4 How to Read the Scripts for the Group-Administered Tests (Listening) This document contains the Test Administrator s Script for the Listening Test practice items. The scripted material includes the text that should be read aloud during test administration and the stage directions to help guide the test administrator. Parts with a white background are meant for the administrator. The administrator should read aloud all text in bold font on white background parts. Do NOT read unbolded text aloud. Small, unbolded text gives the administrator directions, and text in small caps gives instructions for controlling the recording. Parts with a grey background will be played on the recording. Any text with a grey background must NOT be read aloud by the administrator. The practice item scripts are provided only for the administrator s reference. Below is a sample of the script with these points highlighted. Begin reading here. Read all bold text aloud. You should be looking at the page labeled Practice 1 at the top. Look at the big picture. The big picture will help you understand what you hear. Do NOT read this text aloud. All unbolded text serves only as a guide for the test administrator. Instructions for controlling the recording will appear in all caps. All text with a grey background is part of the recording, and must NOT be read aloud by the administrator. Use these parts to follow along with the recording. The track number is displayed to the left of the recorded material for your reference. Now, when I start the recording, you must listen carefully because you will hear everything only one time. First you will hear some directions and then you will answer letter A at the bottom. Put your finger on Letter A to show me that you found it. Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place. If necessary, show students Letter A by holding up the next page of the script and pointing to Letter A. O.K. Now listen carefully to the recording. PRESS PLAY. (TRACK 1) TRACK 1 Practice 1. Look at the big picture. It shows Ms. Miller and her students working in a classroom. Listen to what they say. EXAMPLE Letter A. Female student: Ms. Miller, what time is it? Female teacher: The clock tells you the time. It is eleven o clock. Which picture shows a clock? Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. Test Administrator s Script 6 8 Practice
5 Important Reminders for the Listening Test: During the test, there is no need to pause or stop audio files to allow students to respond. Response time is included in the audio files. Practice the Test Administrator s Script ahead of time. Play each track only one time. Only in the case of a significant interruption should a track be replayed one time. Test Administrator s Script 6 8 Practice 2013 Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. 5
6 6 8 Listening Practice Now you are going to practice taking a listening test. I will pass out your test booklets. Please do not open them until I tell you. Pass out test booklets and pencils. Make sure desks are clear of everything but test materials. Does everyone have a test booklet and a pencil? Pause for response. Does anyone have any questions before we begin? Answer any questions. Now open the cover of the test booklet. You will see the title page. It says, Grades Six Eight, Listening Practice. Is everyone there? Hold up the next page of this script to show this. Make sure all students are now on the correct page. You will listen to people talking on a recording, and then you will fill in the circle that goes with what they say on the recording. Listen carefully because you will hear the recording only one time. Does anyone have any questions before we start the practice? Answer any remaining questions. O.K., now turn the page Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. Test Administrator s Script 6 8 Practice

Now, when I start the recording, you must listen carefully because you will hear everything only one time. First you will hear some directions and then you will answer Letter A at the bottom. Find Letter A. Read the words next to Letter A. Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place. If necessary, show students Letter A by holding up the next page of this script and pointing to Letter A. O.K. Now listen carefully to the recording. PRESS PLAY. (TRACK 1) Practice 1. Look at the big picture. Michael s class is visiting the school library. Listen as the librarian talks to the students. TRACK 1 Letter A. Female teacher: PRESS PAUSE. Class, here in the library, you can read or work on the computer. You can also check out books. Where are the students? Did everyone find the words that answer the question? Pause and then check to make sure everyone found the right answer by pointing to the first option, In a library, on the next page of the script. Now take your pencil and fill in the circle under the words, like this. Hold up and show students the following page of your script. Demonstrate to students how to fill in the circle under the first option in Letter A. Be sure to fill in the circle completely. Cover all the white space inside the circle. Be sure to fill in only one circle for each question. Pause and then point to the first option with the circle filled in to make sure everyone is following. Did everyone fill in the circle under the words In a library? Pause and then make sure students filled in the correct answer. Good. Do you have any questions? Answer any questions. Go to the top of the next page. Now we will practice again Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. Test Administrator s Script 6 8 Practice

If necessary, show students Letter B by using the next page of this script and pointing to Letter B. Now listen to Letter B. PRESS PLAY. (TRACK 2) Letter B. Listen as Michael tells a friend what he did at the library. TRACK 2 Male student: There were four books about my topic. I had to make a pie chart showing how many of the books I checked out. I checked out three of the four books. PRESS PAUSE. Which pie chart shows three out of four pieces shaded? Take your pencil. Fill in the circle under the pie chart that has three out of four pieces shaded. For demonstration purposes only, fill in the circle under the pie chart that shows one out of four as an INCORRECT answer on the next page of this script. Now listen. I want to change my answer. If you need to change an answer during the test, you must erase your first answer completely, like this. Erase the circle and show the class. Then, fill in the circle under the new answer you want to choose. Clearly demonstrate filling in the circle under the pie chart that shows three out of four shaded segments. Did everyone fill in the circle under the pie chart that shows three out of four? Pause to make sure students filled in the correct answer. Good. Does anyone have any questions about how to change an answer? Answer any questions. What are you going to do if you want to change your answer? 14 You should be looking at the page labeled Practice 2 at the top. Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place. This time, you will practice doing Letters A, B, and C with the recording. We will not stop until you finish Letter C. We are doing this so you can practice answering all three questions on your own. Are there any questions before we begin? Answer any questions. O.K., let s begin now. Listen carefully because I will play everything only one time. PRESS PLAY. (TRACKS 4, 5, and 6) Allow each track to play in its entirety. The recording is programmed to allow students 25 seconds to answer the question. Do not advance the track manually. Scan the room to make sure all students are on the correct page and item number. If students are not filling in the circles or seem confused at any point during the Practice, say: Remember, take your pencil and fill in the circle. Practice 2. Now you will do three practice questions on your own. You will have time to answer each question. When the next question is about to start, you will hear this sound [tone plays]. When you hear the sound, make sure that you have an answer filled in. Practice 2. TRACK 4 Mr. Carter asked his class what their favorite subject is. He put that information in a graph.
