POSITION INFORMATION JOB TITLE DEPARTMENT Sustainability Center Assistant, Student Affairs Assistant Division of Undergraduate Studies Center for Regional Sustainability II. DIVISION OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES The mission of the Division of Undergraduate Studies is to develop and enhance learning communities that foster inquiry, interdisciplinarity, advance sustainability, and academic achievement. By continuously improving and adapting academic programs and services, we nurture students abilities to learn, to respect diversity of peoples and ideas, and to work toward social justice and a sustainable future. Through this work, the Division creates opportunities throughout the University and community for creativity, collaboration, innovation, and academic excellence. Our MISSION: To promote student success and advance sustainability by providing all undergraduate students specific academic pathways to world- class intellectual resources and transformative experiences. In our quest to support every San Diego State undergraduate student, we feature programs that provide academic programs that serve students directly, experiential learning and co- curricular opportunities to where students synthesize and apply knowledge, campus- wide student success programs that feature collaboration with student affairs and the academic colleges, and faculty- oriented programs to improve teaching and learning and to assist the SDSU community to create more effective curricula that will prepare our students to address the challenges of building a more sustainable future. The Division works toward its mission through a variety of University- wide programs and services. The Division houses the following: Center for Regional Sustainability & Student Sustainability Center Center for Teaching and Learning Common Experience Program Compact Scholars Program Early Assessment Program Faculty- Student Mentoring Program General Studies 200/400 Internship Course Thomas B. 2 The Division is also responsible for several University- wide mandates and initiatives. It provides coordination and evaluation of the undergraduate programs at San Diego State University and has general responsibility for the undergraduate curriculum and for academic standards and regulations that affect undergraduate education. Additionally, it coordinates the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) reaccreditation process, the assessment of student preparedness in writing and mathematics at the freshman and transfer levels, the assessment of student learning, and of the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement. IV. DUS SUSTAINABILITY CENTER The Division of Undergraduate Center for Regional Sustainability advances sustainability efforts by fostering faculty and student communities, developing engagement opportunities, supporting policy changes, and collecting and reporting sustainability information. As part of this effort, the seeks to increase participation in academic and co- curricular programs, in particular, by students in DUS programs, including the University Honors Program, the Compact Scholars Program, the Liberal Studies and Interdisciplinary majors and Undeclared students that promote sustainable outcomes. At the Center for Regional Sustainability (CRS) we take a comprehensive view of sustainability that takes into account the environmental, social, economic, and cultural aspects of human actions. We seek to create a campus culture that is diverse, innovative, engaged, service- oriented, globally aware, and supports the development of leaders with a vision for a socially just and sustainable future. CRS is home to the Student Sustainability Center, where we promote student success by providing space, staff support, and resources to students to further sustainability efforts. The services we provide include a smart meeting space available to student organizations; project consultation services; physical campus and curriculum information; funding, internship, and event postings to assist students in developing projects advocating for policies that create solutions for our campus and communities. CRS also supports a sustainability institute and summer workshops for faculty to integrate sustainability across the curriculum by redesigning courses, developing new curricular offerings, and infusing sustainability in experiential learning. V. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The Sustainability Center Assistant, under direct supervision of the Sustainability Coordinator, will work with students and student organizations to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of sustainability programming across campus. Additionally, the Assistant will develop outreach materials and events to engage campus and community stakeholders. The Sustainability Center Assistant will be evaluated each semester for the purpose of providing him or her with feedback on observed growth and learning. There may be opportunities to develop leadership skills in the following areas: facilitating student projects and advocacy, interpersonal communication, public speaking, time management, organization, event planning, data management, and creative problem solving. V. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The position will carry specific duties and responsibilities as follows:

3 Advisement 1. Under the direction of the Sustainability Coordinator, assist in advising students on sustainability related projects and programs, including strategies for engaging faculty and administrators, and gathering data. 2. Collaborate with the Sustainability Coordinator on new program development, including program research, outreach to potential collaborators, and development of program components. Programmatic 3. Assist the Sustainability Coordinator with the development, implementation, and evaluation of student and faculty programing such as workshops. 4. Assist with the redesign and enhancement of CRS student sustainability materials (to include a student guide, web sites, and promotional materials). 5. Assist with special projects as assigned. Administrative 6. Organize materials for sustainability presentations and campus events. 7. Book venues for events. 8. Purchase materials for CRS programming. 9. Other duties as assigned. VI. REQUIREMENTS 10. Must have a 3.00 cumulative G.P.A. for graduate courses during employment. 11. Must have a passion for helping students and advancing sustainability. 12. Must be enrolled in at least 6 units of graduate coursework at San Diego State University during the academic year. 13. Must be available to work hours per week during the academic year. 14. Preference will be given to students who have experience advising student, developing outreach programing or have worked in a field that relates to sustainability. VII. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED 1. Ability to work in a team environment and independently. 2. Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of campus sustainability programs and resources

4 3. Understanding of student development and strong ability to relate to individual students 4. Strong organizational and programming skills, with attention to details 5. Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations 6. Skills in working with diverse student populations 7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, and students 8. Knowledge of group dynamics and motivation techniques 9. Strong written and oral communication skills including phone skills and public speaking skills. 10. Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and publishing programs 11.
