1 University of Manchester Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education Education supervisor Job Description Enquiries about the vacancy, shortlisting and interviews: Paula Higginson, Senior Learning Development Pharmacist Matthew Shaw, Deputy Director CPPE Salary scale: Hours: Band 8a 0.6 FTE x2 0.4FTE x3 Job context: Job purpose: The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE), established in May 1991, has responsibility for provision of continuing professional development for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on the GPhC register providing NHS and Public Health services in England. CPPE is recruiting new education supervisors to support those in foundation practice, general practice and other future settings such as care homes. The CPPE education supervisor will be one of the key support advisors for learners. You will be working alongside clinical mentors, clinical supervisors, work place tutors etc to make sure that your learner gains the support that they need during the training pathway and make progress with their role and education. To do this you will need an appreciation of supporting educational theory, the ability to undertake progress reviews and work with portfolios. The CPPE education supervisor role involves: Supervision for approx. 20 pharmacy professionals (0.4 FTE) or 30 pharmacy professionals (0.6 FTE) Quarterly progress review meetings with the learners by phone or Skype Identification of learners requiring additional support and working with the wider team to provide additional support for these individuals Delivery of events including residential inductions, study days, small group learning sets and webinars Workplace based assessment Assessment marking Programme development including development and review of new learning materials and assessments Working with local sites and local and regional networks to promote CPPE and 1

2 deliver collaborative working You will manage your own time proactively and allocate time flexibly, for example, to co-ordinate with trainee education a particular day of the week may be preferred in a locality. External contacts: Accountable to: Clinical pharmacy professionals, clinical supervisors, Clinical mentors, General practitioners and practice managers, care home staff, health care professionals, Patient participation groups, training venues Regional manager, CPPE Key Duties and Responsibilities Identifying individual learning and development needs and personal development planning Conduct a learning needs analysis with each learner at the start of the 18-month training pathway Support the learner to identify their learning and development needs and to prepare their PDP. Support the learner to select relevant study days and learning opportunities. Supporting Learners Act as a mentor to the learner and encourage them to manage their own development. Support the learner to make a realistic assessment of their achievements and to complete the relevant documentation in their portfolio Encourage the learner to express and discuss ideas and concerns affecting their experience in the workplace Give the learner honest and constructive feedback Identify those requiring additional support and work with them and the wider team to provide additional support Encourage the learner to develop their career portfolio. Monitoring and reviewing progress Undertake quarterly progress reviews with the learner by telephone or Skype. Review the learner s progress throughout the training pathway including role progression, progress with education, engagement with the learning pathway and completion of assessments. Encourage the learner to express their views on their own progress. Support the learner to reflect on their learning and development and assess whether they have achieved their agreed learning outcomes. Give the learner mentoring support and guidance and provide signposting to other support resources and networks if needed. Support the learner to identify new learning and development needs and to update their PDP. 2

3 Make safe, fair, valid and reliable decisions on the progress of the Learner, based on feedback from their clinical supervisor, other staff and patients. Learning events Group the Learners into local learning sets of about ten (range 6 to 12) Facilitate local learning sets and site meetings for Learners Work with the clinical mentor to organise and deliver local learning sets for Case based Discussion assessments. Contribute to the delivery of the induction residential, study days, CPPE core events, internal CPPE training and other events as appropriate. Take responsibility for organising events eg, venue bookings, evaluation of events, working with external speakers Other Participate in programme development including developing new learning programmes, review of learning programmes, piloting new events and providing feedback to programme developers Participate in quarterly Learning and Programme Development meetings Participate in the annual CPPE national meeting, mid-year meeting, team meetings and webinars and regional local action meetings. Collect data for evaluation purposes and report to the management team and Health Education England (HEE) where appropriate Provide peer review for another education supervisor and be peer reviewed yourself annually Complete the CPPE Education recognition scheme Demonstrate that you meet the CPPE core objectives for education supervisors Adhere to CPPE QA processes 3

4 University of Manchester: Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education Person Specification Education supervisor Education / Qualification Previous Experience Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Essential Registered pharmacy professional with the GPhC Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society or APTUK Relevant experience in training healthcare professionals Experience supporting the learning of others in a tutoring role Experience of providing feedback to individuals and groups Able to communicate clearly & effectively verbally & in writing to a wide range of healthcare professionals Able to establish successful team working relationships. Able to demonstrate good working relations with colleagues across multidisciplinary teams and external organisations Able to facilitate learning of mixed groups who have different levels of skills and abilities Able to demonstrate excellent presentation skills to large groups (more than 20 people) Able to demonstrate a high standard of personal discipline and professional behaviour Able to work independently Effective customer service skills able to work to meet the needs of service users at all times Knowledge of the current NHS agenda Effective problem solving skills Able to prioritise own work to meet deadlines Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Able to demonstrate an understanding of equal opportunities and its application to training and development Desirable Relevant advanced underpinning knowledge in Education & Training eg, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent Experience working in general practice, care homes, urgent care or relevant experience working in primary care Experience of planning, designing and organising training sessions Experience of workplace based assessment Able to chair a meeting effectively Able to demonstrate consultation & influencing skills to successfully gain agreement and commitment Able to demonstrate effective management of conflict and handling of complaints Able to respond to urgent and unplanned demands from colleagues and service users while maintaining current workload 4
