1 City University of Hong Kong Information on a Course offered by School of Creative Media with effect from Semester A in 2012 / 2013 Part I Course Title: 2D Animation I Basic Course Code: SM3145 Course Duration: One Semester (13 weeks) No. of Credit Units: 3 units Level: B3 Medium of Instruction: English Prerequisites: (Course Code and Title) N.A. Precursors: (Course Code and Title) N.A. Equivalent Courses: (Course Code and Title) N.A. Exclusive Courses: (Course Code and Title) N.A. Part II 1. Course Aims: This course aims at providing basic training in the concept of animation, animation methodologies, principles of animation, production process, creative research, documentation (dope sheet, bar chart), and technical know-how in timing & overlapping control, keyframing (Pose-to-Pose animation) and Straight Ahead Action techniques, mainly on the traditional 2D hand-drawn animation basis. Students will also be exploring other traditional animation techniques like Cut-out Animation, Rotoscoping, Pixilation and Stop-motion Animation, which in a way to inspire students thinking towards animation and to acquire broader techniques. Through a series of demonstrations and practices, students will be able to apply the principles of animation and production process to create animated content with correct timing & overlapping, definition of extreme poses (keyframes), action & reaction, force, speed, weight, and walking cycle and to create animated-content using other traditional technique. Furthermore, pre-production and pre-visualization processes like creative research, thumbnail sketching, storyboarding, layout drawing, and animatic (story-reel) technique will also be introduced in this course.

Illustrate and communicate ideas in the form of Creative Research and Pre-production outcomes for animation production 3. Synthesise and communicate ideas visually and aurally in the form of 2D hand-drawn animation, Cut-out animation, Rotoscoping, Pixilation and Stop-motion Animation. 4. Project management and problem-solving; *5. Self-exploration and self-reflection of the subject matter in form of visual daily on scrapbook * Negotiated Learning Outcome (NLO) explicitly articulating the elements of discovery oriented learning. 3. Students should show their cooperation to conduct a well-organized presentation with their own argument and evidence from readings and notes.
