1 MAT122 Scottsdale Community College Spring 2016, 1/19 5/13 Online Class Section Instructor: Dr. Donna Slaughter Office Hours: CM403, M TH, 10-11:30 am. Other times by appointment. Course Description Quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations; graphs of quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations quadratic in form; operations on rational expressions, radical expressions, and complex numbers; rational exponents; applications. Prerequisites To participate in this class, students must have earned a grade of B or better in MAT090, 091, 092 or equivalent, or a satisfactory score on the District Placement Exam. Students may receive credit for only one of the following: MAT120, MAT121, or MAT122. Course Format This course is delivered entirely online, via MathAS. All assignments can be completed on your own, without a proctor, except the final exam. The final must be taken in a proctored environment at SCC, or some other educational institution, or online via ProctorU. Pacing Plan to complete a minimum of one course lesson each week. A schedule of due dates for major assignments is set up for you in MathAS. There are penalties for missing due dates. Getting Started/Orientation Module Your instructor will send initial Getting Started information to you, prior to the start of class, via your SCC address. Completion of the Orientation Module in MathAS is required as part of your enrollment and continuation in the course. Students that do not complete all items in the Orientation Module by the indicated date in the MathAS Calendar may be dropped from the class. Are You in the Correct Class? This class acts as a prerequisite for MAT15x, College Algebra. If your next class is MAT14x, College Math, then you may not need this class. Contact your instructor ASAP if this applies to you. Class Calendar Check MathAS regularly for all class related dates. Is it your responsibility as a student in this course to keep up with class deadlines and assignment due dates. MathAS Website Communication Guidelines For fastest response time, contact me via MathAS messaging. I respond to messages quickly during the day from early morning until around 3 pm. I usually check again around 8 pm. I do check on weekends but usually not until Sunday evening. Use these guidelines to assist you in communication expectations during class. 2 Required Items Intermediate Algebra: Student Workbook (4 th Ed. 2014). Options for access include: 1) Free digital version (links available in MathAS). 2) Purchase through the SCC bookstore (cost <$30) Grading/Assignments ASSIGNMENTS LESSONS % MiniLessons Must complete to 100% 12 Lessons 3 MathAS Account you will set up this (free) account as part of the orientation activities. All assignments and grades are delivered via MathAS. Online HW in MathAS Must complete to 100% 12 Lessons 3 TI calculator (83 or 84 or 84 plus). This is absolutely required. You may be able to search online and find some good deals (at your own risk) or purchase one at an electronics store (Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, etc ). Or, you can try and rent one from SCC in the IT100 building (depending on availability). Regular and reliable access to computer and Internet connection with audio and video capability (either Mac or PC ok). Labs and computer locations on campus may also be used to access your online work (IT100 lab, student center, LC lab, math tutoring center, etc ). You cannot succeed in this class without regular and consistent Internet and computer access. If you do not have such access, you will need to consider other options for taking this class. Class Progress Refer to the Calendar link in MathAS for the assignment submission schedule. Students that fall one week or more behind the Calendar schedule may be withdrawn from the class without warning. Late Passes You are assigned a total of 15 late passes when you enroll in the course. Apply a Late Pass if you believe you will miss a Lesson Quiz deadline (NOT for the midterm or final). Note: Late passes extend the ORIGINAL due date 48 hours. Apply Late Pass before the original due date has passed. Apply a Late Pass by clicking LP link next to the quiz. You may use repeated late passes on a single quiz, however, when you use up your 15 passes, further missed quizzes will be scored at 0. If you fail to apply a Late Pass in time, contact your instructor and to request a 2-day extension (which costs one Late Pass). 3 IF YOU NEED TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM OUT OF TOWN OR STATE Midterm/Final Exam Information The Midterm is taken on your own computer or other location and the Final Exam is a proctored test. Dates are listed in the Calendar in MathAS. MIDTERM EXAM Lessons 1-6/Online in MathAS/Questions similar to Midterm Review 1 hour, 50 minute time limit Calculators can be used Each problem can be worked two times. Second attempts are at 70% maximum score. You must earn at least a 70% to continue in the course. Contact your instructor for retest options if you do not meet this mark. You may retest one time with a maximum recorded score of 70%. In order to qualify to take the MIDTERM EXAM, you must complete all lesson requirements for L1 6 AND the online midterm review to at least 80%, no later than 11:59 pm on the eve of the exam deadline. Any required items not completed by this deadline will earn a score of 0 in the gradebook. Your instructor must approve your access to the midterm exam. See MathAS for more information. FINAL EXAM Covers all the course topics/delivered through MathAS Multiple choice/questions similar to Final Reveiw 1 hour, 50 minute time limit Calculators can be used (TI 83 or 84 only not cell phone apps) Notes/lesson materials cannot be used Each problem can be worked only once. Retests are not allowed. Proctored exam The Final Exam is administered at SCC unless the instructor approves other arrangements. See MathAS for location. Students that do not take the midterm/final tests by the scheduled date and do not contact their instructor in advance may be withdrawn from the class. In order to qualify to take the FINAL