IAP2 Certificate Program in Public Participation The International Association of Public Participation s Certificate Program in Public Participation is intended to provide a broad-based learning experience covering all of the foundations of public participation. Developed in consultation with practitioners from around the world, the training provides useful tools for designing and implementing effective public participation programs. These tools are presented in an interactive and experiential learning environment that provides students with the opportunity to explore their own public participation challenges with their instructor and peers. Upon completion of each module, students receive credit from IAP2 recognizing their successful completion of that module. Upon completion of all three modules, students are awarded a Certificate in Pubic Participation from IAP2. IAP2 Professional Development Series Individuals who wish to continue their learning beyond the certificate program and advanced practitioners have the opportunity to take additional IAP2 approved classes. These courses, developed and presented by senior trainers, offer a more in depth look at a variety of skills, specific techniques and methods used in public participation processes. 2 More about the courses Planning for Effective Public Participation Program provides the fundamentals for effective public participation. Using IAP2 s Spectrum for Public Participation, participants will learn how to establish clear and achievable objectives for public participation and how to define a promise to the public. Participants will learn how to prepare their organization for conducting participation and how to plan for the timing, techniques, and resources needed to make public participation a success. Students will also learn about the practical application of IAP2 Core Values of Public Participation, how the IAP2 Code of Ethics applies to both practitioners and clients, and how to employ the IAP2 Foundations of Public Participation in a step-wise approach to plan and design participation programs. Course content includes detailed examples and practical hands-on exercise so participants leave with the tools needed to build realistic participation programs. Course materials include exercises using IAP2 s five steps for planning effective participation. 3 Communications for Effective Public Participation Outstanding communication skills are a basic requirement of all professionals that interface with people. This course reviews basic communication concepts through the lens of participation. It focuses on skills needed to prepare and present information. It also offers tips to address communication challenges commonly faced while conducting participation activities. Course content includes: Communication skills for: o sharing information with people & organizations o collecting and compiling input from participants o bringing people together into productive dialogue Key message framing that encourages authentic participation Listening as an engagement tool Attitude and Behavior perception is someone s reality Introduction to risk communication Moving from dug-in positions to shared interests Dealing with emotional charged situations. At the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe the communication process and what is required for authenticity and effectiveness. Discuss and apply specific communication skills needed at all levels of the IAP2 Spectrum. Describe how to move people from positions to shared interests. Communicate with renewed awareness of performance. 1 Day course Note: The Planning for Effective Public Participation module is a prerequisite for this course. The course is an essential primer for new participation practitioners. Individuals with a communications background will find the course a review with an emphasis on communication within participation programs.

4 Techniques for Effective Public Participation Program in Public Participation provides an introduction to a range of practical tools and techniques used at all five levels of IAP2 s Public Participation Spectrum. It gives course participants an opportunity to try out or observe a number of specific techniques including World Café, Interviews, Samoan Circle, Citizens Jury and Advisory Group. It includes overviews of more than 20 tools and techniques tested and used by public participation practitioners around the globe. The course is designed as a primer and is suitable for beginning to intermediate level practitioners and those who want a review of basic group process techniques. Interactive exercises and practical tips are used to enliven the basic theory and reference materials presented throughout the two-day session and reinforce skills that participants can put to immediate use. Students learn how to create effective forums for dialogue and how to avoid the many problems encountered in traditional public meetings. Students leave this module armed with a detailed student manual. Tipsheets offering practical advice for selecting, using, and evaluating a broad range of participation activities are provided.
