7 Prelecture assignments (short!) When? : due a half hour before class (9:00 or 10:30 am Tu/Th) Where?: assigned online on Mastering Physics at least two days before due date Due dates and links on Assignments calendar on class website How?: Read the assigned chapters before lecture, and then answer the short set of online questions. Should take you 10 minutes or less to complete the assignment. Why?: to test understanding of reading and prepare you to answer clicker questions and work in small groups Physics 211 Spring 2014 Lecture Homework assignment When?: Due Friday in your recitation section (within first 5 minutes) Where?: Assigned online on Mastering Physics at least one week before due date How?: Two different ways (a) on paper and (b) online (a) One exam-style problem each week, turned in on paper during recitation Graded for partial credit and completeness (b) Problem set online in Mastering Physics Gives you immediate feedback on all problems Googling the answer is cheating, but more importantly, STUPID Why?: Practice and understand how to do problems helps you learn and get ready for exams Solutions to select problems posted online after due date No late homework will be accepted Physics 211 Spring 2014 Lecture

8 Self-assessment quiz (very short) When? : due weekly on Fridays at 5 pm Where?: you will receive an every week with a link to the quiz fill it out online How?: Answer the same set of questions every week about the amount of time you spent studying, what you learned, what the instructor did right and wrong. 12 The Particle Model Often motion of the object as a whole is not influenced by details of the object s size and shape. We only need to keep track of a single point on the object. So we can treat the object as if all its mass were concentrated into a single point. A mass at a single point in space is called a particle. Particles have no size, no shape and no top, bottom, front or back. Below is a motion diagram of a car stopping, using the particle model.
