5 Preface The 11th international conference Teaching mathematics: retrospective and perspectives was held on May 6-7, 2010, at Daugavpils University, Latvia. More than 70 educators and mathematicians from 6 countries with a variety of interests and backgrounds participated in the conference. More information about the conference is available at its webpage at This annual conference series started in 1984 in Liepaja, Latvia, as a seminar series for Baltic mathematics education professionals and students. Since 1998 this forum has been organized as annual international conferences. The aim of these conference series is to report and discuss significant recent research, history and activities related to mathematical education. The conference reports were grouped around the following main themes: teaching and learning mathematics research and reports on the content, methods, organisation and quality control of mathematics education, including mathematical, pedagogical, psychological, historical, biographical and other aspects of mathematics teaching. extracurricular activities in mathematics education research and reports on various aspects of students' mathematics contests, mathematical clubs, groupwork, projects and web-based activities. professional and career development of mathematics educators research on various aspects of teacher education, training, professional development and evaluation. technology in mathematics education research of the use of information and communication technology in mathematics teaching and learning. This edition contains selected papers submitted by the participants of the conference. The collection is divided into 3 sections according to the type of papers research, practice and history. All papers have been peer reviewed. We thank the members of the program and organizing committees as well as external reviewiers for their hard work which has produced this volume.
