This is an introductory course which includes an initial focus on business followed by an overview of management, marketing, finance, quantitative tools used in business and the environment of business. TEXTBOOK: REQUIRED:Introduction to Business, Jeff Madura, 3 rd ed Southwestern College Publishing Co. NOTICE: HONESTY POLICY: The information in this syllabus was, to the best knowledge of the instructor, considered correct and complete when distributed for use at the beginning of the semester. The instructor, however, reserves the right, acting within the policies and procedures of Southwestern Michigan College, to make changes in course content or instructional techniques. Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at SMC. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in the suspension or expulsion from the institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. Additional detail regarding cheating and/or plagiarism may be found elsewhere in this syllabus.
2 METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: EVALUATION: Introduction to Business will require active participation by students in learning to apply principles of business wihin collaborative peer groups in the classroom. Lecture, discussion, written assignments, quizzes and tests will be integral parts of instruction. Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a minimum final grade of 70% as measured by the following assessment criteria. EVALUATION METHOD: Percentage distribution of final grade: Tests 30% Assignments, Quizzes, Attendance/Participation 35% Final Project 25%. Final Exam 10%. Total 100%. GRADING SCALE: The following grading scale is in effect for this course: % = A % = C % = A % = C % = B % = D % = B % = D % = B % = % = C % = F ATTENDANCE POLICY: Because the class meetings are collaborative learning opportunities, punctual attendance and active participation are integral aspects of the course. As is the case in business, unexcused absences, as well as punctuality, are major factors in the work ethic aspect of evaluation in this course. Late assignments will not be accepted. You may utilize the fax and/or as a means of turning in assignments should unpredictable circumstances prevent you from handing in the assignment personally. TESTING POLICY: OTHER COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students will be permitted to miss one exam, otherwise a student s lowest test score will be dropped. There are no make up exams in this class. If you are more han 20 minutes late to class on the day of an exam, that exam will be used as your skip and you will not be permitted to take the test upon entering the classroom. The student is expected to have read the assigned material and completed any written assignments prior to the class meetings as outlined in the
3 Course Assignments following. All written assignments must be typed. In addition to content, the instructor reserves the right to deduct points on written assignments for carelessness and inattention to detail, including grammar and spelling. Each student in responsible for material and assignments in classes missed due to absence. Therefore, it is suggested that the appropriate lecture notes and hand outs be secured from another student who attended the class. Unannounced quizzes will be used to assess mastery of the assigned text. Late starts due to tardiness will not be permitted, nor will there be any make up opportunity. In Class assignments must be done in class and there will not be a make up opportunity. Late Assignments will not accepted. Canceled class: On occasion, classes may be canceled due to inclement weather, instructor illness or some other reason. In such cases, the assigned work for that class will be due for the next regularly scheduled class meeting.
