Faculty appointments are one of the most important decisions that our university makes. Emory s new faculty hires will be instrumental in providing leadership and bringing new ideas to the academic enterprise. The individuals highlighted in these pages will contribute to the University s mission to create, preserve, teach, and apply knowledge in the service of humanity. 5 Tenure Track Faculty Candler School of Theology Nichole Renée Phillips, PhD Assistant Professor of Religion and Human Difference Nichole Renée Phillips completed her PhD in Religion, Psychology and Culture at Vanderbilt University (2012). Prior to joining the Candler faculty, she served as a postdoctoral fellow at Candler through the Lilly-funded Postdoctoral Fellowships in Practical Theology and Religious Practices. An Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, her research interests lie at the intersection of religion, psychology, and culture; African American history and cultural studies; practical theology; and cultural anthropology. She is presently revising her dissertation - a regional study of a rural community, its focus is also on civil religion, the Church, ritual, and race in America for publication. Emory College of Arts and Sciences Tanine Allison, PhD Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies Tanine Allison completed her PhD in Film and Media studies at the University of Pittsburgh (2010). Prior to joining the regular faculty at Emory in 2013, she held an ACLS New Faculty Fellowship at Emory. Her research interests include the intersections of cinema and digital media studies. Her articles have been published in journals including Quarterly Review of Film and Video and Literature/Film Quarterly. Rizvana Bradley, PhD Assistant Professor in Women s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Rizvana Bradley completed her PhD in Literature at Duke University (2013). She joined the faculty at Emory in Her primary research focus is black feminist theory specializing in African and African-American studies with an emphasis on the art and culture of the black diaspora. She has published in Women and Performance: A Journal of Feminist Theory. Vincent Bruyere, PhD Assistant Professor of French Vincent Bruyere completed his PhD in French Studies at the University of Warwick (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held positions at Pennsylvania State University and Algoma University. His primary research focus is francophone literature of the Americas. His articles have been published in journals including Arena Romanistica and Intermédialités. 5

6 Justin Burton, PhD Assistant Professor of Physics Justin Burton completed his PhD in Physics at the University of California, Irvine (2006). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Irvine. His primary research focus is experimental condensed matter physics. His articles have been published in journals including Journal of Applied Physics and Physical Review Letters. Daniel Dilks, PhD Assistant Professor of Psychology Daniel Dilks completed his PhD in Cognitive Science at Johns Hopkins University (2005). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His primary research focus is understanding how the human visual cortex develops, and whether and how it changes in adulthood. His articles have been published in journals including Journal of Neuroscience and Developmental Science. Francesco Evangelista, PhD Assistant Professor of Chemistry Francesco Evangelista completed his PhD in Computational Chemistry at the University of Georgia (2008). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. His primary research focus is the development of new electronic structure theories for studying chemical reactivity, optical properties of molecules, and quantum tunneling effects. His articles have been published in journals including Journal of Physical Chemistry and Journal of the American Chemical Society. Susan Gagliardi, PhD Assistant Professor of Art History Susan Gagliardi completed her PhD in Art History at the University of California, Los Angeles (2010). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a position at The City University of New York. Her primary research focus is the form, function, and meaning of Komo and Kono masks. Her essays have appeared in publications including Central Nigeria Unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley and Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. Marko Geslani, PhD Assistant Professor of Religion Marko Geslani completed his PhD in Religious Studies at Yale University (2011). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held postdoctoral fellowships at Occidental College and the University of British Columbia. His primary research focus is premodern Hinduism. His articles have been published in Indo-Iranian Journal and Journal Asiatique. 6

