At the end of the semester we will be using portions of the text Intermediate Algebra, by James Sousa. It is vital that you log in and do work on the site several times a week. Calculator: A basic scientific calculator such as the TI 30Xa, Sharp EL-WBBK, or HP SmartCalc 300s. Any of these calculators should cost less than $ Please note: No graphing calculators (such as TI 83, 8, 8, 2) are allowed on exams. No cell phone calculators are allowed on exams. NO EXCEPTIONS. CONTENT PREREQUISITE This course is an introduction to the techniques and reasoning of algebra, including linear equations and inequalities, development and use of formulas, algebraic expressions, systems of equations, graphs and introduction to quadratic equations. Note 1: Students can find the material of Math-00 challenging. In order to be successful at this course, I highly recommend that you have recently successfully completed a pre-algebra course AND that you have at least hours per week to dedicate to studying for this class. Please think carefully whether you have the time to take this class - your success depends on it! Note 2: This course is offered in a Self-paced format Math-00SP. 2 ISSA STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES HOMEWORK DISCUSSION BOARD GRADING Informed Student Self-Assessment ( is the DVC assessment process for courses numbered Math 0 and below. If you have not reviewed Elementary algebra concepts recently, you may want to take the Self- Assessment to see if Math-075 or Math-075SP would be a better fit for you. Apply the basic concepts of algebra to solve elementary algebraic equations and inequalities in one variable. Apply algebraic methods in the solution of quantitative problems arising in vocations, engineering, science and other aspects of daily life. Use symbols and make generalizations. Use literal numbers and algebraic equations to formulate and solve problems. Determine and use formulas and other equations and inequalities, graphs, tables, and applications. Apply the fundamental principles of algebra to the manipulation of algebraic expressions. MyOpenMath homework: Online homework on MyOpenMath will be due on a regular basis. Homework will consist of reading, watching videos, and computational exercises. There are weekly required discussion board postings; posting on the discussion board will be a small part of your overall grade. Research has shown that students who are active on the discussion board in online classes are more likely to succeed in the course. Your grade will be based on the following percentages: board postings (weekly) 2% Homework on MyOpenMath (3x weekly) 10% Online Tests on MyOpen Math (2) 8% In-class Tests (3) 55%* In-class Cumulative Final Exam 25%* Final grades will be assigned as follows: 0-100% - A; 80-8% - B; 70-7% - C; 0-% - D; less than 0% - F. Borderline grades will be at my discretion. * If your final exam score is higher than your in-class test average, the final will count for 35%, and the in-class test average 5%; otherwise, the final will count for 25% and the in-class test average 55%. TESTS Monthly: Final Exam: Makeups/ late work: Wednesdays: /1, 10/, 11/. Content and review topics will be posted in advance of the tests. Wednesday /7. It must be taken at the scheduled time, and is cumulative. - Late homework policy: You may have up to 8 late homework passes for the semester; there will be a 2% reduction on your overall homework score for each late assignment. No late assignments will be accepted on or after the test on that material; all homework exercises must be submitted before the exam on that material, or earn no credit. - Late discussion board policy: There are no makeups allowed. - Online test policy: You may makeup/retake one of your online tests at the end of the semester. - In-class test policy: There will be no makeups on in-class tests. Your lowest inclass test score will be replaced with your final exam score, if your final exam score is higher. A missed in-class test counts as your lowest test score. 3 OTHER POLICIES/ REMARKS Testing conditions: No calculators on exams other than a scientific calculator that computes logarithms and exponents. (e.g. no TI 83, 8, 8, etc., or equivalent). No smart phones, PDAs or dictionaries (electronic or otherwise) allowed during exams. No notes on exams. Testing security: I will be checking IDs at each of the exams. Bring your ID with you! Participation: To be successful at online courses, you need to log on and do work at least several times weekly. I will be checking to see that you are logging on regularly; you should spend at least hours per week on the course. Extra Credit: There will be extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Absences and making up assigned work for DVC athletes and school-related events, and religious holidays: Please notify me at least one week in advance of any absence due to religious holidays, athletic or other school-related events. You are responsible for making up any missed assignments within one week of the absence. MATH LAB ACADEMIC INTEGRITY EOPS students: Please introduce yourself to me. I understand you are required to complete an EOPS Progress Report mid-semester, or after the first test is completed. 4 SOLUTIONS MANUALS, ONLINE HELP, etc. It is very easy to get into the habit of relying on the solution manual (or the help features on the MyOpenMath website) to walk you through the solutions to your homework and then find that on exams you do not know what to do next! It is a much better idea to form a study group, exchange phone numbers with classmates, or get help from the Math Lab or myself if you are unsure how to proceed in solving one of the homework exercises. The math lab and the library have group study rooms for students to use take advantage of this!
