Programme Aims: What will the programme allow you to achieve? 1. It provides a structured introduction to economics. 2. It equips students with an understanding of analytical concepts and ability to apply economic principles. 3. It creates competence in the basic mathematical and statistical methods used by economists. 4. It thus provides students with the knowledge and skills required to progress to postgraduate study in economics. III. Programme Learning Outcomes: What will you learn on the programme? There are four key areas in which you will develop: Learning Outcomes: Knowledge Students should be able to acquire a solid understanding of 1. microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and their application to policy analysis; 2. basic techniques in mathematics and statistics and their uses in economics. These methods include algebraic and non-algebraic functions, solving equations, matrix algebra, calculus, optimisation, descriptive statistics, estimation, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis; 3. a wide range of theoretical, empirical and policy issues relating to either international trade and finance, economic development, or banking and finance. Acquisition of a solid understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, their application to policy analysis, and wide range of issues in either international economics, development economics, or banking and finance through lectures and [1/3]

2 Acquisition of a solid understanding of basic techniques in mathematics and statistics through lectures and tutorials, as well as weekly exercises in mathematics (term 1) and statistics (term 2). Students are required to attend all classes, study extensively on their own and prepare non-assessed coursework regularly and to meet deadlines. Learning Outcomes: Intellectual (thinking) skills Students should be able to 1. think analytically and evaluate empirical evidence; 2. apply relevant theoretical concepts to real world economic issues. Learning Outcomes: Subject-based practical skills Students should be able to acquire the following practical skills: 1. Communicate effectively in writing on topics relating to economics. 2. Retrieve and select information from a variety of English-language sources. 3. Make tutorial presentations on designated topics. 4. Listen to and discuss ideas introduced during 5.
