1 Hello, welcome to the Year 7 homework schedule. Below you can read a brief description of the units that Year 7 students study in English, and also view a schedule of homework that students are expected to complete. Homework is usually set once per week. The tasks below are representative and may vary according to

2 Autumn 1: Me, myself and I At the start of the year all year 7 students are given a reading and writing assessment. They also have a reading and spelling age test. They will be inducted into using the library which is the start of a fortnightly library programme. They also work on a 'Myself' project which involves speaking and writing about themselves. 3 Autumn 2: The novel or short stories Students will read a novel with the class and independently. They will study themes and characters in detail and learn how to develop their ability to analyse the structural features and language used by the author. 4 Spring 1: Exam Preparation and Grammar Skills By this stage in the year students will have an opportunity to build on the skills they studied for their exam in year 6. The focus is on reading skills, technical accuracy and knowledge of grammar. This will then be applied to exams. 5 Spring 2: Discovering media - newspapers The focus of this unit is on newspapers. Students learn about the layout and content of newspapers and the different types of paper such as local, broadsheet and tabloid. They will analyse the features of language used and write their own reports. 6 Summer 1: An Introduction to Shakespeare: Playwright and Performer Performing is an essential part of appreciating Shakespeare's work. Students will produce a group scene and write an essay which explores Shakespeare's dramatic techniques and his creation of characters. 7 Summer 2: Poetry Students will study a range of poetry in this unit appropriate to their ability. They will perform and write poems to include those from different cultures and periods in history.
