1 What is PARP? Parents As Reading Partners Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in school. PARP is a program that cements the necessary bond between the home and the school to encourage love of reading in our children. PARP is a statewide PTA administered program that asks parents (or caregivers) to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words to even playing word games like Scrabble or Boggle. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills in the child and also strengthens the parent/child relationship. Step out and explore with "CBS's Wild About Reading" with your child in a school-wide reading program as we promote family literacy. Beginning Monday, March 2, your child will receive reading log from his or her teacher to track his or her daily reading "adventure" with fun incentives along the way. On display in the CBS main entrance, we will track the grade with the most complete logs returned, the classes with most complete logs, and the classes with the highest percentage of participants. There will be special rewards for the top reading grade and classes at the end of the four weeks as well as individual prizes awarded for every complete log returned. Logs this year will consist of students recording books of their choosing read for a utes with their parent or guardian. We are not logging independent reading, teacher assigned reading or studying. All students, who read a minimum of 105 minutes a week with a parent or guardian, will receive a weekly prize. Only logs with parent signature signifying that you have read with your child for each night will receive prizes. Reading logs will be collected by your child's classroom teacher every during this four week period. Extra logs can be found on the CBS PTA website. Late logs will only be accepted in cases of absence. Lastly, sign and return our reading contract as a commitment you and your student make to promote family literacy by Wednesday, March 4 th. 7 Week 1 March Ways to Read Aloud with Your Child 1. Pick a chapter book to read as a family throughout the duration of PARP. Always having the next chapter to read is a great way to sustain reading! Siblings can read together! 2. Create a great environment for reading. Make it cozy and inviting. Or make it loud like a theater! 3. Have a special time to read together. 4. Find a topic that's new and learn about it together. 5. Stop reading the book at a suspenseful point so your will be eager for tomorrow s read-aloud time. Looking for your next great read?
