1 MTH 65 - Introductory Algebra-1 st Term CRN# Spring 2006 LOCATION: ST 227 TIME: MW 11:00 1:20 INSTRUCTOR: Jim Harper Office: Math Office SY ST 104 Phone: (503) x3376 e mail: james.harper@pcc.edu Office hours: MW 1:30 2:30 CREDITS: 4 PREREQUISITE: Math 60 or Math 62 and RD 80 (or ENNL 250) TOPICS: Use applications, formulas, and reasoning skills to write, manipulate, interpret, solve, and graph linear equations. Concepts will be introduced numerically, graphically, and symbolically. TEXT BOOK: Beginning Algebra 4 th Edition K. Elayn Martin Gay TECHNOLOGY:. ATTENDANCE: HOMEWORK: QUIZZES: TESTS: I strongly suggest having a TI 86 or TI 89 graphing calculator for the class. I will be discussing and demonstrating their use throughout the course. You will be required to have a TI 89 for Math 95. The use of graphing calculators has become an important part in math courses. It is essential that you attend all class meetings from the beginning to the end. If you arrive at class after attendance has been taken, notify the instructor before you leave class that same day. Class time will be spent reviewing homework problems, warm-ups, doing group activities, and lectures. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from another classmate and be prepared for the next class. It is essential that you complete your homework before the next class meeting. You will need to have read the textbook and completed the problems to participate effectively in class. Homework assignments are given in the course schedule below. Homework assignments should be turned into the instructor on the day of a test. The use of engineering or graph paper is required for all graphs. Quizzes will be given on most days on material covered since the previous quiz or test. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Quizzes cannot be made up. There will be 4 tests plus the final as indicated in the schedule. The problems will be similar to homework problems and material found in the textbook. No makeup tests will be given. The Final Exam score will be substituted for a test that is missed and excused by the instructor. If you have an emergency must miss a test, you must notify your instructor in advance with an acceptable reason for missing the test.

2 FINAL EXAM: CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES: WRITING ASSIGNMENT: GRADING There will be a comprehensive exam covering all material in the course. If your final exam score exceeds your test average, your final exam will be weighted 15 % higher in determining your final grade (see Grading explanation below). This is work done in class with other students and also includes participation in class discussions and presenting homework problems to the class. There will be one or more writing assignment(s), date and topic is TBD.
