whether an ordered pair of numbers is a solution to an equation in two variables. Generate ordered pair solutions for equations in two variables. Graph equations by plotting generated ordered pair solutions. Graph equations using a graphing utility. Find x- and y-intercepts of graphs using a graphing utility. - Assigned Reading: Sections Unit 4 - Unit of Instruction: Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables Determine x- and y-intercepts of lines algebraically. Find the slope of a line given different representations. Graph a line given its slope and one point. Graph horizontal and vertical lines. Convert from standard form to slope-intercept form of a line. Use slope-intercept form to find an equation for a line. Write equations for vertical and horizontal lines. - Assigned Reading: Sections

Non-attendance is reported every semester by each instructor, and results in a student being administratively withdrawn from the class section. For the purposes of financial aid reporting, a student meets the participation and attendance criteria if s/he has actively engaged in the class and demonstrated a

6 meaningful attempt toward completion of the course. Examples of active engagement may include, but are not limited to: completing a graded course assignment (e.g., homework, quiz, essay, project, or lab); actively participating in studio or practicum sessions; making content-related contributions to an online discussion forum (including responses both to prompts and to student/instructor posts).