EXAM, you must have taken the midterm exam AND completed all lesson requirements for lessons 7-12, prior to taking the final exam. Any required items not completed by this deadline may earn a score of 0 in the gradebook. Your instructor must approve your access to the final exam. See MathAS for more information. If you need to schedule an offsite location to take the Final Exam, you will need to find a college testing center in your local area that will proctor your exam. Find a location, contact them per their services, and then provide your instructor with the following details via (at least two weeks in advance of the test): Name of the Institution Website link for the testing center Name, address, and phone number for a contact person at the testing center Once you have contacted the center AND provided your instructor with the information above, your instructor will work with the center to get them a copy of your test. Failure to schedule far enough in advance may result in you missing the test and being withdrawn from the class. You must take your test in the offsite location by the testing deadline listed on the Calendar in MathAS. Academic Misconduct The current SCC College Catalog has a large section concerning penalties for academic misconduct (a.k.a.cheating. If you are caught cheating, you can be expelled from SCC. All Lesson Quizzes and the Midterm should be done on your own although you may use your notes and workbook during these assessments. For Online HW, you may work together or get help from others but do so judiciously. Remember that YOU are the one who must perform on the final (which counts for a large percentage of your grade) and in your next math class. If you get too much help with assessments along the way, you will not be as well able to stand on your own going forward. Official Course Competencies 1. Use function notation. 2. Solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. 3. Solve equations quadratic in form. 4. Solve rational and radical equations. 5. Perform operations on complex numbers. 6. Perform operations on radical and rational expressions 7. Simplify radical and rational expressions. 8. Simplify expressions involving rational exponents. 9. Graph quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 10. Identify the domain of quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 11. Rewrite logarithmic expressions using the properties of logarithms. 12. Evaluate formulas involving exponential or logarithmic expressions. 13. Model and solve real-world problems using quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic equations. Attendance & Withdrawal Attendance in an online classroom involves consistent and regular progress on the course assignments. This is not a selfpaced class. You must complete assignments regularly and make regular progress or you will be withdrawn. Withdrawal/Drop Failure to complete all activities in the orientation module by the indicated MathAS date may result in being dropped. Students that fall more than one week behind the MathAS Calendar schedule may be withdrawn. Students that fail to take the midterm by the due date may be withdrawn. Students that fail to take the final exam by the course end date may be withdrawn. If you find that you need to withdraw from the course, please speak to your instructor about it first. They may be able to recommend other options or discuss alternative courses of action concerning future classes. 5 How to Complete a Lesson There are 12 lessons in this course. Complete each lesson (in order) as follows: 1. Have your MiniLesson pages from the workbook out in front of you along with a pencil and calculator. 2. Access the appropriate lesson module in MathAS and click the "MiniLesson link. 3. Go through the MiniLesson problems in order. Complete Media Examples by transcribing the information in each Example video. Write out the information EXACTLY as presented even if you already know how to do the problem a different way. These examples are your introduction to the topic and are presented in a very deliberate way. You must WATCH and LISTEN to the videos to get all the information. 4. Work the You Try problems, as they appear after the Media Examples, showing all possible work. The lessons are set up in a very specific order and doing the problems in the order they appear will allow your learning to progress through the given material. Check your You Try Answers in Appendix A of the workbook. 5. Once your MiniLesson is complete to 100%, the link to Online HW will open. Online HW must be completed at 100% to open the Online Quiz link. 6. Complete the Online Quiz. You get two chances per question on the quiz. Second attempts on a problem earn a maximum of 70%. 7. Once you have completed your quiz, move on to the next lesson. How to Succeed in This Course If this is your first online class, you are in for a different kind of learning experience. Students often have the perception that online classes are easier and cover less material. Neither of those ideas is true. In fact, online classes are more difficult due to the lack of structured class time. The biggest reason students drop out of online classes is that they get behind and do not complete the work. This class will challenge you from a time-management standpoint because there are no regular, in-class meetings. So, what can you do to make sure you complete this class with flying colors? The following list should give you some ideas: Make sure you are familiar with the syllabus, calendar and course requirements. Log in to MathAS frequently and keep up with what is going on in class. Set a schedule for yourself that will allow you time to work on the class and complete the assignments. Check with your instructor often if you have questions or need assistance with any of the course topics. Get to know one or more of your classmates if possible and interact with them concerning course related issues. Use the online resources to increase your understanding of the math topics and get help when you need it. Take notes and work all problems on pencil/paper (don t just plug answers into the computer).
