1 In memory, recognition and appreciation of a key Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) leader and physician scientist who spearheaded scholarship locally, nationally and internationally. Mission of the Honor Society To recognize and honor medical students who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to improve health outcomes through research, innovation and scholarly endeavors. Induction criteria students and projects In its inaugural year, the RGHS membership will be open to MSIII and MSIV students at MCOM who have demonstrated excellence in scholarly projects. Applicants who fulfill the induction criteria, are encouraged to self-nominate by completing an application and providing two letters of support. Membership will be competitive with anticipated maximum inductees no greater than 20% of the total class. Faculty members, residents and distinguished alumni may be considered in the future. A. Qualifying Students i. MSIII and MSIV medical students in good academic and professional standing as confirmed by the MCOM Office of Student Affairs ii. Demonstrated record of original scholarship B. Qualifying Scholarship i. Scholarly projects are encouraged in all fields, including but not limited to biomedical research, innovation, education, the arts, creative and service oriented projects. 1. Design should have hypotheses/objectives, needs assessments, applicable data collection and analyses 2. Projects should contribute towards improving medical attitudes, health outcomes and the advancement of medicine ii. Successful project(s) must include at minimum one of the following: 1. Authorship of a published journal article in a peer-reviewed journal 2. First authorship of a competitively reviewed abstract accepted for oral or poster presentation at a regional, national or international conference 3. Development of a service project, innovation/entrepreneurship, arts and humanities or educational module representing relevant scholarly work 4. Award of extramural or intramural funding for project 5. Special recognition or award for scholarly works C. Students will apply directly via on-line application (see Appendix A) providing the following: 1. Personal Statement 2. CV 3. 2 Letters of Recommendation submitted directly to RISE by: a. MCOM and/or affiliate faculty, MCOM administrative leadership, peers or RGHS alumni b. One letter can be from collaborative faculty who are non-mcom i. Student applications are reviewed by committees consisting of RISE leadership, invited faculty and alumni
2 D. Criteria of the Scholarly Work i. At a minimum, 80% of the work must be performed while the student is enrolled at MCOM ii. Scholarly work performed while a student is on an approved leave of absence for the purpose of performing this work is eligible. Scholarly work may be conducted at an outside institution, provided the student was enrolled at MCOM or on a leave of absence for the purpose of performing this work iii. Scholarly projects done during the pursuit of a concurrent degree may be considered E. Scholarly Attitude and Professional Behavior i. Successful candidates must reflect the highest ideals of the profession of medicine, having 1. Respect for others 2. Enhancing an inclusive environment 3. Ethical and honorable conduct 4. Commitment to scholarly approaches to the practice of medicine F. Timeline for Consideration i. Introduction to the classes December 2016 ii. Call for nominees in JANUARY 2017 iii. Deadline for receipt of supporting documents in MARCH 2017 iv. Decision for induction into RGHS in APRIL 2017 for MSIV students and JUNE 2017 for MSIII students v. Recognition ceremony during senior graduation week of Year 4 Benefits of membership in Honor Society A. Recognition by fellow scholars i. Acknowledgment in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letter in advance of residency applications ii. Highlighting of scholarly work at the Gallery of Scholarship at graduation iii. Identification at the Graduation Awards Ceremony and in the graduation booklet iv. RGHS Medallion worn at graduation v. Highlight scholarly work poster wall vi. USF Health Research Day Recognition if applicable vii. Inductees shared with USF system for quarterly newsletter viii. Annual celebratory event B. Opportunity to be considered for additional awards to be presented at the annual celebratory event some in developmental stage i. Arts & Humanities Award ii. Basic Science Research Award iii. Clinical Science Research Award iv. Community and Global Scholarly Award v. Educational Scholarly Award vi. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Scholarly Award vii. Near-Peer Mentor Leadership Award viii.
