Truxillo, Harris County Department of Education, presents Career Information. 3 Scholarships UT Health Golf Tournament Scholarship Intent: The intent of this scholarship is to reduce the level of schoolrelated debt. This is a financial need based scholarship. Qualifications: Be a Texas resident, for tuition purposes; be in good academic standing; have demonstrated financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); be enrolled at least half time, and be enrolled in a degree-seeking program for Fall 2011 at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Required Documents: To apply for the UTHealth Golf Tournament Scholarship, students must complete the following documents: 1. UTHealth Golf Tournament Scholarship Application: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): Your application must be received in the Office of Student Financial Services by Nov. 4, Due Date for Applying: The deadline date for completing the scholarship application and the FAFSA is Nov. 4, Completed forms may be faxed to the Office of Student Financial Services at Notification of Awards: Due to the volume of applications received, only selected applicants will be notified by Nov. 30, No exceptions will be made for an incomplete application. 6 4 Internships / Practicums Children s Defense Fund: Policy Internship The intern provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors interim legislative committees and helps with the execution of advocacy related activities including advocate training/recruitment, story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings and other Department projects. Expect 15 to 20 hours/ week. This internship can be in Austin or Houston. Children s Defense Fund: Communications Internship The intern monitors media, assists with publication and press releases, and helps maintain CDF s online and social media presence. The intern will work closely with the Communications Director and members of other departments to help develop messages that translate to a broad audience and motivate action. The intern is in charge of daily media monitoring and production of a daily news summary as well as maintaining CDF s online and social media presence. Expect hours / week. Safe Mothers, Safe Babies: In-Country Intern We expect our interns to use their previous work and/or school experience to develop our projects further. We are looking for culturally competent individuals that will use their knowledge and expertise to work on parts of our projects. Our educational projects focus on providing First Aid, disease prevention, Emergency Medical services training, and organic farming training. The preventative projects seek to prevent malaria and malnutrition. While the direct care projects provide medical supplies, care and emergency transport in conjunction with local medical professionals. 40 hours / week. Igana District, Uganda. 7 Mother s Against Drunk Driving Health Policy Practicum Work with volunteers non key legislative issues that promote MADD s mission. (ie: ignition interlocks for all convicted offenders, checkpoints, emerging technology promotion. This practicum is offered in Houston. Contact Ms. Lori Stevens at lori.stevens@madd.org or The Methodist Hospital Methodist International The project intern will provide administrative and project management support to Methodist International (MI). The intern will be responsible for project management as assigned, including completing a project relating the community benefits program, MI operations and business development. The positions requires the ability to lead, coordinate and complete projects with minimal supervision and must be capable of working individually or as part of a team. This internship will be held in Houston. Contact Ms. Nkem Okafor (Project Manager, The Methodist Hospital Methodist International) at nokafor@tmhs.org or MD Anderson Graduate Research Assistant / Trainee Available immediately, the Center for Health Equity and Evaluation Research (CHEER) at MD Anderson Cancer Center has an outstanding work opportunity for a Master s or Doctoral student. The project goal entails qualitative research aimed at understanding how to effectively links frequent users of EDs for primary care with appropriate, officebased providers. Assist with scheduling of focus group meetings, including contacting prospective participants; Assist primary investigator and/or facilitator during focus group sessions; schedule and conduct interviews with prospective study participants and key informants; assist with coding and analyzing qualitative data; enter data, organize information collected and prepare project documentation; assist with writing manuscripts related to study findings; perform other research tasks as needed. 8 Yale-New Haven Hospital: Operations Intern Yale-New Haven Hospital offers summer internship opportunities in hospital administration. Interns are based in the Department of Operations Support, an internal consulting group within the hospital, and are assigned a mentor from the Executive Team. In addition to obtaining invaluable mentorship, interns also gain first-hand operational and experience in a leading academic medical center as integral members of project teams. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a master health services administration, business administration or closely related academic program. The program begins in early June and applications must be submitted by February 1. Applications will be due in early February Emory Clinic Summer Internship The Emory Clinic Summer Internship Program typically starts in mid-may or early June and lasts through mid-august. Students work full time during the week with their assigned departments or projects. Students are responsible for keeping their project work on track to meet their respective deliverable deadlines throughout the summer. Additionally, students have the opportunity to attend senior leadership meetings, be exposed to departments throughout The Emory Clinic, attend lunch and learns to discuss various topics with peers and hear guest speakers, and formally present projects to The Emory Clinic section and executive leadership. 10 Texas Health Resources Summer Administrative Internship This program offers students an opportunity to gain familiarity with administrative and/or clinical functions and to participate in daily activities of the health care organization at an entity hospital or at the system level. More information can be found at < Applications are due March 31st, 2012 Primary Children s Medical Center Administrative Intern The Hospital Administration Summer Internship is designed to augment classroom learning and to prepare future healthcare leaders for opportunities upon graduation. The incumbent will work directly with members of the leadership team on a variety of short-term strategic and operational improvement projects. In addition, he/she will partner with an executive mentor, attend leadership meetings and participate in development workshops. The internship should provide a useful introduction to Hospital Administration s realm of responsibility to both its patients and their families, its employees, as well as the surrounding community. More information is available at < Applications are due November 28th, Fellowships Houston-Galveston Schweitzer Fellows Program The Houston-Galveston Schweitzer Fellows Program seeks to develop Leaders in Service who are dedicated to working with the underserved in their Fellowship year and beyond. Fellows design and implement their own 200-hour community service projects that address local unmet health needs and participate in monthly Fellowship activities. We select a diverse group of up to 12 students each year from multiple schools and academic disciplines, including biology, education, engineering, law, medicine, nursing, optometry, public health, religion, and social work, among others. The Fellowship is open to students enrolled in a graduate-level or professional degree program through April 2013; Fellows receive a $2500 stipend. 11 6 Jobs Baylor College of Medicine: Research Assistant Baylor College of Medicine, Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy is seeking a full-time Research Assistant. Individual hired will be providing ongoing research support and coordination for the project team. The primary project for the individual hired will be an NIH-funded study of the ethical and psychosocial impact of integrating information from whole genome sequencing into clinical care. The individual hired will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities for a new NIH-funded research project; including, conducting comprehensive literature searches on bioethics and health policy literature, coordinating project meetings, tracking and reporting on project components and benchmarks to ensure successful recruitment and participation rates, coordinating and documenting data collection strategies to ensure accuracy of information, assisting with developing and administering surveys to study participants, and assisting with quantitative and qualitative data entry and analysis. The person in this position will also provide general research and writing support, help draft project reports and manuscripts, and provide general administrative assistance as needed. The Operations Managers/Site Supervisor is responsible for the workflow and performance of the front desk department. The goal is to obtain superior performance and maximize productivity. This person will work closely with the Chief Operations Officer. Specific responsibilities include: supervising the front desk staff responsible for evaluating staff performance, developing standards, ensuring basic competencies for all staff; continuously optimize staff roles and responsibilities to meet performance goals; responsible for the facility s opening and closing procedures; responsible for collecting cash from the front desk at the closing of day and submitting to CFO; assist with the coordination of policies and procedures; provides random chart audits to ensure eligibility processes are followed.
