Also covered will be motivational theories and the relationship between organizations and individuals. ISBN: Course Purpose and Approach The primary goal of this course is to acquaint students of management with the fundamentals of Organizational Behavior as it relates to individual understanding, team processes, and organizational processes. In this course, we will concentrate on issues dealing with human motivation and behavior in organizations, the interface between human behavior and the organization and the organization itself. In order to provide both theory and application, the instructor will use various methodologies, such as lectures, inclass exercises and simulations, quizzes and case studies/readings in the field of Organizational Behavior. This course is intended for students who have already completed a basic course in management. Course Objectives 1. Students will describe foundational terms, concepts, and theories of Organizational Behavior. 2. Students will connect Organizational Behavior theory to everyday life by recognizing that it is evident everywhere. 3. Students will analyze current business practices through interviews with practicing business people.

2 4. Students will analyze business cases/situations applying the relevant theories to practice and hone their presentation skills in the classroom. 5. Students will better understand their own motivational style and philosophy and relate those to behavior in organizations by completing several Self-Assessments. 6. Students will integrate organizational behavior with biblical faith. 7. Students will develop basic management skills in the classroom. Organizational Behavior (MGMT4351) Spring, 2014 Course Requirements * s / Homework Assignment (15% of Grade) Students will be required to complete two homework assignment. Students will be required to select two podcasts from Dave Ramsey s EntreLeadership Series to review at home. Students will then be required to present to the class a summary of the podcast. Students must include: who they heard interviewed, what organization they are a part of, what was the topic and how does it relate to organizational behavior, and three major takeaways from the interview that would be useful to the class going forward. Presentation will be a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes. *Group Project (10% of Grade) Organizational Case Studies Students will get into groups of 3 or 4 people and research one of the following successful organizations: Southwest Airlines San Antonio Spurs Apple Computers Houston Methodist Healthcare System Apple Disney New England Patriots Google Publix REI Goldman Sachs Butler University Basketball Students will be required to present on their findings related to organizational behavior and how these companies and organizations have sustained long term success. Will be graded on presentation and thoroughness of research. All group members must present. *Exams (50% of Grade) Students will take three exams throughout the semester that will count towards 50% of their overall grade in the course. Exams will cover materials in the textbook, as well as materials presented in class from lectures, videos, podcasts, etc. Students must in class on the day of exams. If, for any reason, you cannot be in class on

3 exam day, you must contact me in advance to make arrangements. Otherwise, no makeup exams will be available. *Quizzes (25% of Grade) In class quizzes will be given over outside readings throughout the semester. The only exception is the use of laptops used solely for note taking. * Students are expected to attend each class session, to come to class on time, to be fully prepared to discuss readings and cases, and to participate in a positive way. The success of this course is dependent on student attendance and participation. If any student is consistently absent, the instructor will meet with that student one-on-one to try to correct the absenteeism problem. If the student continues to be frequently absent, then that student s final grade will be affected negatively. Students must attend at least 75% of the time. If the student misses 25% or more of the available periods, the student will fail the course. Both excused and unexcused absences will count towards total absences. * Students are expected to turn in homework assignments at the beginning of the class period when they are due. All assignments are to be typed. Please note that the professor will use your ETBU regularly to communicate important class information. You need to check your ETBU regularly to stay informed. You also need to regularly check Canvas for course-related materials. All incidents related to violations of academic integrity are required to be reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and multiple violations of academic integrity will result in further disciplinary measures which could lead to dismissal from the University. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES A student with a disability may request appropriate accommodations for this course by contacting the Office of Academic Success, Marshall Hall, Room 301, and providing the required documentation. If accommodations are approved by the Disability Accommodations Committee, the Office of Academic Success will notify the student and the student s professor of

5 the approved accommodations. The student must then discuss these accommodations with his or her professor. Students may not ask for accommodations the day of an exam or due date. STUDENT POLICY ON RECORDINGS Personalized audio and/or video recordings of classroom lectures or other academic meetings, events, and presentations must be approved by the faculty member teaching the course. Any recordings are the sole property of East Texas Baptist University and are subject to the provisions of applicable copyright law. Students may not distribute or disseminate these recordings in whole or part through any public or private forum, social media, or the internet. All recordings must be deleted and/or destroyed at the end of the term. Failure to follow those policies may be subject to sanction under this rule. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students enrolled at East Texas Baptist University are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity avoiding all forms of cheating, illicit possession of examinations or examination materials, unwarranted access to instructor s solutions manuals, plagiarism, forgery, collusion and submissions of the same assignment to multiple courses. Students are not allowed to recycle student work without permission of the faculty member teaching the course. Students must ask permission before submitting the work since it will likely be detected by plagiarism detection programs. If the student does not inform the instructor or ask permission before the assignment is due and submitted, the instructor may treat this as an academic integrity offense. CLASS ATTENDANCE East Texas Baptist University is committed to the policy that regular and punctual attendance is essential to successful scholastic achievement. Attendance at all meetings of the course for which a student is registered is expected. To be eligible to earn credit in a course, the student must attend at least 75 percent of all class meetings. For additional information, please refer to page 34 of the Undergraduate Catalog. It is the responsibility of the students to notify the instructor in advance of upcoming Universityapproved absences. Students who accumulate university-approved absences (athletic teams, musical organizations, and other authorized groups) will be allowed to make up work missed as a result of that activity provided that:

6 A. The activity was properly scheduled; B. The absence was authorized in advance; and C. Arrangements were made with their instructors prior to the absence. Such absences are, nonetheless, counted as classes missed. Students who exceed the absence limit in a course before the official withdrawal date will have the opportunity to withdraw from the class. Students in this situation who do not choose to withdraw on or before the official withdrawal date or who exceed the absence limit in a course after the official withdrawal date will receive a grade of XF. COURSE WITHDRAWAL A student may withdraw from a course or courses or from the University beginning with the first day through 75 percent of the semester without academic penalty. The final day to withdraw from this course is Friday, November 10. To withdraw from a course or courses or from the University the student must secure a withdrawal form from the Registrar s Office, his/her advisor, or from the ETBU website, and follow the directions on the form, securing all required signatures. Students must process their own withdrawals. For additional information, please refer to page 28 of the Undergraduate Catalog. GRADUATING SENIORS Graduating seniors will need to complete final exams and turn in all final assignments no later than Tuesday of finals week in order for faculty to upload grades to the registrar by noon on Wednesday of finals week. Graduating seniors should notify their instructor and make appropriate arrangements. Students who fail a course(s) and/or who have not completed their course work or chapel credits before commencement will NOT be allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies. WEAPONS IN CLASS The on-campus possession of firearms, explosives, or fireworks is prohibited with the exception of the transportation and storage of firearms and ammunition by concealed handgun license holders in private vehicles (as described in SB1907) Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by license holder with a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (handgun licensing law, may not enter this property (ETBU) with a concealed handgun. The ETBU President may grant authorization to a qualified and certified full-time faculty or staff member, who is a license holder with a concealed handgun to conceal carry on the University campus, at a University-sponsored event or within or on a University vehicle.