7 Dilek Huseyinzadegan, PhD Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dilek Huseyinzadegan completed her PhD in Philosophy at DePaul University (2012). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a position at Koç University. Her primary research focus is the philosophy of Kant and German Idealism, social and political philosophy, and feminist theory. She has published in Proceedings of the Eleventh International Kant Congress. Danielle F. Jung, PhD Assistant Professor of Political Science Danielle Jung completed her PhD in Political Science at the University of California, San Diego (2012). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University. Her primary research focus is on terrorist and insurgent organizations as well as elections in emerging democracies. Her articles have been published in journals including The American Journal of Political Science and Terrorism and Political Violence. Minsu Kim, PhD Assistant Professor of Physics Minsu Kim completed his PhD in Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign (2008). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. His primary research focus is quantitative systems biology and single cell microbiology. His articles have been published in journals including Journal of Chemical Physics and Physical Review Letters. Sabino Kornrich, PhD Assistant Professor of Sociology Sabino Kornrich completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of Washington (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, he held positions at the Juan March Institute and the University of Sydney. His primary research focus is inequality, gender, and family. His articles have been published in journals including American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and Demography. Gregory Martin, PhD Assistant Professor of Political Science Gregory Martin completed his PhD in Political Economics at Stanford University (2013) before joining the faculty at Emory. His primary research focus is American politics and empirical methodology. His articles have been published in journals including Political Analysis. 7

8 Dawn Peterson, PhD Assistant Professor of History Dawn Peterson completed her PhD in American Studies at New York University (2011). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society. Peterson s primary research focus is the role of race, gender, and kinship in the history of U.S. capitalism, settler colonialism, and slavery. Her articles have been published in journals including Politics and Culture. Shawn Ramirez, PhD Assistant Professor of Political Science Shawn Ramirez completed her PhD in Political Science at the University of Rochester (2013). She joined the faculty at Emory in Her primary research focus is the cause and resolution of interstate and intrastate conflict and formal theory. Her articles have been published in journals including Studies in Conflict and Terrorism. Eri Saikawa, PhD Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Eri Saikawa completed her PhD in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at Princeton University (2010). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a position at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her primary research focus is environmental policy and science, focusing on air pollution and climate change. Her articles have been published in journals including Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics and World Politics. Subha Xavier, PhD Assistant Professor of French Subha Xavier completed her PhD in French Literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (2007). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a position at the University of Miami. Her primary research focus is Francophone literature. Her articles have been published in journals including The French Review and Contemporary French and Francophone Studies. Goizueta Business School 8 Tongil ( TI ) Kim, PhD Assistant Professor of Marketing Tongil ( TI ) Kim completed his PhD in Marketing at the University of California, Berkeley (2013). His research interests include empirical industrial organization, marketing and public policy, and behavioral economics and his main area of research is empirical marketing strategy. His program of research applies advanced empirical industrial organization techniques to difficult to solve problems in the franchising industry. His recent work results include a novel solution to the problem of monitoring performance in the franchising industry.

9 Oliver Randall, PhD Assistant Professor of Finance Oliver Randall completed his PhD in Finance at New York University (2013). His primary research interests are in the areas of asset pricing and market microstructure. He investigates both theoretically and empirically the relation between bond dealers inventory positions, financing costs and bond market liquidity. His recent work provides important insights into the actions of bond dealers in general and in particular during the recent financial crisis and their effects on investors in the market. Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Melissa Spezia Faulkner, DSN, RN, FAAN Acting Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean for Educational Innovation Melissa Faulkner completed her DSN in Nursing Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1991). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she held positions at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Tennessee, and Southeast Missouri State University. Her primary research focus is the psychosocial and physiological alterations associated with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes in adolescents, with the goal of improving outcomes and quality of life for youth with diabetes and their families. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals, including: Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Journal of Pediatric Health Care, and Research in Nursing and Health. Kristy Kiel Martyn, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, FNP-BC Acting Professor of Nursing and Assistant Dean for Clinical Advancement Kristy Martyn completed her PhD in Nursing Science at the University of Florida (1998). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she held positions at the University of Michigan, Duquesne University, Georgia State University, Albany State University, University of Miami, and University of Florida. Her primary research focus is access to person-centered health care for child, adolescent, and young adult patient populations. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals, including: Journal of Family Nursing, Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing, and, Pediatrics. Melissa D. Pinto, PhD, RN Assistant Professor of Nursing Melissa Pinto completed her PhD in Nursing at the University of Louisville (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she held a position at Case Western Reserve University. Her primary research focus is on mental health of young adults. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals, including: Applied Nursing Research, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, and Social Science and Medicine. 9

