The new Medical Sciences Major will commence in Units will include back ground information in normal body structure and function, mechanisms of disease from all the pre-clinical scientific disciplines including: Anatomy Physiology Public Health Pharmacology Biochemistry Pathology Microbiology You will be able to take a second major in a related or unrelated area from across the university plus choose a number of broadening units from diverse fields. Pre-requisites: Mathematics Applications (ATAR) or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty. By completing the Medical Sciences Major it is a way of reducing the duration of Medicine, Dentistry and Podiatry by one year. Level 1, (Year 1) Semester One Form & Function: Broad body plan, body organisation and basic histology, basic physiology, cell communication and cell biology The Facts of Life: Basic Chemistry & Biochemistry, cell biology, genetics and heredity Level 1, (Year 1) Semester Two Cell Survival and Communication: Metabolism, nutrition, cell signaling and cell cycle Understanding Health & Disease in People and Populations: Public & population health, communication skills, Aboriginal health Level 2, (Year 2) Semester One Body Defences: Immunology, Microbiology and infection Blood & Drugs: Pharmacology, Blood and blood pathology Level 2, (Year 2) Semester Two Essentials of Research in the Health & Medical Sciences: Scientific method, Research skills, Statistics, Epidemiology Human Development & Genetics: Development, genetics, abnormalities and cancer Level 3, (Year 3) Semester One Body Systems and Disease I: Skin, Musculoskeletal & soft tissue, Neurological & Psychological senses Body Systems and Disease II: Haematology & Immunology, Cardiovascular & respiratory, Level 3, (Year 3) Semester Two Body Systems and Disease III: Gastroenterology & Nutrition, Endocrine Body Systems and Disease IV: Renal & Reproductive & Life Course
