Summer, Research and Refereed Publications, Books and Edited Volumes Current Research Cultural studies of conjunto dance and organization in San Antonio The history of popular dancing is partly a history of place. While dance has been examined for its potential of social solidarity as an expressive form of broader relationships to the political, this research examines dance and the social organization of fans who are co-producers of a musical/dance scene. This ethnographic research will consist of an ethnographic study of Polka Dawgs, a local institution of San Antonio. Centering on the dancing, the strategic location of dancers and fans to the band on stage offers a way to understand the history and interpretation of local, regional subculture among Chicanos/as of South Texas. The purpose of this ethnographic study is to examine community practices in order to analyze social life of South Texas culture and community. Since informal community institutions help shape the practices and meaning of group life, I will examine the dance forms (manner and style) as the pleasure of engagement as well as the organizational community to understand how symbolic systems operate within the community of practioners as well as to ascertain how social subjects (the individuals who make up collectivities) make meaning of their participation as fans/audience and as dancers. Combining the ethnographic research with the analysis of the body in movement provides an understanding of how "dancing" happens, when and where, and what meanings and pleasures people attach to it under specific conditions. On going Research The Boys in the Band and the Girls Who Were Their Fans: Social Identity among Mexican American Youth, examines Mod subculture, Catholicism, The Pill, Rock n Roll Shows, Cruising Whittier Blvd., during the 1960s, particularly focusing on The Girls. The sixyear ethnographic project started with a survey with 20 women, followed by preliminary interviews with three middle class Chicanas. The project examines adolescent girls culture in the context of a post-war economy, civil rights and their aspirations for middle class status. Refereed Article Miranda, Marie Keta.
