2 1 Course Description This course is designed to give you information and tools to help you be a successful college student. The class topics focus on self-assessment, goalsetting, effective study habits, and educational planning. Additional topics include campus resources, academic honesty, career development, the use of online tools to aid in academic success, learning strategies, health and wellness, financial literacy, and academic rigor. Contacting the Professor If you have a question, first check the syllabus to see if it covers the information you need. If it does not, feel free to visit me during office hours or make an appointment to see me, send me an message, or leave me a voic at (253) Ext I prefer Canvas messages. Your classmates can also be a resource for answers to questions. I will do my best to respond to your messages as soon as possible, but my formal timeline is to respond to students within 48 hours during business days (Monday through Friday on days when the college is open). In your or voic message, be as detailed as possible. State your name, the class name and schedule, and your question or comment. If you are contacting me to set up an appointment outside of my scheduled office hours, include the days and hours you can be available.

3 2 Contacting your professors is a great way to practice professional communication skills. Be sure your message has a greeting, detailed information about the course and your question. Include the name of the assignment and the due date. Use correct grammar and spelling, and include your name and contact information. Here's a template to follow Hi, Dr. Brewer, This is <Your Full Name>from your College 110 class. I have a question about the Evidence and Interpretation Log that s due this Wednesday. I do not fully understand what to write in the right-hand column and would like to schedule a time to meet with you. 4 3 Course Outcomes During this course, students will 1. Continually assess individual strengths, skills, characteristics and interests in order to pursue personal, academic and career goals. 2. Identify and use college resources and services in order to aid in personal and academic success. 3. Utilize study skills in order to comprehend, retain, and apply class content. 4. Demonstrate productive self-monitoring habits in order to make sound decisions about personal, career, and academic choices. 5. Engage with peers, instructors, and college community in order to build culturally diverse relationships that foster personal, academic, and career success. 6. Apply their understanding of the rigorous expectations of college in order to achieve success as a student. Core Ability Outcomes: Responsibility Pierce College has identified five core ability outcomes that graduates should possess in order to thrive in and enrich our world: critical, creative, and reflective thinking; responsibility; information competency; effective communication; and multiculturalism. In this class, we will focus on responsibility and information competency. We will be looking at the definitions of these core abilities throughout the course.

5 4 Accommodations Your experience in this class is important to me and it is the policy and practice of Pierce College to create inclusive and accessible learning environments consistent with federal and state law. If you have already established accommodations with the ADS manager, please bring your approved accommodations (green sheet) to me at your earliest convenience so we can discuss your needs in this course. Academic Dishonesty In this course, academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for the assignment and/or the quarter. Direct copying is prohibited unless accompanied by a citation in APA format. Incorrect citation and referencing will result in a loss of points. Students are expected to be honest and forthright in their academic endeavors. Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication or other forms of

6 5 academic dishonesty corrupt the learning process and threaten the educational environment for all students. Using any resource during a quiz or exam other than the knowledge in your head or your textbook is considered academic dishonesty. This includes Googling quiz questions and any other form of internet help. The complete Administrative Procedure for Academic Dishonesty is available on the Pierce website at: You each have a voice and while borrowing from others is appropriate at times with proper credit given, I want to hear your voice and what you have to say about psychology. Plagiarism in any form absolutely will not be tolerated. Assignments & Late Work Written homework and in-class activities should be turned in at the start of class on the due date. Handwritten assignments should be completed in blue or black ink. All typed assignments should be completed in Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx) and submitted through Canvas, our online learning management system, by the time specified on the due date. File formats that cannot be opened will be considered missing work. Late work is not accepted in this class. There is no extra credit in this course and no make-up assignments are offered.

7 6 Typed Papers Formatting Information Typed assignments must be completed and submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx) in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Create a header in the upper right-hand corner with your last name that numbers all of the pages consecutively. The first page should include a doublespaced header at the top left with your name, instructor, the course/item, and the date. The title of your paper should indicate the name of assignment and it should be centered on the page. See example: Your Last Name and Page # Your First & Last Name Dr. Mark Brewer College 110, Item # <your class number> Month Day, Year Assignment Name Papers should be double-spaced and typed in 12-point Times New Roman font. Your name and related information should only appear on the first page in the upper lefthand corner. Create a header with your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner. Pages should have 1-inch margins on the top, bottom, and both sides. Start papers well in advance of the due date and take time to proofread your work.