10 Oxford College Boris Nikolaev, PhD Assistant Professor of Economics Boris Nikolaev completed his PhD in Economics at the University of South Florida (2013). Prior to joining the faculty at Oxford College, he held positions at The University of South Florida. His primary research focus is on income inequality and economic growth in relation to happiness. He has published an article in The Journal of Private Enterprise. Erin C. Tarver, PhD Assistant Professor of Philosophy Erin C. Tarver completed her PhD in Philosophy at Vanderbilt University (2011). Prior to joining the faculty at Oxford College, she held positions at James Madison University, Georgetown College, and Niagara University. Her primary research focus is pragmatism and feminism. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy, philosophia: A Journal of Continental Feminism, and The Journal of Speculative Philosophy. Deric Shannon, PhD Assistant Professor of Sociology Deric Shannon completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of Connecticut (2011). Prior to joining the faculty at Oxford College, he held positions at San Jose State University and the University of Connecticut. His primary research focus is anarchism. He has written chapters for and coedited a number of books, and his articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Peace Studies Journal, Theory in Action, and Sexualities. Jonathan Hulgan, PhD Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jonathan Hulgan completed his PhD in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis (2010). Prior to joining the faculty at Oxford College, he held positions at San Marcos Academy, Texas State University-San Marcos, and the University of Memphis. His primary research focus is vertex coloring of graphs. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Discrete Mathematics and Acta Arithmetica. Rollins School of Public Health 10 Robert F. Breiman, MD Acting Professor of Global Health Director, Global Health Initiative Robert F. Breiman completed his MD at the University of Arizona (1979). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he was the Country Director for

11 CDC-Kenya in Nairobi and had served as Director of the Health Systems and Infectious Diseases Division and Head of the Programme on Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Sciences at the ICDDR,B in Bangladesh and Director of the National Vaccine Program Office for the US Department of Health and Human Services. His primary research focus is infectious diseases and vaccines. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including The Lancet, Nature, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Thomas Clasen, JD, PhD Rose Salamone Gangarosa Chair in Sanitation and Safe Water Professor of Environmental Health Thomas Clasen completed his PhD in Infectious Diseases at the University of London (2006). He previously completed a JD at Georgetown University (1981) followed by a career in international law. Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he was a faculty member at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His primary research focus is water, sanitation and health. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Environmental Science and Technology and British Medical Journal. Veronika Fedirko, PhD, MPH Assistant Professor of Epidemiology Veronika Fedirko completed her PhD in Cancer and Molecular Epidemiology at Emory University (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France. Her primary research focus is on the relationship of nutrition and metabolism to cancer etiology. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals including American Journal of Epidemiology, Cancer Epidemiology, and Biomarkers and Prevention. Neel Rajnikant Gandhi, MD Associate Professor of Epidemiology Neel Rajnikant Gandhi completed his MD at the Brown-Dartmouth Program in Medical Education (Dartmouth Medical School and Brown Medical School) (1999). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he completed the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University and held a faculty position as assistant and associate professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. His primary research focus is on preventing the transmission of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Medical Care, Journal of Infectious Diseases and Emerging Infectious Diseases. 11

