3 Page 3 ESL STUDENTS SUCCESS STORIES YUN GUAN from China started her American life journey in Carson City at the end of Settling down in a new country can be tough for everyone. Language is one of the challenges. Although Yun used to work for a European company in Beijing, she found it challenging to communicate with locals naturally. With knowing only her husband living in Carson City, she reached out to the community seeking opportunities of learning American culture and socializing with locals. That was where the ESL In-Home Program came in to her life and played a very important role in her life later on due to her meeting October 2010 with her Carson City ESL Community Volunteer Tutor, Carol Edmund. With time and practice, Yun s English skills and understanding of America improved substantially. Meanwhile, she volunteered at the Carson City public library and enrolled in courses at WNC. August 2012, Yun started graduate school at Univ. of Nevada Las Vegas; May 2014, she received 2 master s degrees in Business Administration and Hotel Administration as a member of the best honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. July-August 2014 Yun and Tutor Carol Edmund This is Yun > > Bob Edmund, YUN, Carol Edmund One of Carson s dedicated Community Volunteer Tutor, Jane Devaney reports that her student Rosie Aquilar is happy that she is a legal driver now - received her driver's license due to her reading/understanding progression. She also has found a job due to her English speaking progression. Good work! Student ROCIO MORALES I should say former student has enrolled at Western Nevada College after progressing sufficiently in ESL and Computer learnings to now attend college. Her dedication and commitment in learning English Language Skills in our program were the highlight of her tutor and her daughter. Rocio was so extremely motivated to learn that she attended 3 ESL classes as well as our Computer Literacy class so that she would learn rapidly and reach her goal. She then became one of our angel tutors teaching ESL to others because, as she said, to give back what the ESL In-Home Program gave to her. Currently she is a caretaker and taking a Certified Nursing Assistant class. Her dream is to be a psychologist. 4 Page 4 This is RON ROBERTS, our Community Volunteer Tutor in Carson City since 2007 teaches ESL, GED and Citizenship Study. Because of Ron, we have 160 students who have gone through our program and are now U.S. Citizens. We call Ron a professional tutor since he also conducts tours as a docent at the Capitol, Museum, and Legislative buildings, as well as a volunteer for FISH, and when we are inoculated for flu shots you will find him directing traffic. You see him here cleaning up weeds adjacent to the Fremont Elementary School, participating in the recent GraceWorks Project Day. He serves on many Boards of Directors for various organizations. (Wish he could find time to serve on our ESL Board but he s only available in the middle of the night.) :( The English Language (NO WONDER OUR FOREIGN STUDENTS HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME LEARNING OUR LANGUAGE.READ ON) There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger, neither apple or pine in pineapple. And while no one knows what is in a hotdog, you can be pretty sure it isn t canine. English muffins were not invented in England nor French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads, which aren t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write, but fingers don t fing, grocers don t groce, and hammers don t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn t the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, two meese? Is cheese the plural of choose? One mouse, 2 mice. One louse, 2 lice. One house, 2 hice? If teachers taught, why didn t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Why do people recite at a play, and play at a recital? Ship by truck or car and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another? When a house burns up, it burns down. You fill in a form by filling it out and an alarm clock goes off by going on. You get in and out of a car, yet you get on and off a bus. When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it? (Author unknown) TUTORS: Let s start a Story Book of writings from your students. Please collect and send some are already doing this. I will put together a scrap book of stories. Students can write anything letters, stories, wishes, etc. A mother cat was walking down the street followed by her 4 precious kittens. All of a sudden she spies a menacing, drooling Rottweiler approaching. Her kittens begin to tremble, but she turns to them and says, Don t worry my darlings; I ll take care of this. The dog comes right up into her face, and all of a sudden she goes, GRRRRROUGH!!! The dog is so shocked that he turns and runs away. Mama cat turns to her kittens and says You see..it always pays to know another language! Cuando de repente, la mamá gata ve un amenazante rabioso Rottweiler acercándose. Sus gatitos empezaron a temblar, pero ella volteo hacia ellos y les dijo, No se preocupen mis queridos; Yo me encargaré de esto. El perro se acerca directamente hacia la cara de la mamá gata, y de repente ella hace un GRRRRROUGH!!!!! El perro queda tan impactado que da la vuelta y corre. La mamá gata regresa con sus gatitos y les dice, Ya ven. Siempre vale la pena saber otro lenguaje!
