Working Seminar with Christian Rubio, Associate Professor of Modern Languages, "Towards a Secular Education: La Institución Libre de Enseñanza." Dr. Rubio s research focuses on Modern Peninsular literature and culture, Spanish for Business, and Spanish in the United States. Thursday, April 23, 6:30pm, Wilder Pavilion. Working Seminar with Casey Hayward, Associate Professor of English and Media Studies, Seeing RED: Addressing Systemic and Implicit Bias within the Massachusetts Juvenile Justice System. A Poetry and Short Fiction Reading by Barbara Paul-Emile, Professor of English and Media Studies and Maurice E. Goldman Distinguished Professor of Arts & Sciences. Panel Discussion on Whose Voice Gets Heard?: Economic Inequality and Political Participation in the U.S., cosponsored with the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and the Office of the President. The panelists are Noah Berger, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center; Kay Schlozman, the J. Joseph Moakley Professor of Political Science at Boston College; and Katherine Levine Einstein, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Boston University. Juliet Gainsborough, Associate Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at Bentley University, will moderate the panel, and Dan Everett, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Bentley University, will make introductory remarks. Kimani Paul-Emile, Associate Professor of Law at Fordham University, Beyond Title VII: Rethinking Race, Ex- Offender Status and Employment Discrimination in the Information Age. Professor Paul-Emile teaches and researches in the areas of law and biomedical ethics, health law, drug policy, and legislation and regulation. International Film Series: The Black Maria Film Festival, presented by Festival Director Jane Steuerwald. For 32 years, the festival has been fulfilling its mission to advocate, exhibit, and reward cutting edge works from national and international independent film and videomakers. Monday, February 23 - Wednesday, February 25, Valente Center Distinguished Visiting Scholar Alison Jaggar, College Professor of Distinction in the Departments of Philosophy and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Research Coordinator at the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature, University of Oslo, Norway. She is the author, co-author, or editor of ten books, including Feminist Politics and Human Nature (1983) and, most recently, Gender and Global Justice(2013). Jabari Asim, Associate Professor of Writing, Literature, and Publishing at Emerson College, From the Personal to the Public: Turning Experience into Creative Expression. Professor Asim is the author of four books for adults and six books for children. His most recent works are What Obama Means...For Our Culture, Our Politics, Our Future (2009) and A Taste of Honey: Stories (2010). Co-sponsored with The Forum for Creative Writers. Iftkhar's research and teaching interests lie in the areas of race/ethnicity, gender and religion in relation to citizenship and nation as well as in questions of communication, identity and the public sphere. Parmesh Shahani, founder of the Gondrej India Culture Lab, "Creating an Open Source Corporation: Lessons from the Field. Dr. Shahani is editor-at-large for Verve magazine, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, a Yale World Fellow, a TED Fellow, a Utrecht University- Impakt Fellow, and author of Gay Bombay: Globalization, Love and (Be)Longing in Contemporary India (Sage, 2008). His work addresses creativity and innovation as well and gender and queer studies. Co-sponsored by the Global Studies Department, the Gender Studies Program and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Chuck Collins, Inequality Matters: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It. The great grandson of the meatpacker Oscar Mayer, Collins is co-founder of Wealth for the Common Good and The Patriotic Millionaires, two organizations that advocate for fair tax policy. Among the books that he has authored or co-authored is Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes, a book that Collins co-authored with Bill Gates. Deborah Willis, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, The Making of an Iconic Image. Dr. Willis was a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow and Fletcher Fellow, and a 2000 MacArthur Fellow. Her creative and scholarly work deals with images of African Americans. Co-sponsored by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. October 15- October 22, Valente Center Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Dirk Kruijt, Emeritus Professor, Utrecht University, Netherlands. Dr. Kruijt is author of Guerrillas: War and Peace in Central America and Societies of Fear: The Legacy of Civil War, Violence and Terror in Latin America. Dr. Browne works on contemporary rhetorical theory, specializing in ethnic rhetoric, vernacular rhetoric, and rhetoric(s) of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora. He is the author of Tropic Tendencies: Rhetoric, Popular Culture, and the Anglophone Caribbean. Monday, October 6, 4pm-5:15pm, Lindsay 30. Atalya Ein Mor, chef/entrepreneur, former Israeli army soldier, Realizing My Dream: The Never-Ending Learning Curve of a Young Entrepreneur. Ms. Ein Mor has developed a restaurant business in her home area of Ein Kerem outside of Jerusalem. Co-sponsored by the Dean of Arts and Sciences. Tuesday, September 30, 6pm, Wilder Pavilion. International Film Series: Miss Sarajevo (U.S./Ireland/Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1995, 33 minutes). Filmmaker Bill Carter will be in attendance and lead a discussion after the screening; the film will begin at 6:30pm following a reception with the filmmaker. Carter is the author of many books, the most recent of which is Boom, Bust, Boom: A Story about Copper, the Metal that Runs the World (Simon and Schuster). His award-winning documentary Miss Sarajevo, produced by U2 s Bono, follows residents of Sarajevo who are trying to live normal lives at the height of the city s siege. Working Seminar with Courtney Cole, Assistant Professor of Communication, Newbury College, Storying Self and Society in the Aftermath of Mass Violence: Theorizing a Narrative Transitional Justice. Siva Vaidhyanathan, Robertson Professor in Media Studies and Chair, Department of Media Studies, University of Virginia, The Operating System of Your Life: How Tech Companies and Big Data Try to Govern Your Identity, Your Knowledge, and Your Refrigerator." Dr. Vaidhyanathan is the author of The Googlization of Everything (2011), The Anarchist in the Library (2004), and Copyrights and Copywrongs (2001). His research focuses on digital media, media policy, copyright, and technology.