12 Terryl Hartman, PhD Professor of Epidemiology Terryl Hartman completed her PhD in Nutrition at the University of Minnesota (1995). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she was Professor of Nutrition at the Pennsylvania State University. Her primary research focus is the role of diet and nutrition in the etiology of chronic diseases, particularly cancer. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals including American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Epidemiology and Cancer Epidemiology. Timothy Lash, DSc, MPH Acting Professor of Epidemiology Timothy Lash completed his DSc in Epidemiology at Boston University (1999). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he was Professor of Epidemiology and Prevention at Wake Forest School of Medicine. His primary research focus is cancer etiology and control. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including American Journal of Epidemiology, Cancer, and Lancet Oncology. Eli Rosenberg, PhD Assistant Professor of Epidemiology Eli Rosenberg completed his PhD in Epidemiology at Emory University (2012). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he was Associate Director of Research Projects in the Rollins School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. His primary research focus is AIDS and HIV transmission. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, American Journal of Epidemiology, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Mary Beth Weber, PhD Assistant Professor of Global Health Mary Beth Weber completed her PhD in Nutrition and Health Sciences at Emory University (2012). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Emory. Her primary research interest is global diabetes. Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Lancet, Birth Defects Research and the New England Journal of Medicine School of Law 12 Urska Velikonja, JD Assistant Professor of Law Urska Velikonja completed her JD at Harvard Law School (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she was on the faculty at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Her primary research focus is on corporate law and corporate malfeasance. Her articles have been

13 published in a number of leading law journals, including the North Carolina Law Review, William and Mary Law Review, and UC Davis Law Review. School of Medicine Cheryl Day, PhD Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology Cheryl Day received her PhD from Harvard University (2003). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford and was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and the University of Cape Town. Her research goals are to investigate mechanisms regulating T cell immunity in TB and TB/HIV co-infection, as well as defining the phenotypic and functional characteristics of T cells and natural killer cells that are associated with successful immune control of M. tuberculosis infection. Sandra M. Garraway, PhD Assistant Professor of Physiology Sandra M. Garraway received her PhD in Physiology at the University of Manitoba (2000). She completed her postdoctoral work in Neuroscience at SUNY, Stonybrook, and Cornell Medical College. She subsequently became a Research Scientist at Texas A&M University and is currently an Assistant Research Professor of Psychology at the same institution. Dr. Garraway s primary research investigates how the spinal cord adapts especially following peripheral or CNS damage. Her articles have been published in leading journals including: The Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Physiology, and Journal of Neurophysiology. Joanna B. Goldberg, PhD Professor of Pediatrics Joanna B. Goldberg earned her PhD in Microbiology from the University of California, Berkeley (1986). Prior to her joining the faculty at Emory, she held positions at Harvard Medical School and the University of Virginia. Her research programs relate to bacterial pathogenesis and devising mechanisms to inhibit infections in humans. In particular, she focuses on the life-shortening lung infections in individuals with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). She will serve as Associate Director for Outreach and Education at the Emory Children s CF Center of Excellence. Clinton H. Joiner, MD, PhD Professor of Pediatrics Clinton H. Joiner completed his MD and PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology at Duke University (1977). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2012, he held positions at Harvard Medical School, University of Alabama School of Medicine, and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His primary research focus is sickle cell disease. His articles 13

14 have been published in a number of leading journals including Cell, Blood, American Journal of Hematology, and Journal of Biological Chemistry. Anna Marie Kenney, PhD Associate Professor of Pediatrics Anna Marie Kenney received her PhD in Neuroscience from Yale University (1998). She completed her postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School, Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, she held positions at Harvard Medical School, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Vanderbilt University. Her research addresses how signal transduction pathways interact to regulate gene expression and post-translational protein modifications that impact the neural precursor proliferation, differentiation, and transformation into brain tumor cells. Baek Kim, PhD Acting Professor of Pediatrics Baek Kim received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Arizona (1993). He completed his postdoctoral training at University of Washington in Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he held a position at the University of Rochester. He has been conducting both biochemical and virological research focusing on the replication and evolution of HIV-1, establishment of long-living HIV-1 macrophage reservoirs, and role of SAMHD1 on HIV replication. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Cell and Nature Medicine. Chia-Yi Kuan, MD, PhD Associate Professor of Pediatrics Chia-Yi Kuan received his MD from National Taiwan University College of Medicine (1989) and his PhD from Yale University (2000). He received his postdoctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he held positions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His research focus is on understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of perinatal brain injury, including hypoxia-ischemia, infectionsensitized, and prematurity-related cerebral hemorrhage, and designing new therapies. He has published in top tier journals such as, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature, and Cell. 14 Alanna A. Morris, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine Alanna A. Morris received her MD from Harvard Medical School (2005). Her post graduate training includes an internship and residency in Internal Medicine from Brigham and Women s Hospital. She was Chief Medical Resident at Faulkner Hospital. She completed a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation at Emory University School of Medicine. She will be based primarily at The Emory Clinic.

