1 Mrs. S. Estrella s Classroom Rules and Procedures Note from the Teacher The rules and guidelines are set forth between teacher and student to help keep the learning environment safe and productive. The student has a right to an education and be in a safe learning environment. The teacher has a right to teach his/her student to the best of her abilities and also be allowed to do this in a comprising learning environment due to a student s behavior. This is a middle school, students attending should be able to know and understand how to act properly in a school environment. Detention Rules: Before a student gets a detention or a referral the student is given one warning. The teacher should not have to speak to the student more than once. The student is capable enough to understand whether or not his/her behavior at the time is causing a problem. If the student continues with the same behavior this is an automatic detention. If a student gets a second detention, this will automatically have a phone call home. If the student has already received two detentions, then the student will get a referral and a phone call home. Classroom rules: Arrive on time to class-before the bell rings. If you are not inside the classroom when the bell rings, then you are late to class. Being outside of the classroom in the hallway, by the door or holding the door and talking with friends is not considered being on time. No one has permission to hold the door or be playing with the door. Do not arrive late to class without a pass. Do not arrive and place your bag book on top of your desk and walk out to go to the bathroom or drink water and arrive late to class. DO NOT ARRIVE LATE TO CLASS WITH OUT A PASS AND SAY YOU WERE IN THE BATHROOM. IF YOU DO -YOUR BATHROOM/WATER PASS WILL BE TAKEN AWAY OR VOID AND YOU WILL NOT GETS YOUR A s. Please be advised that if you are coming from P.E. it does not mean you can come late to class because you were busy drinking water. You will lose your bathroom/water pass. Do not arrive late from lunch. If a student arrives late to class, the student will be issued a detention. Please note that students not serving detention will affect their conduct grade. 1 st Tardy: The teacher issues a verbal warning. 2 nd Tardy: Student is issued a detention. 3 rd Tardy: Parent contact is made either written or verbally and a 2 nd detention will be issued. 4 th Tardy: The student receives an administrative referral. When a student arrives to class he/she should go directly to his/her seat, sit quietly and be ready for teacher s instructions. Students should NOT run around in the class room or be out of his/her seat talking with friends. This behavior causes a delay in getting the class started and ready. It also cuts into class time. If students continue to display this behavior then the teacher will start to take time away from students after the bell rings and there will be no late passes. Students must understand this type of behavior will not be tolerated at any time and a detention or referral will be issued accordingly. Talking or communicating with other students should only happen under the direct instruction of the teacher. Students should not have an outburst in class. An outburst is when a student or students decided to make a loud comment or express verbal feelings about a situation in class. This includes laughing, giggling, calling out in class or make noises with their mouth or other body parts. Students should be sitting quietly and ready for teacher s instructions. If a student wants to participate in a class discussion when a teacher asks a question, then the student should raise his/her hand. Students

2 should not call out answers even if they are right or wrong. Yawning loudly is very rude and disrespectful. Students should not argue with the teacher or with other students in class. Arguing with the teacher is not allowed it is very disrespectful and will not be tolerated. There is a time and a place to discuss any problem that may arise. If there is a problem make sure you discuss it with the teacher in a respectful manner in order to prevent any further problems. Talking in class causes classroom disruption, delayed learning instruction or progress. Whistling or making strange noises is not allowed. It causes students to not pay attention and it becomes a distraction among other students. Students should also understand there is no talking while doing any classwork assignments. Students must understand this type of behavior will not be tolerated at any time and a detention or referral will be issued accordingly. Assigned Seats Each student is given an assigned seat. Students should be seated quietly in their assigned seat ready for instruction from the beginning of class until the end of class. Students should seat properly with both feet flat on the floor facing the front of the classroom. No student is allowed to sit to the side or backwards. Students are not allowed to sit stretched out in their assigned seat. Students are not allowed to get out of his/her seat and wonder around the classroom unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Do not get out of your seat and then sit in the wrong seat. DO NOT SIT or CRAWL ON THE FLOOR! Do not jump or stand on chairs or desk. The student will be issued a detention if he/she is not sitting properly or sitting in the wrong seat without permission. Respecting other student s space make sure you keep all body parts to yourself. Keep from physically trying to bother or hurting another student. This includes verbally hurting someone or using classroom items, school supplies or classroom furniture. Try to keep your hands and feet off the desk or chair that is not assigned to you. Do not try to push or pull the desk or chair that is not assigned to you. Students must understand this type of behavior will not be tolerated at any time and a detention or referral will be issued accordingly. Respecting other students and your teacher students are not allowed to interrupt, call out, laugh, giggle or make any unnecessary comments. Students are not to yell out in class to other students to shut up! or be quiet! The teacher is responsible for taking care of any student s outburst NOT YOU!! If you volunteer when you know you don t have any permission to do so, then you will get a detention automatically. Students are not allowed to make comments or interact with students that walk into the classroom to deliver messages or speak to the teacher. Anyone breaking this rule will receive a detention or referral accordingly. Book bags should be on the floor by a student s side or feet. Book bags should not be on any student s body or lap. Book bags stay in the classroom at all times even if a student needs to leave the classroom. This includes leaving for fire drills, bathroom, lunchtime or any place else. The only times