20 2001 Reviewed manuscript for The Journal of Media Economics. NEW COURSES DEVELOPED Undergraduate Updated and revised: present Revising Journalism 1210 to be taught as a hybrid online class Revised Journalism 4510 Newspaper Management and Ethics class to be taught one day per week Revised syllabus and lesson plans for Journalism 1210 Mass Communication and Society. Adopted use of remote control devices for student use in the auditorium so this large class (about 500 students Fall and 250 students Spring) could participate in class discussion via polling and quiz questions incorporated in slides Revised syllabus and lesson plans for Journalism 4321 Opinion Writing. Based class on compilation of materials collected by both students and instructor instead of textbook Developed syllabus and lesson plans for Journalism 4820 Media History to focus on research projects rather than lecture and exams Mentored new adjuncts and teaching assistants for Journalism 2310 beginning reporting course. None had taught the course before Taught first two days of Summer Journalism 2310 beginning reporting course and helped adjunct prepare syllabus and lesson plans for the course Developed syllabus and lesson plans for Journalism 4321 Opinion Writing, which had not been taught for at least five years. No syllabus was available in the department files Revised Journalism 4510 Newspaper Management and Ethics course from lecture to case study format Revised Journalism 3310 Feature Writing class to include more emphasis on magazine writing. Coordinated course requirements and logistics with adjunct professor teaching a section of the course Developed exemplary course objectives for Journalism 2310 beginning reporting, which is part of Arts and Sciences core. 20

21 2003 Helped adjunct faculty members revise Journalism 2320 advanced reporting course to portfolio grading system. This method is intended to judge a student s body of work more on the quality of stories rather than the quantity. Helped staff established editing positions at Daily to coordinate assignment of lab stories Revised Journalism 2310 beginning reporting course to include more live reporting assignments while retaining emphasis on laboratory training Created Reporting Lab Committee to improve cooperation between The North Texas Daily and department s reporting classes. Mentored adjunct faculty member in teaching reporting courses and supervising reporting labs Revised long-semester Journalism 2310 for adaptation to Summer sessions Revised Journalism 2310 from beat reporting course to laboratory course in order to handle dramatic increase in enrollment and better prepare students for working on the campus newspaper and in advanced reporting classes Revised grading system and developed new procedures for Journalism 2320 advanced reporting course in order to handle increase in enrollment and changes in reporting classes. Graduate 2012 Added online component to Journalism 5050 Media Studies and Theories Added online component to Journalism 5050 Readings in Mass Communication New prep for Journalism 5050 Readings in Mass Communication. Created new reading list for graduate class Assisted Graduate Director Mitch Land in writing thesis guidelines for master's students in the department s Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism Revised Journalism 5010 and Journalism 5020 for teaching summer courses at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique, where the primary language is Portuguese. (The teaching was funded by a $10,000 Africa-UNT Graduate Program Initiative proposed by The Toulouse School of Graduate Studies and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research to the Charn Uswachoke International Development Fund.) THE NORTH TEXAS DAILY ADVISING Policies and Operations 2004 With Department chair reorganized the Daily professional staff so that the Student Publications Director would supervise the other professional staff members thus easing and streamlining the duties of the incoming Daily adviser. The new adviser now has more time for research, teaching and advising the student news staff. 21

22 2003 Published next-day coverage of football team s bowl game in the Daily s online edition. This was done during the semester break when the paper does not normally publish Published special year-end edition on football team s success over the past three years. Enough ads were sold to justify a paper twice as large as the original plan of four pages News staff broke story on convicted rapist who continued attending classes between his plea agreement and sentencing. Story attracted national attention Improved security of newsroom by installing alarm and new glass doors allowing staff to keep door shut while maintaining open appearance and atmosphere. Restricted access to newsroom to staff only Helped Ad staff redesign ad office with new work stations to improve efficiency and accommodate larger staff Helped plan readership survey to be conducted in Supervised the establishment of the Bob Stanley Reporter of the Month award and designed certificate issued to each recipient. Each recipient also earns $ Journalism 3320 Desk Work class special editions moved to online publication unless determined to be newsworthy and profitable. The Daily previously published special sections as learning vehicles for this class. Enrollment increases made this policy no longer practical. The new policy benefited both the department and the newspaper Worked with Journalism 2320 advanced reporting instructor, teaching assistants and Daily staff to revise the copy editing desk to more closely follow the systems used at commercial newspapers Helped establish Production Committee, which meets weekly to discuss and resolve production errors Hired additional sales representative to handle increased number of accounts Daily news staff totaled 47 for Spring 2003, largest recorded number of news positions. Made possible by addition of Daily internships and salary adjustments Published next-day coverage of football team's bowl game in the Daily s online edition. This was done during the semester break when the paper does not normally publish Worked with Dr. John-Mark Dempsey, broadcast professor, to establish NT Daily Sounds, a webcast for the Daily s online edition. This webcast allows broadcast and news-ed students the opportunity to work together to learn about the convergence of media and to gain practical experience in broadcast journalism. 22

23 2002 Worked with Photography Prof. Susan Zavoina to convert Daily from wet lab to digital photography Added four drops to expand newspaper distribution off campus. Distribution increased from 9,000 to 10,000 to reflect increased demand by readers Published special Monday edition to report on football game that clinched conference championship for UNT. As far as we know, this was the first special edition published by the Daily. So many readers requested souvenir copies, including the office of the president that the paper had to print an extra 1,000 copies Daily conducted two public journalism projects: an edition devoted to parking problems at UNT, and a semester-long project covering the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats in Denton County Staff size averages 42 for Fall and Spring 2002, reflecting success of internship program and managing salary budget Started publishing special advertising editions with team rosters that can be used as Go Mean Green posters at basketball and football games Added circulation assistant to help better maintain news racks and keep track of circulation Published next-day coverage of the football team s bowl game. This was the first time the staff is aware of that breaking news was published during a semester break, when the paper is normally shut down Helped students establish internship program to allow students to volunteer to write stories for the paper and increase size of news staff. Staff increased from average of 24 for Fall and Spring 2000 to average of 40 for Spring and Fall Established Professional Staff Committee, which meets monthly to discuss all aspects of Daily operations and policies Helped establish and served on special diversity committee including media professionals and faculty charged with studying North Texas Daily staffing and content. Helped implement and wrote reports on the actions suggested by the committee Revised Slash, the Daily s weekly faculty critique. The meeting was moved from the newsroom to a conference room to avoid distractions and provide a more professional meeting environment. The focus was revised to include ethical, legal and content issues raised by the past week s issues rather than just stylistic errors. Daily Awards 2004 Associated Press Managing Editors Association of Texas 2 nd Place best college daily newspaper. 23