15 Amir Rezvan, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine Amir Rezvan received his MD from the College of Medicine, Iran University of Medical Sciences (1999). His postgraduate training included an Internal Medicine Residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, Drexel University College of Medicine and a fellowship in Cardiology at Emory. Martin George Sanda, MD Acting Professor of Urology Martin George Sanda received his MD from Columbia University (1987). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory, he held positions at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is chair of the Department of Urology and service chief for Emory Healthcare. He is principal investigator of three multi-center consortium studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. He has published in leading medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine. Lawrence Scahill, PhD Acting Professor of Pediatrics Lawrence Scahill completed his PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University (1997). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory he held positions at Yale University. His primary research is autism and Tourette syndrome. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Archives of General Psychiatry, and Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Mehul S. Suthar, PhD Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Mehul S. Suthar received her PhD from University of North Carolina (2007). She completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Immunology at the University of Washington. Her laboratory focuses on studying the role of RIG-I like receptors in governing immunity to virus infection and vaccination. Her research goals include (1) Defining how the innate immune RIG-I like receptors promote T cell survival, effector functions, and memory development during virus infection and vaccination; and (2) Examining virus-host interactions that control virus replication and infection. 15

16 Non-Tenure Track Faculty Candler School of Theology Thomas W. Elliott, Jr., DMin Assistant Professor in the Practice of Practical Theology; Director, Contextual Education II; Director, Teaching Parish Program Thomas W. Elliott, Jr. completed his DMin, specializing in prayer in the local congregation, at Emory University (1997). Prior to joining the Candler faculty, Elliott, an elder in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church with 26 years of ministry experience, served as the senior pastor of Cannon Church in Snellville, Georgia. His work focuses on Wesleyan studies, polity, evangelism and mission, and contextual education. Emory College of Arts and Sciences Jessica Barber, PhD Lecturer in Psychology Jessica Barber completed her PhD in Social Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University (2012). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a position at The University of Scranton. Her primary research focus is attitude change and persuasion, with a particular emphasis on political attitudes. She has published in The Journal of Instructional Psychology. Erin Bonning, PhD Lecturer in Physics Erin Bonning completed her PhD in Physics at the University of Texas, Austin (2004). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. Her primary research focus is multiwavelength observations and theoretical modeling of active galactic nuclei and relativistic jets. Her articles have been published in journals including Astrophysical Journal and Physics Review. Megan Cole, PhD Lecturer in Biology Megan Cole completed her PhD in Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2008). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her primary research focus is analyzing sequence data across species to identify signatures of functional divergence. Her articles have been published in journals including Nature and Cell. 16