books bags are taken is when a student is leaving and not planning to return to class. Students are not allowed to play with their book bags or constantly taking things in and out. If a student refuses to put their book bag away properly the student will be issued a detention. Running, chasing, hiding or taking another student s book bag will result in an automatic detention. Headphones, cell phones listening to music or playing with any electric devices will not be allowed. It should not be turned on or used in class. Student should not have these thing visibly displayed on their body, playing with it or listening to it. These things should be put away and turned off. If a student is caught with any electric devices, the teacher will take it away and a detention will be issued to the student. If any electric devices are taken away from the student, then a parent/guardian will have to stop by the main office and pick it up. It does not matter if the electric device was turned on or off. If a student refuses to hand over the electric device because it has become a distraction in class then the teacher will write up a referral and school security might be called to escort the student out of the classroom. An appropriate book, magazine or reading material must be available and present for the student to read in class just in case classwork assignments are finished early. Students are not allowed to get out of his/her seat or talk in class when finished with his/her classwork assignment. The teacher will be randomly checking if the student has his/her reading material for a grade. This reading material can be an appropriate book, novel, magazine or comic book. Students caught without reading material might get a detention and a grade for not being prepared for class depending on the situation at the time. Please note that students are NOT ALLOWED to come to the teacher or another student at any time during the day whether in the classroom, between classes or hallway to ask if you can borrow a book for another class. The answer will be no and the teacher will notify the other teacher immediately. Hoodies, sunglasses or any inappropriate attire should not be worn in class. Please make sure it is properly put away. If this becomes a problem for the teacher or causes any classroom disruption, the student will receive a detention.

3 Bathroom/Drinking Water students will be issued a bathroom/water pass. The student may use it for the bathroom or drink water. YOU CAN NOT USE THE BATHROOM/WATER PASS WHILE THE TEACHER IS GIVING INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS OR DURING A LESSON. Each student will receive a bathroom/water pass once each semester or each nine weeks. The pass is completely the student s responsibility. If the student does not use it and is ready to hand it in at the end of each semester or nine weeks, the student will receive a grade. If the student loses the pass whether they use it or not the student will not get a grade. DO NOT ARRIVE LATE TO CLASS WITH OUT A PASS AND SAY YOU WERE IN THE BATHROOM. IF YOU DO YOUR BATHROOM/WATER PASS WILL BE TAKEN AWAY OR VOID AND YOU WILL NOT GETS YOUR A s. Inappropriate language or subject being discussed in class is completely unacceptable, whether it is said in the English language or a student s native language. This type of inappropriate behavior will be dealt with accordingly and a detention will be issued to the student or students present at the time. Uniform attire students are to be in complete uniform attire and in their school colors. Students should be wearing their polo shirt, black or khaki pants and proper shoes. No house slippers, open toe shoes or sandals. Student should keep their shoes and pole shirts on at all times. Students are not allowed to take off their shoes, exchange or trade shoes in class. Please make sure if you bring extra clothes or shoes to school it is put properly away inside your book bag or plastic bag. If this becomes a problem and a classroom disruption the student will be issued a detention. Grooming yourselves make sure you do not groom yourself in the classroom. This includes combing your hair or combing someone else s hair. Reframe from using makeup of any kind or using a mirror. Using body lotion, any kind of perfumes or body spays. Please be aware there are some students that maybe allergic, have asthma or become sick due to certain types of smells. This type of behavior will result in having your items taken away and a detention. If a student refuses to hand over the item or items because it has become a distraction in class then the teacher will write up a referral and school security might be called to escort the student out of class. Food, drinks, snacks or candy of any kind are not to be eaten or shared in class. The food will be taken away and a detention issued. Other Teacher s classwork, homework assignments or projects will not be allowed to be done during this class time. If the teacher catches any student doing work or copying someone else s work during this class time. The teacher will take away all paper work assignments rip it up and trash it. This also includes work being copied from another student. The teacher will inform the other teacher and issue a detention to the student or both students if they are present in class at the time. The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher does. The teacher is the only person that will instruct students when to get up and be dismissed or put any classwork materials away. Students causing a classroom disruption can result in being delayed to their next class or receive a detention for being disrespectful. Sleeping in Class is not allowed. This is a Language Arts class. In this class students will be exposed to reading, listening and writing. While reading a story, students should be listening and paying attention in order to improve their language skills, vocabulary and have a better understanding of the content being discussed. This is to help you become a better student. If you are caught sleeping or not properly paying attention in class, it will result in a detention and a phone call home automatically. Tapping on the desk - make sure you do not make any banging, tapping or clicking noises with your hands or feet. Please make sure you are not playing with any unnecessary items on your desk. This is very distracting and unnecessary. A detention will be issued accordingly. The Pencil Sharpener is to be use before the class bell rings. Do not get out of your seat to sharpen your pencil while the teacher is speaking, teaching a lesson or giving directions. Students should be paying attention and listening at all times. There is only one person at a time at the pencil sharpener. This behavior is very distracting and unnecessary. If this becomes a problem a detention will be issued accordingly.

