Be sure to print and fill out the Pre-registration Form on the last page of this brochure. Or REGISTER IN PERSON starting April 25. Non-Burnaby School District students must provide the following when registering or pre-registering: Proof of student s birthdate (birth certificate or passport) Proof of guardianship (parents or guardians as shown on birth certificate or other appropriate legal documentation such as landed immigrant paper or guardianship order granted by the courts) Proof of citizenship for both the parent and the student (Canadian birth certificate, citizenship card, passport, landed immigrant document, permanent resident card) Proof of residency of the parent or guardian and student - 2 required, with at least 1 from Category A Category A: proof of ownership of dwelling or long-term lease or rental of dwelling; legal documents indicating BC residence; parent or guardian filing income tax returns as a BC resident Category B: BC hydro bill, BC cable bill, Provincial driver s licence, provincial registration of automobile, Canadian bank accounts or credit cards Copy of student s most recent school marks (report card or transcript of academic record) BC Personal Education Number (PEN) Are you eligible A limited number of academic courses are funded by the BC Ministry of Education making them tuition-free for eligible students who meet the following criteria. Your child must: be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or convention refugee attend a BC school in the school year and ordinarily resides in BC with parent/guardian have a BC Personal Education Number (PEN) Students must meet the criteria above* and provide their Personal Education Number (PEN) when registering. ONE tuition-free academic course per eligible student. Full attendance is required. Those not eligible or those signing up for courses requiring fees must pay by cash, money order, or Visa or Mastercard. Learning Support If your child has an IEP and/or a Fraser Health Care Plan or Consultation Report, and is currently receiving additional learning support from an Education Assistant at school, you must register by May 20, and indicate this at the time of registration. First priority of students requiring additional learning support will be given to Burnaby School District regular session students. Students who register after May 20 will be placed on a waitlist, and are not guaranteed a summer session placement. Students on the waitlist will be contacted if a space becomes available and will only be registered when the space is confirmed. Non-Burnaby School District students must register in person and bring the child s IEP and all documentation required for registration. Transfers A $35 fee will be charged for all requested transfers unless recommended by the Burnaby School District. Refunds for courses requiring a fee A $35 registration fee will be retained for all requested refunds for courses requiring fees. Requests for refunds must be made in writing and include original receipt. July 13 is the final day for transfers and refunds. Course Locations & Cancellations Courses and their locations cannot be guaranteed. Course offerings are subject to sufficient enrolment and may be moved or cancelled prior to the course start date. You will learn to do art in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch and others. Athletes & Literacy (Intermediate) Read, Write, Perform! A fun way to combine reading and writing with basketball and athletics. Learn and improve your basketball skills and learn more about sports and athletes through reading and writing response journals. Each day s session will be a combination of basketball skills, daily physical training and in class time to read, write and learn! Brain Gymnastics (Intermediate) Give your brain a fun workout every day! Learn strategies to see fascinating puzzles from different perspectives and find creative solutions to interesting challenges. This course will help students improve their skills in creative problem-solving and critical thinking such as observing, comparing, analyzing, evaluating and drawing conclusions. Drama - Developing Skills Through Play (Going into grades 3-5) This class will provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice several drama skills. Activities will include: drama games, Story Theatre improvisation, character building, script work and physical and vocal warm-ups. English Language Learners These classes are designed to provide opportunities for elementary students to improve their English language skills in an interactive and social environment. The focus is on listening, speaking, reading and writing along with increased vocabulary development. Grade 7 students may register for either the Elementary ELL Program or Secondary ELL Program. Essay and Report Writing (Intermediate) Learn an easy to follow formula to help communicate ideas and focus thoughts while adding style and meaning to your writing. Students will practice fundamental skills of paragraph organization, topic development, effective conclusions, and revision/editing skills. French Introduction and Enrichment (Intermediate) Looking to maintain or improve your child s French during the summer? Thinking about Late French Immersion? This activity- centred and communicative-based course will keep students moving and having fun in French. Open to beginners and novice students. Fun in the Sun With Reading (Primary) Develop an appreciation for the enjoyment of literature, increase confidence with the printed word and get a jumpstart for September. The development of literacy, critical thinking and higher level thinking skills will be stressed while participating in a variety of literary experiences. Get Outdoors: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds (Primary) This class cultivates creativity, imagination and a sense of wonder. Students will develop healthy bodies and minds; including important observational, sensory and experimental skills, while building connections to the community. 