Stephanie Bowlin completed her MBA at University of the Cumberlands, Dec Dr. Jennifer Chambers defended her dissertation A Comparative Case Study of Factors Affecting Reading Achievement in High and Low-Performing Elementary Rural Appalachian Schools at Eastern Kentucky University, March Marc Hensley completed his Masters in Christian Studies at University of the Cumberlands, May Dr. Barry Vann was selected as 2012 Outstanding Alumnus of Roane State Community College and honored at a reception in the Manly Art Gallery Oak Ridge, TN, September 21, Dr. Vann has two doctorate degrees and is the author of seven books. John Varley received the Best Documentary Award for his documentary My Brother, My Sister at the Daytona Film Festival in Daytona Beach, FL, November 8-11, This documentary was also chosen as an official selection for the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in Fort Lauderdale, FL, October 19 - November 11, 2012.

8 Academic Departments Achievements and News Biology Kathy Hockert, biology office manager, went to half-time in the department. She and Andrew adopted Mary Alison (Ali) Hockert in October. Olivia Hilchey, doctoral student in Clinical Psychology, is helping as part-time administrative assistant position in the department. Business October 25, Sigma Beta Delta inducted 11 new members into the UC chapter at their annual banquet. New officers installed were: Nicole Braden, President; Laura Brock, Vice President; and Kendra Troxell, Secretary. In November, members of Sigma Beta Delta presented "Kids Count" financial literacy program to three third grade classes at Williamsburg Elementary School. This was the third consecutive year Sigma Beta Delta members have visited Williamsburg Elementary School. Communications Debate Team Debate teams received speaker awards and advanced to outrounds at all of the tournaments attended in the fall: Third place overall for large schools in debate sweeps and reached semifinals, Berea, KY, October 19-20, Two students reached quarterfinals at LSU- Shreveport, LA, November 2-3, Three teams reached quarterfinals in debate at Belmont University, Nashville, TN, November 9-10, Team placed third overall in debate at Belmont University, Nashville, TN, November 9-10, All Cumberlands teams advanced to outrounds at Transylvania University, Georgetown, KY, November 30-December 1, Human Services and Psychology Undergraduate Research Students Hannah Brooks, Angeline Smith, April Lindsay, Stephanie Watts, Sabrina Smith, Kayla Smith, Gregory Hummel and Jefferson Jones presented their research related to community based intervention programs at the University of North Carolina Asheville, September 21-22, Faculty mentors were Mr. Steven Halstead, Dr. Gina Bowlin, Mrs. Jennifer Knuckles, and Dr. Eric Stephens. This was a grant funded by a joint partnership between the Appalachian College Association and the University of North Carolina.
