1 High Intermediate Grammar ESL 216 A B Room: D107 Spring 2018 HIGH INTERMEDIATE GRAMMAR Welcome to Grammar! I am so happy to be your teacher My name is Lynda Nicol. I love to travel and meet new people, and I like backpacking and gardening. Learning languages is also fun for me such as Italian, Japanese and sometimes Chinese. When I study languages, I like to study the grammar because without it we couldn t communicate effectively. But to get really good at a new grammar, you have to practice a lot. The more you practice, the better you get. We will work together. I will explain and help you understand the grammar while you will spend a lot of time practicing it. Do we have a deal? About This Class and Student Learning Objectives This is a 4 unit high intermediate level English grammar class. If you study hard, do all the online homework, read the assignments, ask questions, listen carefully, participate in class activities, turn in your papers on time, and come prepared, by the end of the semester students going from 216 A to 216 B will be able to 1. Demonstrate ability to understand some spoken high intermediate grammar structures. 2. Demonstrate accurate reading comprehension of some high intermediate English grammatical structures. 3. Use some high intermediate English Grammatical structures to accurately and effectively to express ideas at the sentence level. And students going to ESL 217 A (Advanced Grammar) will be able to 1. Demonstrate accurate listening comprehension of high intermediate English grammatical structures. 2. Demonstrate accurate reading comprehension of high intermediate English grammatical structures. 3. Use high intermediate English grammatical structures to accurately and effectively express ideas in sustained written discourse. Ediger and Linda Lee. Oxford University Press. ISBN You need Internet access and ability to use technology to be successful in this class. You will need to access the class blog, online practice and other online components during the semester. You may use the computers on campus in F170 or your own access. However, if your home access is outdated or you can t access these things at home, you will need to be on campus to access these things. 3 ring binder with dividers and lined paper You need access to two dictionaries (online access is preferred) : An English/English dictionary and a English/your language dictionary

2 High Intermediate Grammar ESL 216 A B D 107 S 2018 Grammar is great!!! But only if you practice it correctly many, many times Learning a new language can be challenging, but it can also be fun. In this class, we will study different parts of English grammar. Grammar is essential for good communication, but just learning the rules isn t enough. The grammar of your native language was easy to learn; you didn t have to think about it. However, with a new language you have to think about it. Then the more times you speak it, hear it, see it or write it correctly the more it becomes a part of your thinking. To learn grammar well, you have to do it over and over and over. You must memorize the rule and then use it correctly in speaking, you must listen for it as others talk, you must read it out loud over and over, and you must use it in writing. You have to use not only the new grammar correctly, but also grammar you ve learned before. The only way to get better is to practice. This is why you have lots of homework exercises to do online. The more you do the better you will get. One expert said you have to practice 10,000 hours to be an expert at something. This is the way to make it part of your thinking. This semester we will cover a lot of the textbook and use handouts ask questions analyze grammar and sentences patterns in reading and writing write using grammatical structures and have fun together Figure 1 englishgrammar.com and it will become a part of you Attendance To be a successful student, it is very important to come on time. Class will start at 8:00. Please be ready to begin class. I really like to start class on time. When you come late, you miss important information, and it is very annoying to me. It tells me you do not think the class is important. Good students come on time and to every class. All quizzes will start at 8:00. All homework, to turn in, is due at 8:00. If you cannot make it at 8:00, I suggest you drop the class, and sign up for a later class. I am very strict! Attendance: If you miss six classes, I can drop you. However, I know emergencies can happen. Please contact me as soon as possible. If you miss class, you must go to the class website to see the homework. You are responsible for your homework and getting it finished and turned in on time. Grades Homework, inc. online / in class work 30% Quizzes/Exams 50% Final Exam 20% (not optional: you must take the final to pass the course) A=90-100%, B=80%-89%, C=70%- 79%, D=60%-69%, F=below 60% 4

(The number one way to be successful) Do your online/book homework everyday and turn in your written homework on time! In this way, you will not get behind. o Number of hours of homework a week: The college rule for number of hours of homework is 2 hrs of homework for each unit. This is a 4 unit class; therefore, 4 x 2= 8 hrs of homework per week minimum. o o Grades A Students: Most students who want an A need to study more than 8 hrs a week. Most students who really want to learn English study all the time reading in English, talking in English, thinking in English, etc. etc. Those who want to get better at correcting mistakes must be mindful of your mistakes and be detailed oriented. Make sure your homework that you turn in is neat and easy for the teacher to read. Teachers hate messy work because it takes too much time and teachers don t have a lot of time!! Your work should be double spaced, 12 pt font and 1 margins. You should type your papers. I will not accept handwritten papers except if I tell you. me your homework before midnight. Check your grade online: If you find a problem, talk to me immediately. Keep all graded assignments, so I can check them. Late class/written homework will not be accepted. Go online and see what the homework is. Come prepared. If you miss class, me your homework by midnight on day due. You won t be allowed to participate in the groups if you are not prepared. You will then lose points for class work. Automatic 0 for doing homework in class. Participate in class! Ask questions! Answer questions! Group work when turned in receives participation points. Don t Be Absent! Be respectful and polite to others, turn off cell phones, have a good attitude, try your best Dropping class: it is your responsibility to drop the class if you need to. It is not my responsibility Study for quizzes and exams: There will be short Quizzes and a final. Points are determined based on the number of questions given. Quizzes cannot be made up, but one quiz and one homework assignment will be dropped: the first quiz or HW that you miss will be dropped. NEVER EVER NEVER CHEAT or Plagiarize (copy) never copy from a book, the Internet, or from someone else. Never ask someone else to do your writing for you. Never copy and say you wrote it. Cheating does not help you even though it feels like it. You will receive a 0 for copied work this includes exams/quizzes and group work. Get help when you need it.
