Students will analyze ESL texts. Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of English 87, students will be able to: 1. respond to advanced level ESL texts and dictation by analyzing elements of fiction and nonfiction; 2. compose unified, coherent written responses to course texts with minimal errors in Standard English grammar and mechanics. What materials do I need for this class? a. Focus on Vocabulary 1 (REQUIRED) b. 3 What are the rules in this class? 1. Be on time and don t leave early! If you are late, you make it hard for others to stay focused. 2. Don t miss class. Any student who has two absences (late arrivals and early exits will result in absences) may be dropped from the class. 3. Do your work. Homework must be turned in on time. No late work (homework, quizzes, writing) will be accepted. 4. Don t let your cell phones ring or vibrate in class. 5. No cheating or plagiarizing will be tolerated. This behavior results in an automatic zero on the assignment or exam and the incident will be reported to the Dean of Student Services. This includes homework! 6. No disrespectful or threatening behavior will be tolerated! It is important to respect the student and teacher relationship by approaching concerns privately during office hours. 7. Do no harass, bully or threaten other students. 8. We will discuss controversial topics at times. Please make sure you conduct yourself in a mature manner. If you are not comfortable with someone else s opinion, please address them in a respectful way 9. By being in this class, you understand that this class fits into your schedule. What is cheating? o Plagiarism happens when someone takes someone else s ideas and acts like they are his own. It is academic theft. It is wrong to take someone else s ideas and not explain where they come from. Plagiarism is a serious offense. The college has no tolerance for plagiarism, so if it happens, I will enforce these policies. If you are not sure if you are plagiarizing or need more information, please talk to me. You need to educate yourself on how to properly explain others ideas without making them look like they are yours. o Cheating- What is cheating? Cheating is looking at another person s test, talking during the test, looking at notes in your bag, getting the answer from your phone, taking pictures of the test, asking students in other classes what will be on the test, etc It using someone else or something else to help give you an advantage on the test. It is culturally unacceptable to cheat. Pierce College takes education very seriously. This is a 5-unit college level course that will be treated as such. If the workload in this class is too much, this might not be the best fit for you. Please know, I will report any suspicious behavior to the Dean of Student Services. This report will go on your permanent record.

4 How will I be graded? A 90%- 100% B 80%- 89% C 70%- 79% D 60%- 69% F 0 %- 59% Vocabulary Quizzes 20% Writing Assignments 15% Homework + Participation+ Quizzes book, class activities, homework 10% Vocabulary Midterm 15% Writing Midterm 10% Final Writing Exam 15% Final Vocabulary Exam 15% *You will receive printouts with your grade information during the semester, but you can also always ask me via vannorm@piercecollege.edu. No student should be surprised by their final grade. Be proactive! Set up a meeting with me if you are concerned about your grade!! I will not let students keep tests so if you have questions from quizzes or tests, set up a time to meet with me! We can go over the answers together. Each student should be spending 10+ hours each week on their English. If you do not take the time to get tutoring, meet with me, or study on your own, it will be very difficult to pass this class.
