Andralee -Workshop designed around data from Elida s survey, feedback from teachers, and observations in classrooms. -Our focus is on what the students are doing in The Daily 5. For what the teacher s role is, please consider attending the Moonlight University for CAFE. -Take a moment to open a tab with our padlet for today. Post questions, ideas, and group responses there today.

4 Game On! The Daily 5 rounds may be completed at different times throughout the day. Every student should experience Read to Self & Work on Writing every day. Students rotate from one round directly to the next. Andralee -Plickers for True/False/IDK

5 Game On! The length of a Daily 5 round should be approximately minutes. The teacher does not have to work with all students in a small group every day. Student rotation groups should be homogeneous for ease of small group work with the teacher. Andralee -Plickers for True/False/IDK

6 What is The Daily 5? What is the purpose of The Daily 5? Andralee -What is it? Structure, not a curriculum -Purpose: No more creating, revising, and preparing new centers each week. No more hours spent at the copy machine copying worksheets.

8 Five Tasks Andralee Shout out of the 5 tasks

9 And the Answer Is... Students rotate from one round directly to the next. Andralee When a round is completed, use a chime to signal clean up time. Students return to the rug/meeting area for a debrief on how the round went with regards to expectations and goals. Then the teacher moves into the next focus lesson.

10 Structure pg Go to page 14 and 15 in The Daily 5 book Andralee -Focus Lesson: Skill or topic you see the majority of the class needing (e.g. introducing a new CAFE strategy, clarify a common misconception, writing tip) minutes. -Check-Out: With choice, send students off one-by-one or by task, indicate their choice on a check-out sheet, and students state personal goals. With rotations, send groups off with a quick review of the I chart expectations. -Round 1: Duration based on stamina of students. -Clean-Up & Debrief: With the sound of a chime, students begin cleaning up and return to your rug/meeting place. You debrief how the round went with regards to the expected behaviors and personal goals and problem-solve if necessary. -Begin again with the second focus lesson, round 2, and debrief.

12 To Group or Not to Group??? Andralee -ultimately, it s your decision. -Jennifer will talk about the benefits of student choice later -I would encourage you to give choice a chance, especially for those who have been doing The Daily 5 for most of the year. Yes, kinder and first grade teachers that means you :)

13 And the Answer Is... Student rotation groups should be homogeneous for ease of small group work with the teacher. Andralee -The teacher is not a rotation. He/She pulls who is needed for given groups and/or assesment. -If grouping students and assigning tasks, the groups should be heterogeneous. -Teacher groups can be homogeneous. If interested in heterogeneous groups for teacher work time, go to CAFE for Moonlight University!

14 And the Answer Is... The teacher does not have to work with all students in a small group every day. Andralee -Think equity! -Be sure to see all students once-twice a week, but those most in need daily. -Schedule which groups you will see when and one-on-one conferences using a calendar. CAFE book has great tips and tools on how to organize this. Moonlight University!

16 And the Answer Is... The length of a Daily 5 round should be approximately minutes. Andralee -length of a given round is based on student stamina -can be very brief or very long, it s up to the class and the barometer student(s)

17 Barometer Students pg Andralee -First students to break stamina (repeatedly); they dictate the weather of the classroom -Level 1: Did we cover the 10 steps explicitly? Am I staying away or engaging the student(s)? What s my voice level and tone? -Level 2: Practice building stamina at recess for 2-3 minutes, 3-5 days. -Level 3: Fabric square for personal space, sand timers, check books in book box, manipulatives for a mid-round break -Level 4: Sandwich barometer children between other students for conferring (barometer, other, back to barometer)