8 Grade 7/8 Transition This course is for students that have successfully completed grade 7 and would like exposure to life at the secondary level. An introduction to Mathematics 8, English 8 and expectations and behaviours required for success in grade 8. Imagination Quest (Intermediate) Your imagination can take you anywhere! An ipad can help you in that journey too. In this creative, imaginative course students will learn critical thinking, spontaneous problem solving skills, and the power of group work while building spaceships! Children will document their exploration via ipads and explore their ability to problem solve in critical and creative ways. Manga Mania and the Graphic Novel (Intermediate) Bring Manga characters to life by exploring drawing, rendering and painting techniques. Develop your own story full of adventure and delight. Your imagination and love of drawing are all you need. Math Workshop (Intermediate) Students will be involved in activities that review and further develop their numeracy skills in the Number, Patterns and Relationships, and Shape and Space strands of the curriculum. Students will be exploring concepts concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. Modern Music (Intermediate) Students will expand existing skills and develop new ones in a fun, interactive environment featuring their favorite contemporary songs and rock classics. We ll work on songwriting, composition, instrumental skill/vocal skills and on stage performance techniques and incorporate technology (ipads) into music creation. Students will gain greater mastery of improvisation, both as soloists and in groups/combos. Odyssey of the Mind (Intermediate) Do you like working with hammers and saws? Do you enjoy crafting? Are you interested in how to make a vehicle move by itself? Design it! Build it! Make it go! We ll think, act and make our way through creative problems that include construction, vehicles, drama and art. Learn new ways of thinking about everyday problems. Join us on an Odyssey of the Mind!

Skill Development (Primary and Intermediate) These courses provide your elementary-aged child with the opportunity to practice and review Language Arts and Mathematics foundation skills in individual and group settings. Summer Fun with Music (Primary) Come and spend your mornings playing with music! This class uses traditional hand-clapping, ball-bouncing and skipping games to learn music. We will play musical games outside and then come inside to play the rhythms and melodies of the chants and songs on a variety of instruments. The class will include some free exploration of instruments. Smart Start Art (Intermediate) This art course focuses on developing interactions between each student s creative expressions and their personal appreciation of art. Students will design a portfolio: a collection of their summer artwork and artistic ideas. Projects include: drawing, painting, printmaking and image development. Surprising Science (Primary and Intermediate) Students in both the primary and intermediate programs will have fun while learning scientific principles and methods through active hands-on experimentation. Wonder Workshop (Intermediate) Ever wonder why the sky is blue or why grass is green? What makes popcorn pop, or things glow in the dark? What do you wonder and what do you want to find out? Students will explore personal interest through a series of research based projects. Along the way, they will develop research and note taking strategies and further their writing abilities as they communicate their findings in a variety of ways. Writer s Workshop (Primary and Intermediate) Do you have a burning desire to be an author? Primary students will work together to build ideas, frame their thinking and use writing to communicate their thinking in a powerful way. Time will be spent learning how to create advanced 2D vector artwork and animated character sprites to make your game look great. The final project is a game you can take home on USB or proudly share with friends online. Use the GPS, accelerometer or anything else you can think of to build your app from scratch. This is a coding camp, so be prepared to challenge yourself and learn some new skills. Each day, a new project is introduced and students are taken through the steps of understanding and working with the new code ideas. Students will get to work on their own project ideas on the final two days. The may use their own mobile devices to develop and test on, or use ours. July am - 3pm 8503 Burnaby North Secondary $250 3D ANIMATION (Ages 11-14) Dreaming of a career with PIXAR? Ever wonder how those awesome 3D animated movies like Shrek, Toy Story and Frozen are made? Spend the week learning how by modeling, animating and telling your own stories in 3D. You ll use Blender, a wonderful (& free!) 3D software to design characters that jump off the screen and then make them come alive by adding voices, soundtracks and completing your own animated short film. Final projects are usually group projects with each student contributing a character and a scene. July am - 3pm 8507 Burnaby North Secondary $250 2D ANIMATION ON TABLET (Ages 9-12) Turn your drawing skill into awesome animation skills on our tablets! We ll show you how to make beautiful animations as wild as your imagination. Participants will learn to storyboard and use some advanced animation skills to make their characters really come alive on the screen. Principles like Squash & Stretch, Anticipation and Exaggeration will be introduced in fun lessons and students will produce their own animated short films by the end of the week.
