3 Introduction One of the core values of Phi Delta Chi is lifelong learning; here at the Lambda Chapter, we strive to uphold this pillar both within and outside the classroom. At the University of Texas at Austin, our motto is "What starts here changes the world," but that can't be done without a strong basis of knowledge through lifelong learning. Lambda Brothers aim to uphold this motto through individual recognition, academic engagements, and merit-based scholarships. The Lambda Chapter Scholarship Committee helps promote scholastic excellence through various means to provide Brothers the opportunity to make a change in the world of pharmacy. 4 Promoting Scholastinc Improvement & Achievement Academic positions Brothers at the the Lambda Chapter have the opportunity to take part in many teaching positions available at the UT-COP. These positions include teaching assistants (TA), Academic Assistants (AA), and Advanced Academic Assistants (AAA). By taking advantage of these unique professional development opportunities, Brothers have a chance to give back to the College of Pharmacy as well as reinforce their own knowledge of the material. Participating in these positions benefit Brothers in preparation for their P4 rotations and The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NAPLEX) exam. Brothers in AA positions support a course through group tutoring, hold weekly review sessions prior to exams, and provide general course support. The AAA Brothers assist in leading laboratorybased courses under the supervision of a faculty member in such ways as reviewing weekly materials in preparation for discussion, set-up lab materials for discussion sessions, and work with TAs to facilitate topic discussion. Brothers who did particularly well in these courses can apply for these positions. (15 Brothers participated. 119 Brothers reached.) PDC Mentor mentee program Lambda has been improving its Mentor-Mentee Program every year by learning from its past experiences. This year, the Worthy Alumni Liaison (WAL) reached out to Alumni and sought their interest in becoming a mentor to Brothers at Lambda through making an online questionnaire. Similarly, the WAL also reached out to Brothers and asked about their interest in having a mentor throughout pharmacy school. After collecting the data, the WAL and Alumni Committee Senior Chair matched the mentor Alumni to mentee Brothers based on their future career directions, workplace, and rotation sites. Brothers were very pleased with the match process and are now benefiting from the valuable advice of their mentor Alumni. (16 Alumni and 3 Brothers participated. 00 Alumni and 119 Brothers reached.) brother summer q&a This year, Brothers at the Lambda Chapter started a new initiative, hosting an internship panel and Q&A for the P1 Candidates to learn about Summer Internship opportunities. P and P3 Brothers shared their insight on the various experiences they had participated in over the summer after P1 year, as well as answered any questions the P1 Candidates had about the positions or interview process. This event has helped well prepare our Candidates for the P1 Summer Internship Interviews taking place in the Spring semester! (34 Candidates reached.)

5 cv/resume workshop This year, Lambda s Professional Development Chair planned and held a CV workshop with the help of a clinical assistant professor, Dr. Lucas Hill and a Lambda Alumni, Dr. Molly Curran for all students at UT-COP. This workshop was created in response to feedback from Brothers who had questions about the layout and content of a standard CV. Dr. Hill gave wonderful advice on proper formatting, organization and pointers on what he believes employers, residency and fellowship programs look for. Brothers and Candidates who attended gained valuable information to create a competitive and professional CV! (154 Brothers & Candidates reached. 6 participated) College-wide Programs and Events P Osce Review The Scholarship Committee set up a college-wide review to help P Brothers and their classmates prepare for their Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with the help of upper classmen Brothers. This event allowed an opportunity for Brothers who had already taken the course to help those who are currently enrolled. P1 Candidates were also encouraged to come out and volunteer as patients. The Scholarship Committee with the help of P3 Brothers developed and distributed a useful handout that contained a review of clinical examination techniques with common mistakes made by students. P Brothers found these handouts to be invaluable for their OSCE preparation. The Scholarship Committee with the help from the course professor provided various equipment for students to use such as monofilaments, tuning forks, blood pressure cuffs, and penlights. (119 Brothers reached. 33 Brothers participated.) college-wide Mentor-Mentee program To assist with the transition into pharmacy school for the incoming P1 class, many Brothers participated in the UT-COP Mentor-Mentee program, hosted by Brothers Danielle Alvarez and Any Jivan along with The New Student Orientation Committee. This program connects Brothers with incoming potential Candidiates and fosters a relationship of academic and professional guidance. (119 Brothers reached. 39 Brothers participated.) PDC & SCCP Journal Club This journal club was a new initiative Lambda in collaboration with the Student College of Clinical Pharmacy (SCCP) organization hosted this year. The goal of this event was to prepare students to develop skills of analyzing journal articles and clinical studies. A P Brother, David Giang, presented at this journal club, which helped him gain an invaluable 3