4 Announcements over the P.A. can be made anytime though out the day. All announcements are important and students should be carefully listening. These are important message that are address to both students and teachers from the administration. Students are NOT ALLOWED to be talking, laughing, giggling or calling out at any time during announcements. If you have any question make sure you wait until announcements are finished to ask your teacher. If this becomes a problem a detention will be issued accordingly. Damaging, destroying or writing on school property is not allowed. This includes school materials, textbooks, desks, walls, classroom posters or any kind of school furniture. A detention or referral will be issued accordingly especially if the teacher catches or see you doing it. Projects, Presentations, homework or special assignments students are responsible for handing in these assignments on time. If a student is absent the day a project, presentation, homework or special assignment is due, the student must be ready to present and hand it in the following day. A student being absent does not guaranteed an extra few days or weeks to do the assignment. It will be due the next time the student is present at school. NO EXCEPTION Please note an absent note excuses a student from being absent from school not being absent from doing school work. If a student is absent, please be aware it is every student s responsibility to check and ask the teacher if any project, presentations, homework or special assignments have been given out when returning back to school. If you are not in school or in class when projects, presentations, homework or special assignments are due because you were in CSI or suspended then you will automatically get a zero. Please keep this in mind when you decide to get yourself into trouble. No make-up work will be given. Assigned class room jobs/responsibilities the teacher will assign certain task or class room job to students. Only these students are allowed to take on these responsibilities. If a student is absent the teacher will assigned someone to cover for any students absent. No one else is allowed to volunteer themselves without permission. If you ask the teacher any questions that is not referring to a teacher s lesson or discussion and the teacher s response is NO, then the answer will remain NO. DO NOT ASK WHY!! The teacher does not have to explain or give any reasons for his/her response. Do not get up out of your seat every now and then to ask the teacher the same question. If you do the teacher will issue the student a detention for classroom disruption. NO one is allowed to go to the office to make phone calls or talk to anyone from the office without permission. If you want to speak to a school official or the school counselors in the main office, it will require an appointment. If you need to speak to these people please make an appointment on your own time, not during this class time. Your own time is before or after school. You may not leave to see them unless you have a pass or they sent for you to go downstairs. This is school policy. Being prepared for class -it is the student s responsibility to be prepared for class. Student must have a pen or pencil to use in class, proper reading material and paper. The teacher is not responsible for supplying students with these simple materials that can be obtain at any supermarket, dollar store or pharmacy. If a student is not prepared for class then the student might not be able to complete the assignment. The student will receive a zero for any missing or incomplete assignments. Students are not allowed to shout or get out of his/her seat at any time to walk around and ask students to give them any kind of needed supplies. This type of behavior is unnecessary and the student will receive a detention for classroom disruption and a zero for not completing any classwork assignment at the time. Hangings around the doorway/hallway - do not stop by to visit and say hello. Do not walk by and tap or wave through the glass window or door. This is very rude, distracting and unnecessary. Your teacher will be notified of your actions and a detention will be issued accordingly. Mrs. Estrella has read and reviewed the classroom rules and procedures in class with me. 7 The Pencil Sharpener Rules: This pencil sharpener is to be use before the class bell rings. Do not get out of your seat to sharpen your pencil while the teacher is speaking, teaching a lesson or giving directions. Students should be paying attention and listening at all times. There is only one person at a time at the pencil sharpener. This behavior is very distracting and unnecessary. If this becomes a problem a detention will be issued accordingly. DO NOT TOUCH THE AIR CONDITIONING SWITCH!!! If you are caught touching the A/C switch without permission, you will receive a detention!! No exceptions!! Welcome to Mrs. Estrella s Language Arts Class Before you enter make sure you. Are not late to class or make sure you have a late pass. Are in full uniform and pull up your pants gentlemen. DO NOT bring or have any food, drinks, snacks or candy. Be ready to sit quietly, listen and learn something new.