17 Bree Ettinger, PhD Lecturer in Mathematics Bree Ettinger completed her PhD in Mathematics at the University of Georgia (2009). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory in 2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Politecnico di Milano and a position at Morehouse College. His postgraduate medical training included a Family Practice residency at the University of Texas. He was previously an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, and supervised postdoctoral fellows at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Anamika Patel, PhD Assistant Professor of Biochemistry Anamika Patel received her PhD from Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, India (2004). During her research, she developed an in vitro system to study the activity of large protein complexes like MLL1. She has been recruited as an Assistant Professor from SUNY Upstate Medical University, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her unique training will enable her to enhance the Department of Biochemistry research by focusing on epigenetics, enzymology and understanding reaction mechanisms of complex enzymes. Kavita N. Patel, MD Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Kavita N. Patel earned her MD from Texas Tech University (2003). Her postgraduate medical training included a Pediatrics residency at Mattel Children s Hospital (UCLA) and fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Texas Children s Hospital (Baylor College of Medicine). After completing the fellowship, she remained at Baylor College of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor and then as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. At Emory, she will be the Clinical Lead of the pediatric thrombosis clinical service and research program for the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service. She provides community psychiatric clinical care in outpatient services at Grady Memorial Hospital. Timotheus G. Watson, MD Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Timotheus G. Watson received his MD from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine (2006). His postgraduate medical training included a Pediatrics residency at The Cleveland Clinic and a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has received advanced training in transthoracic echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and cardiac computed tomographic angiography. He will provide outpatient pediatric consultative and follow-up care for patients with suspected or proven cardiac issues. Jean Welsh, PhD, MPH, RN Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Jean Welsh received her PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology from Emory University (2010). Her research interests are focused on developing a better understanding of the impact of dietary patterns, particularly beverage consumption patterns, established in childhood on obesity and chronic disease risk and on identifying community and health care provider-based strategies that are effective in reducing this risk. Arthur Wendel, MD Assistant Professor (p/t) of Family and Preventive Medicine Arthur Wendel received his MD from Tufts University (2002). His postgraduate medical training included a Family Practice residency at the University of Washington, and a Preventive Medicine residency at the CDC. Prior to joining Emory, he held positions at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and was affiliated with the Harvard Occupational and Environmental Residency Program at Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently a Medical Officer, Team Leader with CDC. Seventy-five percent of his time will be in clinical activities in our family practice clinic and twenty-five percent will be in teaching and precepting residents in the Family Practice Residency Program. 54 Joshua H. Winer, MD Assistant Professor of Surgery Joshua H. Winer earned his MD from the University of Maryland (2004). Winterberg, MD Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Pamela D. Winterberg earned her MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (2006). Her postgraduate training included a residency in Pediatrics at the Oregon Health and Sciences University and a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at University of Texas Southwestern, where she conducted basic science research into the molecular mechanisms of acute kidney injury. At Emory, she will be working to investigating the role of viral infections and the innate immune response during kidney transplantation. David S. Wolf, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Pediatrics David S. Wolf received his PhD in Neuroscience from Emory University (2001) and his MD from New York University (2005). His postgraduate medical training included a Pediatrics residency at Emory University School of Medicine/Children s Healthcare of Atlanta, a Child Neurology residency and a fellowship in Neuro-oncology both at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Kalinda Dennis Woods, MD Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics Kalinda Dennis Woods received her MD from Meharry Medical College (2004). Her postgraduate medical training included a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Maryland. 56 ShiQin Xiong, PhD Instructor of Medicine ShiQin Xiong received his PhD from The Third Military University in Chongqing, China (2000). He joined Dr. Alexander s lab in 2007 as a postdoctoral fellow to explore molecular mechanisms for the renin-angiotensin system-mediated physiological and pathological responses in the cardiovascular system. He was hired as a Senior Associate research track in 2012 and is now being promoted to an Instructor research track. Dr. Xiong would be conducting research on angiotensin II receptor signaling. Samantha M. Yeligar, PhD Associate in Medicine Samantha M. Yeligar received her PhD in Biochemical and Molecular Biology (2009). Her postgraduate training included three years in Dr. Mike Hart s laboratory in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. Her primary responsibilities will be basic research investigating molecular mechanisms underlying alveolar macrophage dysfunction during chronic alcohol ingestion.. Benjamin A. Youngblood, PhD Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology Benjamin A. Youngblood received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2007). Since arriving to Emory, he has worked in the laboratory of Dr. Rafi Ahmed where he completed his training and conducted research funded by the National Institutes of Health specifically focused on immunological mechanisms involved in gene regulation. His work has included severs notable first author papers and findings that have resulted in important advances in the field of immunology. Linsheng Zhang, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Linsheng Zhang received his MD from the Third Military Medical University in Chongqing, China (1986) and his PhD in Medical Science (Hematology) at Beijing Medical University, China. His postgraduate training included a Fellowship in Hematopathology in 2012 and a Fellowship in Molecular Genetic Pathology in June 2013 at Emory. Dr. Zhang will provide clinical services in hematopathology and molecular diagnostics. His primary practice site will be Emory University Hospital. 56
