2 About the Conference The conference is a wonderful opportunity for all fellows, specifically Academic General and Hospital Medicine Pediatric Fellows and Program Directors from around the country to network, to develop professionally and for fellows to share scholarly interests in research, education, quality improvement or advocacy. The conference is supported and underwritten by the Academic General Pediatric Fellowship Accreditation Committee of the Academic Pediatric Association. Targeted audience: Fellows, Program Directors, Associate Program Directors and other leaders of fellowship training programs. You do NOT have to be affiliated with an APA accredited fellowship training program to attend. The AGP Fellows Conference 2016 is designed to focus on the academic core competency domain of Career Development. This includes opportunities for participants to: 1. Describe how to apply for and successfully secure an academic position. 2. Develop skills in promoting and negotiating one s career to maximize academic outcomes. 3. Describe methods to build productivity skills and minimize procrastination. The AGP Fellow s conference is also designed for AGP program directors, associate program directors and other leadership personnel. Faculty leadership will participate in discussion groups with the fellow participants as well as serve as facilitators for workshops. Additionally, all fellow and faculty members who participate will be able to create an academic network to enhance professional communication, growth, feedback, and advancement in their career. The purpose of the conference is to create a gathering of the national community of generalist fellows and faculty of the APA. We aim to build camaraderie across programs, provide valuable networking opportunities, offer high caliber workshops to potentially supplement local program offerings, and provide a forum in which fellows can share and receive constructive feedback on their scholarly works in progress. There is no registration fee to attend this conference. It brought to you by the APA Academic General Pediatrics Accreditation Committee (AGPAC). All trainees who are fellows within APA accredited training programs will receive a $200 voucher at the meeting to offset the hotel costs of attending the meeting. 4 Session Descriptions Be Your Own Best Advocate: Promoting and Negotiating One s Career in Academic Medicine Paul Darden, MD, Teri Turner, MD, MPH, MEd, and Marybeth Jones, MD Knowing when and how to advocate for oneself is a critical skill in academic medicine. Even if you have a mentor, the best person to speak up for what you want is YOU. Unlike your fellowship program director, once you become a faculty member, there isn t an assigned person whose main priority is ensuring that you figure out where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. This workshop will focus on common workplace negotiations; how to get opportunities, flexibility, buyin, support, and credit for your work. Fellows will actively participate in common workplace negotiation scenarios collected from current fellows and recent graduates and also craft a concise elevator speech that effectively communicates ones accomplishments, skills or projects in a way that excites others. At the end of the session, fellows will leave with resources that will help promote one s career instead of waiting for opportunities to come knocking. Works in Progress Melissa Klein, MD, MEd and Robert Hilliard, FRCPC, MD, EdD This session is specifically designed for Academic General Pediatric (AGP) and Hospital Medicine (HM) fellows to discuss their research and scholarly projects in education, QI, advocacy and/or health service research domains. Fellows will prepare and 10-minute informal presentation to describe their progress to date. To accommodate fellows at all levels, presentations may describe a developing research project idea and aims, or present results of a completed project. Following each presentation there will be 10-minutes of discussion and feedback, facilitated by AGP and HM faculty researchers and educators from across the country. Fellows are asked to submit a brief abstract of their research project by April 1 (see outline for submission on registration page). Fellows who will be presenting a talk at this year s PAS can submit their PAS abstract. The abstracts will provide practical experience for fellows and will allow the program committee to assign the appropriate faculty experts for project discussions. How to Hit the Ground Running as New Faculty Neha Shah, MD, MPH Joyee Vachani, MD, MEd, and Julieana Nichols, MD, MPH A new faculty member is often faced with the challenge of being academically productive with limited time or skills to do so. Prior to attending the workshop, fellows are asked to reflect on barriers they have or expect to have as new faculty. During the workshop, fellows will actively evaluate these themes in three areas time management, mentorship, and networking and participate in activities in order to learn from each other and devise a plan for success. Finally, participants will be given a resource with several tools so they can continue to reflect on these ideas after the workshop and ultimately integrate them into their future career. Panel Discussion: Building Your Academic Career and Preparing for Your Job Interview Lou Bell, MD, Peter Szilagyi, MD. MPH, Daniel Coury, MD, Benard Dreyer, MD,Jimmy Beck, MD, MEd and Lauren Solan, MD, MEd The panelists will engage in an informal open question and answer session that will explore strategies for building his or her academic career. We will then move onto the related topic of preparing for your job interview and the associated negotiations for your first faculty position. The panelists bring a wealth of experience, both from the side of recruiting new faculty and from the side of recently going through the recruitment process and joining the faculty at large Academic Medical Centers. We hope to share our experiences and answer questions related to developing an academic expertise; the strategies and TIMELINE for approaching dual recruitments, how to craft your cover letter, how to organize your job talk, the do s and don ts on your first visit, how to evaluate the academic environment and more.