8 7 Safety & Emergencies In the event of an emergency, call 911 and then Campus Safety. Save both of these numbers in your cell phone: (253) Puyallup (PY) Safety, (253) Ft. Steilacoom (FS) Safety. In the event of inclement weather, check the Pierce College website, local news/radio reports, or call (253) (PY), (253) (FS) for a recorded message about whether or not campus is open. If you are unable to attend class, you are responsible for any material that you miss. If you know in advance that you will miss class, please do me the courtesy of sending me an or Canvas message ahead of time. When you have to miss class, I recommend identifying a partner who can share notes with you. Keep in mind that due to the nature of our course activities, some in-class work cannot be made up. If I am unable to attend class due to my own emergency or illness, I will do my best to send a message to the entire class in advance and a sign will be posted on our classroom door. A Note About Canvas (Online Classroom) This class is a hybrid. This means the assignments and materials are available on Canvas, the Pierce College learning management system. You will also be submitting the majority of your assignments online through Canvas, and you will receive feedback and be able to check your grades there. If you do not have reliable internet access or Microsoft Word at home, there are computers located in the library and computer lab for you to use for no cost.

9 8 You can access Canvas from the Pierce College website ( Click on Shortcuts, then ecampus/canvas Login. Under the Modules tab on the left side of the page, you will find directions and due dates for assignments. You will also find information about assigned readings or tasks that need to be completed prior to class. Required Material Blue or Black Pens, Pencils* Notebook paper for note taking* Folder or 3-ring binder -for organizing handouts and related materials* 3x5 cards -for in class activities and assignments* Access to Microsoft Word, Canvas, the Internet, and a printer -available on campus There is no text book requirement for this class You are expected to bring the items marked with asterisks (*) to class every day. Please note: There is no required textbook for this course.

10 9 Evaluation Criteria & Grading Standards Your grade will be determined by the scale below and will be visible in the Canvas classroom by clicking the grade tab. You can see individual assignment grades as well as your overall class grade at any given time. A % A- <94 90% B+ <90 87% B <87 84% B- <84 80% C+ <80 77% C <77 74% C- <74 70% D+ <70 67% D <67 65% F <65 0% Your grade will be based upon your attendance, participation (e.g., completing in-class notecard activities, journals, worksheets, and positively contributing to group discussions) and completed homework. Attendance is mandatory as excessive absence disrupts the learning process. Coming to class late and/or leaving early will result in a loss of attendance points for that class period. Ten points will be added to your attendance score at the end of the term to accommodate one free absence day. I will use the point/percentage table above to calculate the grade you earn. You are expected to pay attention to the scores and feedback posted in Canvas so that you can keep track of your progress in the course. If you have questions about any of the feedback I provide, visit me during office hours.

11 10 A Note About Final Grades I do not give Incomplete or No Credit grades. If you are having difficulty meeting class requirements, get in contact with me as soon as possible so we can discuss your options. If you do need to drop out of the class, do this officially. If your name is on my roster at the end of the quarter, I have to assign a grade to you. A passing grade in COLLG 110 is a 2.0. Students who do not pass COLLG 110 are required to re-take the class during the next quarter that they are enrolled. An administrative block will be placed on the student s record to ensure the student re-takes the course. This policy is available on page 15 in the Pierce College Catalog at Classroom Visitors Please do not invite friends or family to sit in with you during class. Nonregistered visitors will not be allowed in the classroom during the class period. If you have young children and are not able to arrange childcare during class time, you will need to miss class until arrangement for care have been made. Please do not bring animals into class unless registered as a service animal and you have appropriate documentation on hand. Classroom Etiquette You do not have to ask permission to leave the classroom during the class period but please limit disruptions by using the restroom before class and otherwise preparing yourself to stay in the room the entire class time. Please do not work on homework from other classes during my class period. Remove

12 11 headphones/earbuds as you enter class and keep them removed for the duration of the class. Electronic Devices Cell phones must be silenced and stored upon entering the classroom. Do NOT leave your cell phone on the desk during class. Those using cellphones for any purpose including but not limited to talking, texting, or taking pictures of slides will be asked to leave the class for the remainder of that class period. You will then lose the participation points for that day. You may return to class at the next scheduled meeting. Using a cellphone during an examination will result in a failing grade for that assessment. The use of notebook computers or tablets in the classroom is not allowed without prior approval. Office Hours I am available daily by at cmbrewer@pierce.ctc.edu. I check this often though I will never be more than twenty-four hours in responding to your during the normal school term. As this class is web enhanced, we will have a virtual classroom in the Canvas Learning Management System as well as our classroom on campus and messaging me through that system will result in the quickest response. You may also leave a message for me at (253) Ext If you would like a face-to-face meeting, message me in Canvas and we can set up a time. My office hours for winter term are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30pm 3:30pm. Please let me know if you need to see me as I may be elsewhere on campus. My office location is CAS349.
