1 BUILDING CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS THAT INTEGRATE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING June 11-13, 2018 Minneapolis, MN

2 Redefine the value of college beyond getting a degree. OVERVIEW Join us for an in-depth training on how you can build co-curricular programs that teach critical work and life skills to students before they enter the workforce. During this three-day event, you will work through how to: Resource, coordinate, and structure these programs on your campus Connect your curriculum with both internal and external learning experiences Assess the competencies students work toward in these programs Pick the life and work skills that your institution wants to prioritize Integrate co-curricular programs with your student support and advising departments This training takes a practical approach to learning where you will hear expert presentation and then have time to apply the concepts to your institution in a working session. This is an excellent opportunity for your institution to think about how it can build the skills of students while increasing the value of what your school offers. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: CONNECTING THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE TO INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Students not only want to learn content and have the college experience, but they also want to see an obvious tie between their learning and their future after graduation. In this workshop, you will learn the impetus behind these new innovations on campus and how these programs can impact enrollment, retention, completion, and employment upon graduation. 4 AGENDA DAY 1 8:30-9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast for Pre-Conference Attendees (included in workshop registration fee) 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pre-Conference Workshop: Connecting the College Experience to Innovation and Entrepreneurship Today s students are demanding that their college experience look more like the customizable, adaptable, just-in-time world in which they live. They not only want to learn content and have the college experience, but they also want to see an obvious tie between their learning and what they wish to do upon graduation. In this session, you will learn the impetus behind these new innovations on campus and how these programs can impact enrollment, retention, completion, and employment upon graduation. 12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch for Pre-Conference Attendees (included in workshop registration fee) 12:30-1:00 p.m. Registration for Main Conference 1:00-1:30 p.m. Welcome and Introductions 1:30-2:30 p.m. Leading and Coordinating Co-Curricular Programs on Your Campus In this hour, you will have an opportunity to explore challenges and opportunities to consider when leading and coordinating co-curricular programs on your campus. We will discuss who should oversee the programs, where they live on various campuses, and how to align these programs to your institution s overall mission and goals. 2:30-2:45 p.m. Break 2:45-4:15 p.m. Internal Experiential Learning This lesson will show you how three institutions have connected their curriculum to internal applied learning experiences, including on-campus internships, living learning centers, innovation hubs, creative inquiry, and student leadership programs. 4:15-5:00 p.m. Working Session: Internal Experiential Learning In this working session, you will have an opportunity begin thinking about your internal applied learning experiences. 5 AGENDA DAY 2 8:30-9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast (included in registration fee) 9:00-10:15 a.m. External Experiential Learning We will focus on how institutions connect their curriculum to external applied learning experiences. These experiences will include service learning, work study, shadowing, global collaboration, community engagement, and rethinking traditional internships. 10:15-10:30 a.m. Break 10:30-11:15 a.m. Working Session: External Experiential Learning In our second working session, you will have an opportunity to begin thinking about your external applied learning experiences and potential partners in your community. You will have opportunities to share and get feedback from others. 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 a.m. Assessing Competencies of Experiential Learning Assessing such skills as leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation can be challenging. Here you will learn how other institutions have provided means of showing competencies in these areas through credentialing, badging, student learning outcomes, and other means of adding competencies to a degree. 12:15-1:15 p.m. Lunch (included in registration fee) 1:15-2:30 p.m. Identifying the Life/Work Skills You Wish to Prioritize Thus far, you will have discussed how you can connect curriculum to experiences and show competencies. Now you will get a more thorough look at the skills that experiential learning can develop such as: leadership, entrepreneurship, working in a global market, defining questions and seeking solutions, making a difference in your community and beyond, and financial savvy. You will have an opportunity to distill to essential learning outcomes you wish your programs to address. 2:30-2:45 p.m. Break 2:45-3:30 p.m. Integrating with Faculty The key to any innovation in teaching and learning involves getting faculty on board and prepared to teach in a nontraditional environment. Our instructors will walk you through new skills that faculty may need in order to be a part of experiential learning initiatives. These skills can include: teaching non-traditional learners, creating multiple avenues for learning, being comfortable with open-ended inquiry, and collaborating with career services, advising, student support, and other departments. 3:30-4:00 p.m. Integrating with Student Support As with faculty, student support staff must also be integrated into experiential learning initiatives for them to be successful. 6 AGENDA DAY 2 (CONTINUED) 4:00-4:30 p.m. Working Session: Identifying Key Partners In this working session, you will have an opportunity to identify and prioritize key partners that can help your experiential learning initiatives to be successful. DAY 3 8:30-9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast (included in registration fee) 9:00-10:00 a.m. Funding and Personnel Getting experiential learning initiatives off the ground and running requires dedicated oversight and funding. In this hour, you will learn how three institutions organized and funded their initiatives. You will see how the staff was structured from leadership to front-line staff and faculty, and you will gain ideas for starting from scratch to improving an existing program. 10:00-10:15 a.m. Break 10:15-10:45 a.m. Working Session: Funding and Personnel In this final working session, you will have an opportunity to identify potential funding sources for your initiative as well as how personnel will help to staff the program. 10:45-11:45 a.m. The Future of Experiential Learning In this final hour, you will hear emerging ideas that signal where applied learning and higher education as an industry are headed. 7 INSTRUCTORS Jessica Lauritsen, Dean of Students, Hennepin Technical College Jessica works with staff and faculty to ensure all students have the supports they need to be successful in reaching their academic goals. Jessica believes in students and values engaging them in meaningful ways which is evident through the implementation of student life and multiple sustainable programs on campus. Jessica was recently awarded the Lud Spolyer Distinguished Service award by the Minnesota College Professionals Association, named one of the top 40 under 40 award recipients through the American Association of Women in Community Colleges, and led the work that resulted in Hennepin Technical College being named a White House Healthy Campus. Jessica has presented on her work in developing transformative student leadership programs, peer mentor programs, and persistence. Jessica has served in Minnesota State since 2008 and has over 11 years of experience in Higher Education Student Affairs. Jessica holds a Master s Degree in Education: Leadership in Student Affairs from the University of St. Thomas. Julie Nash, Vice Provost for Student Success, University of Massachusetts Lowell Julie is vice provost for student success, where she oversees retention and student success, curriculum, and accreditation. Prior to serving as vice provost, Dr. Nash served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, as Honors Director, and as Gender Studies Director. Barbara Speziale, Associate Director for Academic Affairs, Clemson University Dr. Speziale simultaneously directs Clemson s award-winning Creative Inquiry program, that supports team-based research experiences for more than 4,000 undergraduate students in all academic disciplines each year. She previously directed Clemson s SC Life program, funded by $6.4M over 17 years from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, that supported student research and provided innovative science enrichment activities for thousands of K-12 students and teachers. With $1.9M funding from the National Science Foundation, she established Clemson s FIRST program to support students who are the first in their families to attend college. Dr. Speziale has received more than $14.5M in external grants for science research and education. She is the recipient of many university, state and national awards for education, service, and scientific awareness including the South Carolina Governor s Award for Scientific Awareness, the Society for Environmental Toxicology / Menzie-Cura Environmental Education Award, Clemson s Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Excellence in Service and the Elliott Award for Outstanding Service to Off-Campus, Distance and Continuing Education. twitter.com/academicimpress 7