6 experience: "Presenting at my first journal club was nerve-wrecking at first, but then turned out to be a great learning experience. I decided to present an article on Alzheimer s Disease, because I knew getting an early experience as a presenter would later on benefit me as a P4 and during a residency. During the process, I learned a lot about how to critically review a study and prepare myself for the faculties and students questions. Presenting alone at a journal club was a fun experience for me, especially since I had my Brothers supporting me! Recognizing Scholastic Improvement & Excellence monthly & banquet smart cookie One way Lambda encourages success in academia is through Smart Cookie. Brothers can submit the A s they receive on tests and assignments to be entered into a drawing. Each submission counts as a raffle ticket in this drawing. At each general meeting, a name is selected from the submissions, and that Brother receives a halfdozen Tiff s Treats cookies, which are an amazing local favorite here in Austin. The Banquet Smart Cookie is an extension of the monthly Smart Cookie. It follows the same principles and foundation with the cumulative drawing from all the submissions from the entire school year. This way, Brothers who participated have another shot at winning! Prizes given out in the past include a trophy, lapel pins, gift cards, fundraising items, and even more Tiff s Treats cookies! general meeting scholarship question Before each Phi Delta Chi General Meeting, the Scholarship Committee constructs two scholarship questions per pharmacy year. These scholarship questions serve as pop quizzes as they are the types of questions one may encounter on an exam. The committee develops one question from previous exam material and one from the upcoming exam material; during the general meetings, students from each class have an opportunity to answer a question, and they earn House points if they answer correctly. This is a great way to provide a quick refresher and test their readiness for material they are still learning about. It also promotes scholastic achievement within the Chapter, and creates a fun, competitive environment among Lambda's Houses. In addition, the Committee will compile all of the questions developed throughout the semester into a question bank for students to use as a study tool for final examinations. 4

7 Alumni newsletter Recognition The Alumni Committee of Lambda creates a newsletter every month and sends it to over 00 of our Alumni Brothers. These newsletters showcase monthly updates, events, and news that Brothers were involved in such as studying for midterms, homecoming game, celebrating halloween, attending Founders Day, and many more. The Alumni Committee also includes a slideshow of the new Candidates class so alumni can get to know them a little bit. In addition, the newsletter consists of the upcoming events of the Chapter which lets Alumni know about our Chapter plans and invites them to join us at our events. Finally, in addition to including an Alumni spotlight, the newsletter also encourages Alumni to become more involved by speaking in our general meetings, becoming a mentor, and enjoying free dinner with Brothers. Lambda promotes the Alumni newsletter as an incentive for Brothers to continue to dedicate their efforts to earning scholastic success through their new Alumni role. Lindsey Groff: Brother Lindsey won the P competition at the TSHP Clinical Skills Competition in April 017. Post-Graduate Spotlight Brother Scott Jermain is a recent Pharm. D. graduate who is pursuing his Ph.D. in pharmaceutics: "Research has changed my career path completely following the conclusion of pharmacy school. I was granted admission into UT Pharm.D./Ph.D program during my P year and I continued on to graduate school following my Pharm.D. graduation in May of 017. The program has prepared me to be a full time graduate student and conduct my own research while still holding onto my clinical knowledge as a pharmacist. I currently practice with my Pharm.D. by working part-time as a pharmacist for CVS, but ultimately following the completion of my Ph.D., I see myself working in the pharmaceutical industry or entering into the realm of academia." Future directions Lambda strives to ensure the scholastic success of all of its Brothers from helping them prepare for their exams and build competetive CVs to connecting them to valuable mentors. In the upcoming year, Lambda will continue to build upon its successful initiatives and create more opportunities for Brothers such as including NAPLEX questions in the weekly s, recognizing hard working Brothers, and appreciating Alumni over breakfast. Lambda Brothers never cease from putting their best effort in bettering the pharmacy profession. 6
