If you don t have a computer at home, you can complete this work using the SCC computer labs or the Math/Science Center. Course Description: Analysis and interpretation of the behavior and nature of functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions; systems of equations, modeling and solving real world problems. Course Objectives: 1. Analyze and interpret the behavior of functions, including end behavior, increasing and decreasing, extrema, asymptotic behavior, and symmetry. 2. Solve polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic equations analytically and graphically. 3. Find real and complex zeros of polynomial functions analytically and graphically. 4. Graph polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions. 5. Determine domain and range of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, power, absolute value, and piecewise-defined functions. 6. Use transformations to graph functions. 7. Perform operations, including compositions, on functions and state the domain of the resulting function. 1

2 8. Determine whether a relation is a function when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 9. Determine whether a function is one-to-one when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 10. Determine the inverse of a relation when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 11. Classify functions by name when represented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 12. Determine regression models from data using appropriate technology and interpret results. 13. Read and interpret quantitative information when presented numerically, analytically, or graphically. 14. Justify and interpret solutions to application problems. 15. Compare alternative solution strategies. 16. Calculate and interpret average rate of change. 17. Model and solve real world problems. 18. Course grading: Ranges: A: , B: 89-80, C: 79-70, D: 69-60, F: below 60 10% of grade: Softchalk Lessons (done online with MATHAS). 10% of grade: homework (done online with MATHAS). 30% of grade: weekly, in-class quizzes. 25% of grade: midterm exam. 25% of grade: comprehensive Final Exam 100% of your total grade. Policy regarding missed work due to absence: Attendance & withdrawal: Regular attendance is essential. You may be withdrawn if you have two absences in a row without keeping in contact with me. If you are sick or unable to attend class, it is absolutely essential that you should let me know by phone or . Regarding your online homework in MathAS: AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Use the instructions on the last two pages of this syllabus to enroll in MATHAS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! You must ACCESS MATHAS several times a week because I will assign new lesson homework and a Mini-Lesson to view and complete each week. HW will remain open throughout the semester but completing it after we have covered that material in class is NOT advisable. Regarding the weekly, in-class quizzes: Weekly in-class quizzes will be given on the in-class work, and Mini-Lessons, and Online HW done outside of class in MATHAS. Each quiz is a BE HERE NOW experience and must be taken on the day and at the time everyone else takes it. No makeup quiz will be allowed FOR ANY REASON! Instead I will drop the lowest two scores at end of course. Regarding the midterm exam: 2

3 The midterm exam is essential to your course grade and is a two-part exam with both segments given in class (see Calendar). If an emergency arises, please call or me on or before the day of the test. A NO CALL/NO SHOW by you on a scheduled test day is grounds for a ZERO grade on that test. Makeups may be given in an emergency but may only be taken within 6 days of day 2 of the midterm. Regarding the Final Exam: The Final Exam is also essential to your course grade. You must take the Final Exam on or before the date this test is scheduled in the course calendar. If an emergency arises, you must me on or before the day of the Final Exam. Your final exam is Tuesday, December 16 from 7:30 am to 9:20 am. Academic honesty: Every student in this class is expected to produce his/her own original work. Plagiarism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism can result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade and further action as discussed below: Academic Misconduct Policy: The classroom is an educational learning environment where students are expected to engage in behaviors which are conducive to their own learning and the learning of their peers. To facilitate this, respect for self and others is mandatory and necessary. Should a student exhibit disruptive behavior and/or use profane language to the extent that it interferes with the learning environment, an academic consequence may be imposed.
